The best family beaches in the world

We have judged the world's family beaches on the things that actually decide a day with children: calm shallow water, a gentle sandy entry, shade, and somewhere to swim safely. Here are the best on Earth, ranked, each with the honest verdict and the one thing to know before you go.

The verdict

  • Who it is for. Parents who want a beach that is genuinely easy and safe with children, not one that looks perfect in a photo and turns into a struggle at the water's edge.
  • The pick. Grace Bay in Turks and Caicos for the all round best family swim. Ko Olina Lagoons on Oahu for toddlers who need water as flat as a pool.
  • The one thing to know. The most famous family names are often the worst choice. Waikiki and Kuta are crowded or unsafe; go to Ko Olina, Kailua or Sanur instead.
The brief

Why these made the list

A family beach is judged on the water, not the postcard. I have ranked these on the criteria that actually decide whether a day with children works: how calm and shallow the water is, how gently the sand shelves at the entry, whether there is shade through the afternoon, and whether lifeguards and facilities sit close behind. A beach can be the most beautiful on its island and still fail every one of those tests.

So this is a hard list, and a comparative one. I say plainly why a beloved name only reached the middle of the order, and where a quieter neighbour does the job better. Several entries are seasonal and only earn their place inside a narrow weather window, which I flag. Where a famous family beach is overrated I name it and send you somewhere that actually delivers on the sand.

The ranking

The best family beaches, in order

Ranked on calm shallow water, gentle entry, shade and lifeguards, with the honest verdict and the one thing to know about each.

1
The calm pale turquoise shallows and powder sand of Grace BayPhoto: Carlos Alberto do Amaral via Google
Providenciales, Turks and Caicos

Grace Bay

Nothing else on this list combines the things that actually matter to a family the way Grace Bay does: a barrier reef that flattens the swell, a gentle sandy shelf that lets small children wade out safely, water clear enough to count your toes, and resorts with shade and lifeguarded stretches behind it. It is the beach every other family shore is measured against, and it wins because it gives up nothing. Walk away from the busy resort frontage to find quieter sand, and you have the most complete family swim in the world.

2
The walled calm water of a Ko Olina lagoon with grass and palms behindPhoto: mightydo via Google
Oahu, Hawaii

Ko Olina Lagoons

Four man made lagoons walled off from the Pacific, each as flat as a swimming pool, with lifeguards, grass, shade and easy parking. For toddlers and nervous swimmers there is nothing safer in Hawaii, which is exactly why it sits second rather than first: this is engineered calm, not the natural article, and the lagoons fill quickly on weekends. For pure peace of mind with very young children it arguably beats even Grace Bay.

3
The shaded casuarina fringe and shallow lagoon water of Mont ChoisyPhoto: Tihomir Šarčević via Google
North coast, Mauritius

Mont Choisy

A long curving lagoon held by the reef, with shallow warm water and a deep belt of casuarina trees that give the rare gift of natural shade all afternoon. It matches Ko Olina for calm and beats it for setting, but slips to third because the lagoon floor carries patches of seagrass underfoot and the popular end draws weekend crowds. For a natural calm water swim with shade built in, few beaches anywhere do it better.

4
The calm crescent bay and seagrass shallows of Akumal where turtles grazePhoto: Akumal Bay Beach & Spa Resort via Google
Riviera Maya, Mexico

Akumal Bay

A sheltered crescent where green turtles graze the seagrass within wading distance of the sand, which makes the snorkeling a genuine thrill for older children rather than a chore. The swimming is easy and the entry gentle, and it ranks above the big resort beaches for that wildlife payoff. It drops out of the top three because access is now regulated and busy, and the seagrass that feeds the turtles is not to every small swimmer's taste underfoot.

