Maenam Beach
Best for. Families, longer stay visitors and anyone wanting calm shallow water, casuarina shade and lower prices, with a low key village rather than a nightlife strip behind.
Best spot. The central and eastern stretch, where casuarina trees shade the sand and the water stays calm and shallow, ideal for an easy paddle with children.
Know this. Maenam is deliberately quiet with a thin spread of services, so it rewards people who want a relaxed base over those who want a busy beach scene on their doorstep.
Maenam is the long, quiet bay on the north coast that the island's value seekers and repeat families quietly love. It runs for a couple of kilometres, the sand is soft, the water is calm and shallow, and stands of casuarina trees throw real shade onto the beach, which is rarer here than you would think. Prices for rooms and food sit below Chaweng and Bophut, and the mood is unhurried, so people who come to read, swim gently and slow down tend to stay longer than they planned.
The trade is that Maenam is deliberately low key. Services are spread thin along the bay rather than packed into a strip, so you will not stumble out of your hotel into a wall of bars and beach clubs, and that is precisely the point for the people who choose it. There is a small village and a pier behind the beach, and the W Koh Samui resort anchors the western end with a more upscale, design led presence, but most of Maenam stays simple. The views north to Koh Phangan are a lovely constant.
Honest expectations matter here. The water shallows at low tide as it does along much of the north coast, the sand is golden brown rather than powder white, and you trade nightlife and buzz for calm and value. If that sounds like a downgrade it is not the beach for you, and Chaweng or Lamai will fit better. If it sounds like the holiday you actually want, Maenam is one of the most relaxing bases on Samui. The Koh Samui beach clubs guide covers the venues along this coast.
Clubs on this beach
Maenam is quiet by design, so the beach club scene here is led by one upscale resort at the western end rather than a strip of venues. The full picture sits in our Koh Samui beach clubs guide.

The W Koh Samui resort sits at the western end of Maenam and brings a design led pool, the WET Deck and the Woobar to this quiet stretch, with daybeds, cocktails and DJ sessions. Day access for non guests, any minimum spend and event nights are set by the resort and are to be confirmed.
Beach bars along the bay
Away from the resort, Maenam keeps a thin spread of casual beach bars and small resort fronts rather than a club strip. For the current picture and to book through our form, see the Koh Samui beach clubs guide.
North coast, Koh Samui
Maenam sits on the north coast of Koh Samui, roughly twenty to thirty minutes by road west of Samui Airport, between Bophut and the northwest beaches.
Most visitors arrive by taxi, a private transfer or scooter. The beach is long, so pick an access point near your hotel and the central stretch for the easiest swimming and the best shade.
Combine Maenam with boutique Bophut just east, or the quiet seafood beach at Bang Por to the west, for a relaxed north coast run.

Common questions about Maenam Beach
Is Maenam Beach good for families?
Yes, it is one of the better family choices on Samui. The water is calm and shallow with a gentle gradient, the casuarina trees give natural shade, and the relaxed, low key setting suits young children. The main trade is that services are spread thin, so it is quiet rather than full of beach activity.
Is Maenam a quiet beach?
Very. Maenam is one of the quietest of Samui's main beaches, with resorts and small restaurants spread along a long bay rather than a busy strip. People choose it for calm, value and a slow pace, and it rewards those who want a relaxed base over a lively scene.
Can you swim at Maenam Beach?
Usually yes. The water is calm and protected with a gentle shelf, which makes for an easy wade or swim, though it shallows at low tide like much of the north coast. Patrols are not assured, so judge the water yourself and watch children.
Is Maenam cheaper than Chaweng?
Generally yes. Room and food prices at Maenam tend to sit below Chaweng and Bophut, which is a big part of its appeal for longer stays and families. The W Koh Samui resort at the western end is the upscale exception on an otherwise value friendly bay.
When is the best time to visit Maenam?
December to April is the driest and calmest stretch, with the most reliable sun. Koh Samui runs on a different weather pattern from the Andaman coast, and its wettest period tends to fall around October and November, so plan around that if you can.
