The verdict

Best for. Families and couples who want the island's calmest water and best sunsets, plus anyone who wants to pair a slow west coast day with a headline beach club.

Best spot. Anywhere along the central bay for sunset, when the flat water mirrors the sky. For a club day, Nikki Beach anchors the shore.

Know this. Lipa Noi is very shallow and the tide goes out a long way, exposing wide flats, so it is famous for sunsets and gentle paddling more than for deep swimming.

Sand
Soft and wide
Soft pale sand that broadens into wide, firm flats when the tide drops, giving the bay an unusually open, mirror like look at low water.
Water
Very calm and shallow
Among the calmest water on the island, sheltered and flat, but very shallow with a long tidal range, so deep swimming is limited and best timed with the incoming tide.
Entry
Free public beach
The sand is public and free. Loungers and shade at the beach club and resorts are charged or tied to a spend, which is to be confirmed by venue.
Facilities
Spread out, one big club
A quiet bay of resorts and small restaurants, anchored by a headline beach club. Nathon town and the car ferry pier are a short drive north.
Lifeguard
Not guaranteed
Treat this as a swim at your own care beach. Patrols are not assured, so judge the water and the tide yourself.
Best months
December to April
The driest, calmest stretch on Samui, with the most reliable sun and the clearest sunsets. October and November tend to be the wettest.
The honest read

Lipa Noi is the west coast bay that wins on two counts, calm and sunsets. Facing west across the channel toward the mainland, it gets the island's most reliable golden evenings, and because the water here is sheltered and flat it is often glassy when the east coast is choppy. The sand is soft and pale, and at low tide it broadens into wide firm flats that turn the whole bay into a mirror, one of the more photogenic sights on Samui.

The honest counterpoint is depth. Lipa Noi is very shallow with a long tidal range, so when the tide is out the water retreats a long way and you are left wading across flats rather than swimming. Time it with the incoming tide and it is a calm, easy swim that is wonderful for small children, but anyone expecting to step off the sand into deep clear water should plan around the tide chart. This is a place that rewards patience and a sense of timing.

The bay is otherwise quiet and spread out, a run of resorts and small restaurants rather than a strip, but it carries one headline name. Nikki Beach Koh Samui sits on this shore and brings a glossy pool, daybeds and Sunday brunch energy to an otherwise sleepy coast. Come to Lipa Noi for the sunset and the calm, bring the family for the shallow water, and use the club for a polished day out. The Koh Samui beach clubs guide covers it and the rest of the island.

Getting there and essentials

West coast, Koh Samui

Lipa Noi sits on the west coast of Koh Samui, roughly thirty to forty minutes by road from Samui Airport, south of Nathon town and the Raja and Seatran car ferry piers.

Most visitors arrive by taxi, a private transfer or scooter. The bay is long and quiet, so pick an access point near your hotel or the beach club, and check the tide for swimming.

Combine Lipa Noi with the secluded southwest bay at Taling Ngam or the quiet seafood beach at Bang Por for a calm, sunset facing west coast run.