5
The wide shallow shelf and fine pale sand of Playa de Muro near AlcudiaPhoto: Raphael Weiß via Google
Alcudia, Mallorca

Playa de Muro

The Mediterranean family standard: a wide shelf so shallow you can walk a child out fifty metres and still be at their waist, with fine soft sand, lifeguards and pine shade behind. Nothing in Europe handles small children better, and that is why it leads the Mediterranean entries here. It ranks fifth only because August packs it shoulder to shoulder and the sea, while calm, runs cooler than the tropical beaches above it.

6
The reef protected lagoon and calm morning water at Sanur in BaliPhoto: João Marcos via Google
Bali, Indonesia

Sanur

The one Bali beach that genuinely suits families, a reef protected lagoon with flat morning water and a long paved path good for strollers, and a world away from the dangerous surf and rips of Kuta and Seminyak. It earns its place as the safe choice on a island better known for waves. It sits sixth because the tide retreats to a shallow wade at low water and the sand is a grey gold rather than tropical white.

7
The long gently shelving sand and calm water of Beau Vallon on MahePhoto: Liudmila Ianchuk via Google
Mahe, Seychelles

Beau Vallon

The Seychelles beach that actually works for a family, a long gently shelving sweep with lifeguards, shops, boats and easy swimming, rather than the shallow photogenic coves that look perfect and disappoint in the water. It lacks the sculpted granite of the famous beaches, and that is precisely why it swims so well for children. Among the Seychelles it is the honest family pick, even if it will never win the postcard contest.

The shallow turquoise flats over white sand at Cala Brandinchi in SardiniaPhoto: Davide Malinverno via Google
San Teodoro, Sardinia

Cala Brandinchi

Nicknamed little Tahiti for good reason, a shallow turquoise flat over white sand that is warm, clear and perfect for paddling toddlers. As a pretty calm water cove it rivals anything in the Mediterranean. It ranks eighth rather than higher because it is small, parking in July is a real trial, and there is almost no natural shade, so you arrive early and bring your own.

9
The sheltered shallow bay and tavernas at the sand of Almyrida in CretePhoto: Almyrida Beach Hotel via Google
Chania, Crete

Almyrida

A sheltered shallow bay on the gentler side of Chania, with warm calm water, tavernas right at the sand and a local rather than packaged feel. For the youngest swimmers it is among the kindest entries in western Crete. It sits here rather than higher only because it is smaller and less polished than the heavyweight resort beaches above it, which is part of its charm.

10
The calm summer crescent and easy snorkel rocks of Napili Bay on MauiPhoto: Jack Twait via Google
Maui, Hawaii

Napili Bay

A small golden crescent that turns calm and snorkel friendly through the summer, with a sandy entry and turtles often just off the rocks. In the right season it is a lovely family swim. It ranks tenth because it is seasonal in a way the leaders are not: winter brings surf and a shore break that can knock children off their feet, so this is a beach you match to the calendar.

The reef held shallows and soft sand of Bavaro beach in Punta CanaPhoto: Joey Spendlove via Google
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Bavaro

Classic reef held Caribbean shallows, warm and soft underfoot with every amenity a family could want lined up behind it. For easy, safe, endlessly equipped swimming it delivers. It ranks for convenience rather than character, though, because it is a continuous wall of resorts and vendors with little quiet to be found, so you trade atmosphere for sheer ease.

The sheltered horseshoe of imported pale sand and calm water at AmadoresPhoto: Karina Rodriguez via Google
Gran Canaria

Amadores

A purpose built horseshoe of imported pale sand with netted, reliably calm swimming and warmth all year round, which makes it a dependable winter family choice when Europe is cold. It does the one job well. It sits twelfth because it is compact and can feel crowded and engineered, the price you pay for that guaranteed calm.

The casuarina shaded sand and calm season water of Nai Yang on PhuketPhoto: Shokry Mahsob via Google
Phuket, Thailand

Nai Yang

A quiet national park beach with casuarina shade, calm shallow water in the dry season and a low key local feel that the famous Phuket strips have long lost. It is the best calm family beach on the island. It ranks here because it is firmly seasonal: the monsoon turns the sea rough and the flags red, so its place on the list depends entirely on visiting between November and April.

