Koh Samui has a real night, but you have to be honest about what it is. This is a resort island with a busy nightlife strip rather than a dedicated party island, so the scene runs hot in a couple of places and stays gentle everywhere else. Land in the right town and you get beach clubs, music and a long late one. Land in the wrong bay and you get a quiet family dinner and bed by ten, which is lovely, just not what you came for.

We have ranked the beaches by where the night actually happens, from the bright Chaweng strip to grittier Lamai and the smarter sundown scene at Bophut. We have been straight about which beaches close early, where the beach parties run and any minimum spend, and the one thing every first timer needs to know, which is that the truly legendary night is a ferry away on Koh Phangan.

The short version. Chaweng owns the island's nightlife, Lamai is the rawer and cheaper second town, Bophut is the stylish early evening, the quieter bays send you to bed, and the Full Moon party belongs to Koh Phangan next door.

Ranked for the night

The best party beaches

Matched to how loud a night you actually want.

01
East coast

Chaweng

The island's nightlife heart, a long east coast beach backed by the main strip of beach bars, clubs and cocktail spots, with daytime beach parties at the busy northern end. It is bright, crowded and commercial rather than cool, but it is where the choice and the late hours are. Venues, line ups and any minimum spend change over time, so we mark those as to be confirmed.

East coast

Lamai

The island's second party town, rawer, cheaper and a little rowdier than Chaweng, with a concentrated bar scene set back from a good swimming beach. It suits travellers who want the night without the gloss and the higher Chaweng prices. The late edge can get seedy in patches, so pick your spot, and treat opening hours and venues as to be confirmed.

North coast

Bophut

Not a rave, a smarter evening. Fisherman's Village behind the Bophut sand turns its old shophouse street into a walk of bars, live music and restaurants, busiest on the weekly Walking Street night. It is the grown up option, a stylish sundown and a few drinks rather than a club til dawn, and the calm bay is pleasant the morning after.

East coast

Chaweng Noi

The quieter southern extension of Chaweng, a calmer bay with resort bars and sunset spots rather than a strip, close enough to walk or hop to the main action but a step back from the noise. It suits a group that wants the party nearby but a peaceful base to sleep, with a swimmable beach by day. A good middle ground.

Maenam

Quiet and laid back rather than loud, Maenam earns its place as the practical launch point for the Full Moon party, with the Koh Phangan ferry close by. By night it stays mellow, a few beach bars and a hammock, so it works as the calm base from which you raid the big party next door and come home to sleep. Ferry times are seasonal and to be confirmed.

The honest read

The honest read on the night

The single thing to understand is that Koh Samui is a resort island with a party strip, not a party island. The night is real but concentrated, so where you stay decides what you get. Base yourself in Chaweng and the bars, beach clubs and late hours are on your doorstep. Base yourself in one of the calm western or southern bays and you will be hunting a tuk tuk to find any of it. Match your bed to the night you want and you will not be disappointed.

For the loudest, most varied scene it is Chaweng, bright and busy and a little brash, with the daytime beach parties at the north end and the clubs along the strip. Lamai is the cheaper, grittier alternative, and Bophut is the stylish early evening for travellers who would rather have live music and a good dinner than a club til dawn. Venues, line ups and any minimum spend change with the season, so we mark them as to be confirmed and suggest checking what is actually open before you commit a night.

The overrated assumption is that the famous Full Moon party happens on Samui. It does not. The real event is on Haad Rin beach on Koh Phangan, the next island north, a short ferry away, and no amount of full moon themed bars on Chaweng is the same thing. If that night is the point of your trip, plan it as a ferry mission from a base like Maenam, and treat Samui itself as the comfortable island to recover on. Conditions, dates and ferry times are seasonal and never guaranteed, so confirm them locally.

The club layer

Beach clubs and the day to night

Browse Koh Samui beach clubs

A beach club bridges the day and the night here, with loungers and a pool by afternoon and music and cocktails as the sun drops. Chaweng and Bophut hold most of the island's named beach and pool clubs, while the quieter bays keep it to a simple beach bar. We never invent a venue, a line up or a minimum spend, so unconfirmed details are marked to be confirmed. Browse the directory and send one enquiry to lock your date.

Book a beach club

We pass your enquiry to the club so they can confirm availability and any minimum spend. Some bookings may earn us a commission at no cost to you. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.

Good questions

Before you go

Where is the best party beach in Koh Samui?

Chaweng. The long east coast beach carries the island's main nightlife strip, with beach bars, clubs and the daytime beach parties at the busy northern end. Lamai is the second party town, grittier and a little cheaper, while Bophut offers a smarter evening. For the legendary all night rave you leave the island for the Full Moon party on neighbouring Koh Phangan.

Is there a Full Moon party on Koh Samui?

No. The famous Full Moon party runs on Koh Phangan, the next island north, reached by a short ferry, not on Koh Samui itself. Plenty of Samui bars lay on full moon themed nights, but the real event is on Haad Rin beach on Koh Phangan. If that party is the point of your trip, base yourself with the ferry in mind and check the current dates, which we mark as to be confirmed.

Is Chaweng or Lamai better for nightlife?

Chaweng is bigger, glossier and more varied, with beach clubs, cocktail bars and clubs along the strip, so it suits a first party trip. Lamai is rawer and cheaper, with a more concentrated bar scene and a rowdier late edge. Chaweng for choice and beach parties, Lamai if you want it grittier and lighter on the wallet.

Are there beach clubs in Koh Samui?

Yes, mostly along Chaweng and Bophut, where pool and beach clubs run day to sunset sessions with music, loungers and food. Names, opening status and any minimum spend change over time, so we mark those details as to be confirmed and suggest checking the current line up before you go. Browse our directory and send one enquiry to confirm your date.

Is Koh Samui good for a party holiday?

It is good rather than legendary. Samui has a real nightlife in Chaweng and Lamai, beach clubs and sunset bars, but it is a resort island first, so the scene is more mixed and family adjacent than a dedicated party island. For the all out experience the trip is to add a Full Moon night on Koh Phangan, with Samui as the comfortable base.
