The honest read

Thongson Bay is what people mean when they say there are still quiet corners on Koh Samui. At the northeast tip of the island, beyond Choeng Mon, a series of small coves hides at the end of rough side tracks, and on a weekday you can have a stretch of one almost to yourself.

The bays are a mix of sand and rock, shallow and calm, sheltered by the headlands that fold around them. A long established resort occupies one of the coves, but the overriding feeling is space and quiet, with longtail boats and birdsong in place of beach bars.

Seclusion is the whole point, and it comes at the usual price. The tracks in are bumpy, there is little in the way of facilities, and you should arrive self sufficient with water, food and shade. Come for the calm and the privacy, not for service.

Who it suits: travellers who want a quiet, almost private cove and are happy to arrive self sufficient. The reward is real seclusion within reach of the busier north coast.

Who should skip it: anyone who wants sunbeds, bars and easy parking. Choeng Mon, a short drive south, gives you facilities and far smoother access.

Common questions

Thongson Bay questions

Is Thongson Bay worth visiting?

If you want seclusion, yes. Thongson Bay is a set of quiet coves at the northeast tip of Koh Samui that stay near empty on weekdays. If you want facilities and easy access, it will frustrate you, and Choeng Mon is the easier choice.

How do you get to Thongson Bay?

The coves lie past Choeng Mon at the island northeast corner, reached down rough side tracks. A scooter handles the bumpy lanes more comfortably than a car, and signage is limited, so go slowly.

Are there facilities at Thongson Bay?

Very few. Beyond one long established resort on a single cove, the bays are quiet and undeveloped, so bring your own water, food and shade and plan to be self sufficient.

Is Thongson Bay good for swimming?

In settled weather the water is shallow and calm, sheltered by the headlands. The shoreline mixes sand and rock, so footwear helps, and you should take care on this exposed northeast corner when the wind is up.
