Chaweng Beach
Best for. First timers and sociable travellers who want the island's best stretch of powder sand with beach clubs, watersports and a busy strip behind for nightlife.
Best spot. The central stretch in front of the bigger resorts, where the sand is widest and the swimming is best, away from the shallow reef at the quieter ends.
Know this. Chaweng is the busy heart of Koh Samui, so it is beautiful sand with a lively scene rather than a quiet escape, and the strip behind is loud at night.
Chaweng is the main event on Koh Samui, a long sweep of genuinely lovely powder white sand that is widely rated the best beach on the island, fronted by a dense run of resorts, beach clubs and watersports, and backed by the busiest strip on Samui. If you want the postcard sand with a full scene attached, this is it. If you want a quiet, undiscovered cove, this is emphatically not, and it is better to know that going in than to arrive hoping for solitude.
The sand really does deserve the praise, broad and soft and pale, and along the central stretch in front of the bigger resorts the swimming is good, with clear water and a reef that takes the edge off the swell. The quieter northern and southern ends turn shallow and a little rocky, so the middle is where you want to be for an easy swim. By day the bay buzzes with loungers, paddleboards and the occasional jet ski, so it is sociable rather than serene, and that suits a lot of people perfectly.
The honest trade off is noise and pace. The strip behind Chaweng is the island's nightlife centre, so this is a place that stays up late, and the beach clubs on the sand lean toward parties as the sun drops. ARKbar has anchored that scene on the beach for years with pool parties and fire shows, and other venues come and go along the strip. Come to Chaweng for the sand, the social energy and the easy access to food and nightlife. For calm, look to the quieter bays around the island, several of which we cover, or step over the headland to gentler Chaweng Noi.
Clubs on this beach
Chaweng has the densest beach club scene on Koh Samui, from long running party clubs on the sand to bars along the strip. A couple of well known names anchor it, and the full picture sits in our Koh Samui beach clubs guide.

A long running fixture on Chaweng sand, ARKbar runs beachfront pools, loungers, live DJs and regular pool and beach parties with evening fire shows. Day access, lounger use and any minimum spend are set by the venue and are to be confirmed, so check before you go.

A multi level beach club on the Chaweng front known for house and techno, with a chill out bar, a dancefloor and a pool. Recent reports suggest it is closed on many days, so opening, events and any minimum are to be confirmed before you plan around it.
More along the strip
Beyond the two anchors, bars and venues come and go along the Chaweng strip and the beachfront, so the lineup shifts year to year. For the current picture and booking through our enquiry form, see the Koh Samui beach clubs guide.
East coast, Koh Samui
Chaweng sits on the east coast of Koh Samui, roughly fifteen to twenty minutes by road from Samui Airport depending on traffic, which makes it one of the quickest beaches to reach after you land.
Most visitors arrive by taxi, a private transfer or scooter. The long strip behind the beach has plenty of access points, so pick a spot near your hotel or near the central stretch for the best swimming.
Combine Chaweng with quieter Chaweng Noi just over the southern headland, or head north to the calmer family bays, for a fuller picture of the east coast.

Common questions about Chaweng Beach
Is Chaweng the best beach in Koh Samui?
For sand, many people think so. Chaweng has the longest, broadest stretch of powder white sand on the island and the best central swimming. The trade off is that it is also the busiest and liveliest beach, with a nightlife strip behind, so the best beach for you depends on whether you want a scene or a quiet escape.
Can you swim at Chaweng Beach?
Yes, especially along the central stretch in the dry season, where the sand shelves gently into clear water protected by an offshore reef. The northern and southern ends turn shallow and a little rocky, and you should mind the jet ski and watersports traffic in the bay, as patrols are limited.
Are there beach clubs on Chaweng?
Yes, the densest scene on the island. ARKbar has anchored the beach for years with pools, DJs and fire shows, and other venues such as Cha Cha Moon sit along the front, though opening days vary. Bars also come and go along the strip. The Koh Samui beach clubs guide has the current picture and booking through our form.
Is Chaweng noisy at night?
It can be. The strip behind Chaweng is the nightlife centre of Koh Samui, with bars, clubs and late venues, and the beach clubs lean toward parties after dark. If you want quiet, base yourself toward the calmer ends or step over the headland to Chaweng Noi, which is much more relaxed.
When is the best time to visit Chaweng?
December to April is the driest and calmest stretch, with the most reliable sun and the best swimming. Koh Samui sits on a different weather pattern from the Andaman coast, and its wettest period tends to fall around October and November, so plan around that if you can.
