Phuket packs a remarkable range of beaches into one island, and the mistake most first visits make is judging the whole place by Patong. The west coast runs from the neon of Patong down through the softer family sand of Karon and Kata to the quiet, scenic south around Nai Harn and Ya Nui. The polished northwest, around Surin and Bang Tao, is where the smart hotels and the best beach clubs have gathered.

The honest read is that the season matters here more than almost anywhere else in this guide. In the dry months the west coast water turns calm and clear and swimming is a pleasure. During the southwest monsoon the same beaches can pick up real swell and dangerous rip currents, and the red flags go up for good reason. Below we rank the beaches on sand, water, crowd and how they suit different days, then point you to the clubs that sit on them.

The ranking

Ranked, not listed

Scored on water, sand, crowd and how easy it is to get onto the sand. Honest verdicts, the overrated called out.

1
West Coast

Kata

The best all rounder on the island. Soft sand, a relaxed crowd, easy food and calm clear water in the dry season make it the easy yes for most travellers. Surf picks up in the monsoon months.

2
Northwest

Surin

A short, pretty bay that has become the island's smart set beach, backed by upscale hotels and beach clubs. The sand is steep and the water deep close in, so it suits confident swimmers and a stylish day out.

3
West Coast

Kata Noi

Kata's quieter little sister around the headland, with cleaner water and a calmer, more resort feel. A great pick if Kata itself is busy and you want the same soft sand with fewer people.

South

Nai Harn

A beautiful sheltered bay at the quiet southern tip, backed by a lagoon rather than a strip of shops. Calm and clean in the dry season and a local favourite, which tells you most of what you need to know.

Bang Tao

A long sweep of sand backed by the Laguna resorts and a growing line of beach clubs. There is room to spread out, and it is the easiest place to pair a daybed with a swim.

West Coast

Freedom Beach

A postcard cove of fine white sand and clear water reached by boat or a steep track. The effort keeps it quieter than its looks deserve, so go early and bring what you need.

Karon

A long, broad beach with squeaky white sand and space to breathe even when the island is busy. Calm for swimming in the dry season, with surf and rips in the monsoon.

Kamala

A relaxed village beach that turns lively at its southern end where the big clubs sit. Easy and pleasant by day, with sunset music as the afternoon wears on.

The honest read

Who it suits, who should skip

Who should skip what? If you want a quiet, swimmable bay and an early night, Patong is not your beach and you should base yourself at Kata, Karon or the calm south around Nai Harn. If you came for nightlife and a buzzy strip with the sand a short walk away, Patong delivers exactly that and the quieter beaches will feel sleepy. The honest mistake is booking the whole trip around one beach when the island is small enough to sample several in a week.

Getting around is straightforward but worth planning. The west coast beaches sit a short drive apart, and a rented scooter or a metered transfer makes it easy to swim at Kata in the morning and watch sunset from a club on Bang Tao. The one rule that matters more than any other is the lifeguard flag system, which is there because the monsoon swell is real and the rip currents can be strong even when the water looks inviting.

When to go

The best months in Phuket

Phuket runs on the monsoon calendar. The dry northeast season from roughly November to April brings calm clear water, blue skies and the easiest swimming, and it is the peak for both crowds and prices. The southwest monsoon from May to October brings warm rain, bigger surf and stronger rip currents on the west coast, though it is greener, cheaper and quieter. Whenever you go, swim between the lifeguard flags and treat the red flags as absolute.

All Phuket beach clubs

The beaches feed the clubs, and in Phuket the names worth knowing first are Catch Beach Club, Cafe del Mar Phuket and Dream Beach Club. Each beach above points you to the venues sitting on or near its sand, and our full directory compares every club by vibe, beach and how to book. Prices and minimum spends shift with the season, so we keep them honest and let the club quote you when you enquire.

Good questions

Before you go

Which is the best beach in Phuket?

For most people Kata is the best all round beach, with soft sand, easy food, a relaxed crowd and calm clear water in the dry season. If you want something smarter, Surin and Bang Tao on the northwest coast pair good sand with the island's best beach clubs.

Which Phuket beach is best for families?

Karon and Kata have broad, gently shelving sand and plenty of space, which suits families in the calm dry season. Nai Harn in the south is another sheltered, swimmable choice with a local, low key feel rather than a busy strip.

Is it safe to swim at Phuket beaches?

In the dry season from November to April the west coast water is usually calm and clear. During the southwest monsoon the same beaches can develop strong rip currents and the lifeguards raise red flags, so always swim between the flags and never past a red one. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.

Should I avoid Patong Beach?

Patong is the busiest and most built up beach, loud and packed in peak season, but the sand itself is decent and the energy is the draw for some. If you want a quieter swim, base yourself at Kata, Karon or further south and visit Patong for the nightlife rather than the beach.

When is the best time to visit Phuket beaches?

The dry season from November to April is the best window for calm, clear water and reliable sun, with the shoulder months of November and April quieter than the December to February peak. The monsoon months trade swimming conditions for lower prices and fewer crowds.
