Koh Samui is a softer, slower island than the big west coast names, and its beaches reflect that. The east coast around Chaweng and Lamai holds the long swimmable sand, the choice of clubs and most of the energy. The north around Bophut and Maenam is calmer and more local in feel, while the quiet west looks across to the mainland for the island's best sunsets. The south and the headland coves fill in the gaps with small, sheltered bays.
The honest read is that Samui is an easy island to get right. The water on the main east coast beaches is warm, shallow and gentle for long stretches of the year, and the distances are short. The catch is the weather calendar, which runs differently from Phuket and Bali and saves its wettest weeks for the end of the year. Below we rank the beaches on sand, water, crowd and what kind of day each one suits.
Ranked, not listed
Scored on water, sand, crowd and how easy it is to get onto the sand. Honest verdicts, the overrated called out.
Chaweng
The island's main event. A long ribbon of white sand and clear shallow water, backed by the widest choice of hotels, clubs and food on Samui. Busy, yes, but the swimming and the scale earn it the top spot.
Choeng Mon
A pretty, sheltered cove on the northeast headland with calm shallow water and a relaxed, family feel. The easy pick when Chaweng feels like too much.
Lamai
Chaweng's more laid back neighbour, with a long sweep of sand and clear water but a calmer, lower rise feel. A strong choice if you want the east coast swimming without the full bustle.
Bophut
A calm north coast beach attached to the charming Fisherman's Village, with its restaurants and weekly walking street. The sand is quieter and the swimming gentle, with the village the real draw.
Maenam
A long, quiet, palm backed beach that has kept its local feel and its budget friendly prices. Calm water and space to walk make it a favourite for slow days and good value stays.
Silver Beach
A small clear water cove between Chaweng and Lamai, framed by boulders and backed by a couple of resorts. One of the prettiest, clearest swims on the island when it is calm.
Lipa Noi
A wide, flat, calm beach on the west coast known for its sunsets and its very gentle, shallow water. Quiet by day and a front row seat for the evening light.
Coral Cove
A tiny rocky cove between Chaweng and Lamai with some of the best snorkelling on the developed coast. Small and not for long sandy walks, but lovely for clear water and fish.
Who it suits, who should skip
Who should skip what? If you want the widest choice of food, bars and a long swimmable beach in one place, Chaweng is your base and the quiet north will feel too sleepy. If you came to slow right down, Maenam, Bophut and the calm west coast are the island at its most relaxed, and Chaweng's centre will feel busier than you want. The honest misstep is judging Samui by Chaweng's main drag alone, because the island rewards anyone who explores its calmer corners.
Getting around is easy on a compact island, with the main beaches a short ring road drive apart, so you can swim on the east coast and chase sunset on the west in a single day. The point to plan around is the weather calendar, which runs later than the rest of Thailand and is at its wettest and choppiest from October to December. In those weeks the east coast can turn murky, so keep your plans flexible and follow the calmer side of the island.
The best months in Koh Samui
Koh Samui sits in the Gulf of Thailand, so its calendar is its own. The driest, sunniest stretch runs roughly from January to April, with a second pleasant window in the middle of the year. The wettest weeks come late, from around October to December, when the northeast monsoon can bring heavier rain and choppier east coast water. Sea temperatures stay warm all year, so the planning is about rain and sea state rather than cold.
Where to book a daybed
The beaches feed the clubs, and in Koh Samui the names worth knowing first are Nikki Beach Koh Samui, Beach Republic and Cha Cha Moon Beach Club. Each beach above points you to the venues sitting on or near its sand, and our full directory compares every club by vibe, beach and how to book. Prices and minimum spends shift with the season, so we keep them honest and let the club quote you when you enquire.

Before you go
Which is the best beach in Koh Samui?
Chaweng is the best all round beach, with the longest stretch of clear, swimmable sand and the widest choice of clubs, food and hotels. For a calmer day, Choeng Mon and Lamai give you similar east coast water with a gentler pace.
Which Koh Samui beach is best for families?
Choeng Mon is a standout for families, with a sheltered cove and calm shallow water. Bophut and the very gentle Lipa Noi on the west coast are also easy, safe feeling choices for younger swimmers in calm conditions.
Where is the best sunset on Koh Samui?
The west coast has the island's best sunsets, with Lipa Noi and the nearby Nathon stretch looking straight across to the mainland. The east coast beaches like Chaweng face the sunrise, so swap coasts for the evening light.
When is the best time to visit Koh Samui?
The most reliable weather runs from January to April, with calm clear seas and plenty of sun. Avoid the late year window from October to December if you can, as that is the island's wettest and choppiest stretch. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.
Is Chaweng Beach too busy?
Chaweng is the busiest beach on the island, but it is long enough that the northern and quieter ends stay relaxed even when the centre is lively. If you want the same clear water with fewer people, Lamai and Choeng Mon are close by.
