Koh Samui photographs as a coconut palm idyll of long pale sand, and the long pale sand is exactly where the snorkelling is not. The reef here clings to the granite headlands, the warm rounded boulders that punctuate the coast between the famous beaches and shelter the fish. Chaweng and Lamai are wide and sandy and beautiful to walk, but slip on a mask and there is nothing below but cloudy shallows. The snorkelling lives in the gaps, in the small rock framed coves that the brochures pass over.

The aesthete's reward on Samui is the texture of those coves, the grey granite against the green Gulf water and the coconut palms leaning over warm sand. You wade in among the boulders, the water shading from pale jade to deeper green, and the reef gathers around the rock. The marine life is modest beside Koh Tao to the north, but the setting is gentle and lovely, and on a calm morning in the dry season it is an easy, pretty swim. Read the season and the hour, and the Gulf rewards you.

Picked for how close the reef sits, how clear the water runs and how calm the cove stays in season.

01
Best reef

Coral Cove

A small rock framed cove on the headland between Chaweng and Lamai, with hard coral and reef fish among the granite a few strokes from the sand. The best shore snorkel on the island and lovely in the morning light against the boulders. Wear reef shoes for the rocky entry and come early.

02
Crystal bay

Silver Beach

A petite cove also known as Crystal Bay, tucked between Chaweng and Lamai, with clear water and reef along the rocks at each end. Small and pretty, it photographs beautifully and rewards a calm morning float. Sheltered and easy when the sea lies flat, busier on the sand by midday.

03
Sheltered bay

Choeng Mon

A calm crescent on the northeast tip with a tiny islet you can wade or swim to at low tide and reef along its rocks. Gentle, family friendly and quieter than the big beaches, it suits a slow morning. The clearest water comes early before the day warms and the breeze picks up.

04
Quiet cove

Thongson Bay

A secluded double bay on the northeast coast, reached down a quiet lane, with rocky ends that gather fish and very few people. One of the calmest, most private feeling spots on Samui and a lovely place to float undisturbed. Modest reef but a beautiful, peaceful setting.

05
Calm northeast

Samrong

A sheltered bay on the quiet northeast shore, calm and clear in the right season with rocks at the headland that draw a few fish. Low key and gentle, it is more about the still water and the setting than a busy reef. Best on a flat morning in the dry months.

The honest read

The honest read on snorkelling here

Be honest about Chaweng and Lamai. They are the island's headline beaches, long and sandy and lined with life, but they are poor for snorkelling, with little reef, water churned by boats and swimmers, and nothing much to see beneath the surface. People arrive with a mask expecting coral and leave disappointed. They are beaches for a swim, a sunset and a long dinner, not for snorkelling, and the rocky coves above are the honest place to put your face in the water.

The truly fine snorkelling in this corner of the Gulf is a boat ride away. Koh Tao and the joined islets of Koh Nang Yuan to the north hold the clearest water and the healthiest reef in the region, and the Ang Thong Marine Park to the west is a beautiful day out among limestone islands. Both are full day trips from Samui by boat. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed, the Gulf monsoon runs roughly October to December, and a calm clear morning can cloud over by afternoon.

The aesthete's rule for Samui is to follow the granite. The prettiest and most rewarding snorkels are the boulder coves on the headlands, at their best on a calm morning in the dry season. Go early, wear reef shoes for the rocks, give the coral room, and save the spectacular reef for a day on the water at Koh Tao.

The club layer

Where to settle after the swim

Koh Samui beach clubs

Koh Samui keeps its beach clubs and day beds on the long sandy beaches rather than the rocky snorkelling coves, so the morning swim and the lazy afternoon sit a short drive apart. After a float at Coral Cove or Silver Beach you are close to the loungers, pools and sunset bars along Chaweng, Bophut and the quiet north. We keep an honest list of where you can book a day bed and a minimum spend and where the beach is simply free, so you can match the early snorkel to the afternoon you want.

Good questions

Before you go

What is the best beach for snorkelling in Koh Samui?

Coral Cove on the rocky headland between Chaweng and Lamai is the best shore snorkel on the island, with reef and fish among the granite close to the sand. It is clearest on a calm morning in the dry season. Wear reef shoes for the rocky entry and go early.

When is the water clearest for snorkelling in Koh Samui?

The Gulf keeps its own calendar. The calmest, clearest water runs from roughly February to September, while the rainy, windy monsoon from October to December stirs the sea and clouds the shallows. Snorkel in the morning when the water is flattest.

Is Chaweng good for snorkelling?

No. Chaweng and Lamai are long sandy beaches with little reef, busy water and boat traffic, and they are poor for a mask. The snorkelling sits on the rocky headlands between and beyond them, at Coral Cove, Silver Beach and the quiet northeast bays instead.

Do you need a boat to snorkel in Koh Samui?

Not for the rocky coves above, which are shore swims off the sand. The finest snorkelling in the Gulf is a day trip by boat to Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan, or into the Ang Thong Marine Park. For an easy reef close to shore the headland coves are enough.

Are there coral reefs off the Koh Samui beaches?

There is modest reef along the rocky headlands at Coral Cove, Silver Beach and Choeng Mon, with hard coral and reef fish close in. The richest, clearest reef is around Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan. Treat the Samui coves as easy and pretty rather than spectacular coral.
