The honest read

Coral Cove is honest about what it is. Sitting on the rocky headland between Chaweng Noi and Lamai, it is a small pocket of boulders and reef rather than a broad beach, and the draw is what lies just under the surface rather than the thin strip of sand above it.

Slip in over the rocks with a mask and you find some of the most accessible coral on the island, with reef fish flickering through the shallows close to shore. Divers and snorkellers have long known it, and a couple of cliffside restaurants make the most of the view from above.

What it is not is a place to roll out a towel and a parasol for the day. There is barely any sand to speak of, the entry needs care, and the appeal fades fast if you came to sunbathe. Treat it as a snorkelling stop rather than a beach day and it pays you back.

Who it suits: snorkellers and divers, and anyone who wants a long lunch above a pretty cove. The reef close to shore is the reason to come.

Who should skip it: families wanting soft sand and easy paddling, and anyone after space to lay out for the day. Silver Beach, just along the coast, is the gentler, sandier choice.

Beach clubs near Coral Cove

No beach club operates on Coral Cove; the slope of rock simply does not allow one. A couple of restaurants perch on the cliff above with the best of the view. For daybed clubs elsewhere on the island and to send an enquiry, see our Koh Samui beach club directory.

Common questions

Coral Cove questions

Is Coral Cove a sandy beach?

Not really. Coral Cove is a rocky cove with very little sand, so it suits snorkelling far more than sunbathing. If you want soft sand and easy swimming, nearby Silver Beach is the better fit.

Is the snorkelling good at Coral Cove?

It is among the more accessible reef snorkelling on Koh Samui, with coral and fish close to shore. The water is clearest on calm mornings, and you should bring your own mask and fins.

How do you get into the water at Coral Cove?

Entry is over rocks, so water shoes and a careful approach help a great deal. Avoid the water entirely when there is any real swell, as the rocks become hazardous.

When should I visit Coral Cove?

February to April usually brings the calmest sea and the best underwater visibility. Mornings are better than afternoons, before any wind ruffles the surface.
