Bophut Beach
Best for. Couples and design minded travellers who want calm water, a boutique mood and a walkable heritage village of restaurants and bars rather than a big resort strip.
Best spot. The stretch in front of Fisherman's Village, where you are steps from the shophouse restaurants and the Friday walking street, with the headland and Koh Phangan in view.
Know this. This is north coast sand, browner and coarser than Chaweng, and the bay is shallow at low tide, so Bophut is loved for its atmosphere and sunsets more than for postcard swimming.
Bophut is the north coast bay that people fall for not for the swimming but for the mood. Behind the sand sits Fisherman's Village, a restored row of Chinese and Thai shophouses turned into restaurants, wine bars and boutique hotels, and that heritage strip gives Bophut a grown up, characterful feel the bigger beaches do not have. If your ideal day ends with a slow dinner and a glass of wine a few steps from the water rather than a pool party, this is your part of the island.
The honest part is the beach itself. This is north coast sand, more golden brown and coarser than Chaweng, and the bay shelves very gently, so at low tide the water pulls back to expose flats and swimming becomes a tide led affair. When the tide is in it is a calm, pretty wade with views across to Koh Phangan, and the protected water suits paddleboards and children, but anyone expecting deep clear swimming off the sand should set expectations and time it with the tide.
What seals Bophut for many is the Friday walking street, when Fisherman's Village closes to traffic and fills with food stalls, crafts and music, easily one of the better evenings on the island. Sunsets here lean soft and golden over the calm water. Come to Bophut for atmosphere, food and an easy boutique base, and pop over to Chaweng or the quieter west coast when you want different sand. The Koh Samui beach clubs guide covers the bars and beach venues along this coast.
Clubs on this beach

The best known beach bar on Bophut, set on the sand at the edge of Fisherman's Village, famous for swing seat bar stools, beanbags on the beach, cocktails and an evening fire show. It runs as a bar rather than a daybed club, and pricing and any reservation policy are to be confirmed by the venue.
Fisherman's Village bars
Beyond the famous beach bar, the heritage shophouse street holds wine bars, restaurants and casual spots, with hotel beach fronts along the bay. For the current lineup and to book through our form, see the Koh Samui beach clubs guide.
North coast, Koh Samui
Bophut sits on the north coast of Koh Samui, roughly ten to fifteen minutes by road from Samui Airport, which makes it one of the closest beaches to the airport and a quick first stop after you land.
Most visitors arrive by taxi, a private transfer or scooter. Aim for Fisherman's Village if you want to be among the restaurants and the Friday walking street.
Combine Bophut with the calm family beach at Maenam just west, or the Big Buddha and Bangrak nearby, for an easy north coast loop.

Common questions about Bophut Beach
Is Bophut Beach good for swimming?
It is calm but shallow, and the swimming is tide dependent. When the tide is in it is a gentle, protected wade with views to Koh Phangan, good for children and paddleboards. At low tide the water pulls back to expose flats, so time a swim with the tide and set expectations for north coast sand.
What is Fisherman's Village?
It is the restored heritage heart of Bophut, a row of old Chinese and Thai shophouses turned into restaurants, wine bars and boutique hotels just behind the beach. It gives Bophut a grown up, characterful feel and hosts the popular Friday walking street market.
When is the Bophut walking street?
The Fisherman's Village walking street runs on Friday evenings, when the heritage street closes to traffic and fills with food stalls, crafts and music. It is one of the better nights out on the island and an easy stroll from the beach hotels.
Is Bophut better for couples or families?
Both, in different ways. The boutique hotels, restaurants and wine bars suit couples and design minded travellers, while the calm shallow water when the tide is in works for families with young children. It is quieter and more grown up than the Chaweng strip.
When is the best time to visit Bophut?
December to April is the driest and calmest stretch, with the most reliable sun. Koh Samui sits on a different weather pattern from the Andaman coast, and its wettest period tends to fall around October and November, so plan around that if you can.