14
The calm west coast water and soft sand of Mullins beach in BarbadosPhoto: Dave Dubique via Google
West coast, Barbados

Mullins

Dependable calm on the sheltered west coast, with soft sand, easy entry, shade and a well known beach bar for lunch, which covers everything a family day needs. It is reliably gentle where the Atlantic east coast is wild. It slots in here because it is on the small side and the daybeds crowd the sand in season, so it works best on an early start.

The swimmable water and soft sand of Kendwa beach in ZanzibarPhoto: allanporai via Google
Zanzibar

Kendwa

The Zanzibar beach that escapes the island's extreme tide, so you can actually swim through much of the day rather than watching the sea vanish to the horizon. On a coast ruled by tides that is a rare and valuable thing for a family. It ranks mid table because it takes on a party edge at sunset, so it suits days more than late afternoons with young children.

The long sand under ochre cliffs and gentle summer shelving of FalesiaPhoto: Sebastian Mintel via Google
Algarve, Portugal

Falesia

A long, well run beach under glowing ochre cliffs, with lifeguards and gentle shelving through the calm summer months. As a big organised family beach it is excellent and easy. It ranks below the Mediterranean and tropical entries because the Atlantic here runs noticeably cooler and choppier, so the swimming, while safe, is more bracing than blissful.

The wide soft sand and usually gentle water of Kailua beach on OahuPhoto: Phillip Turnage via Google
Oahu, Hawaii

Kailua

A wide sweep of soft sand that is usually gentle in the lee of the trade winds, with lifeguards, shade trees and superb conditions for paddling and kayaking. As an all rounder it is a joy. It sits just behind Ko Olina because the same wind that makes it a kite and paddle paradise can also chop the water, so it is less consistently flat than its walled neighbour up the coast.

The calm clear shallows and resort frontage of Cable Beach in NassauPhoto: JPe Tejado via Google
Nassau, Bahamas

Cable Beach

An easy resort strip near Nassau with calm clear shallows and everything a family needs on tap, from loungers to lunch. For convenience and safe swimming it scores well. It ranks for ease rather than escape, being developed and busy, so you come here for a frictionless beach day rather than a sense of getting away from it all.

The long reef held lagoon and casuarina shade at Flic en Flac in MauritiusPhoto: Katya Vttk via Google
West coast, Mauritius

Flic en Flac

A long reef held lagoon on the calmer west coast, shallow and warm with casuarina shade and far more room to spread out than Mont Choisy. The calm is similar and the space is welcome. It ranks lower than its northern sibling because the lagoon carries rocky and seagrass patches and the public stretch draws sizeable weekend crowds.

The long shallow white sand bay and warm flats of La Cinta in SardiniaPhoto: Z. Černák via Google
San Teodoro, Sardinia

La Cinta

A long shallow bay of white sand with warm flats and a lagoon behind that draws flamingos, gorgeous and gentle for wading children. As a shallow paddling beach it is hard to fault on looks. It sits at twenty because it is exposed to the afternoon wind that funnels along this coast and gets extremely busy at the height of summer.

The small sheltered coves of calm clear water at Illetas near PalmaPhoto: Vic padin via Google
Calvia, Mallorca

Illetas

A cluster of small sheltered coves of calm, clear water a short drive from Palma, with easy entry and a smart, settled feel. For a convenient calm swim near the city it is lovely. It ranks here because the coves are genuinely tiny and fill fast, so latecomers find little sand left in season.

The lifeguarded grassy beach parks and calm summer water at Kamaole on MauiPhoto: Stephen Chase via Google
Kihei, Maui

Kamaole

Three lifeguarded beach parks in a row at Kihei, each with grass, shade, restrooms and gentle summer swimming, which makes them the practical Maui family choice. The facilities do a lot of the work here. They rank in the mid twenties because winter shore break and a brisk morning wind can intrude, so the calm is reliable mainly in the warmer months.

The very long shallow sandy beach and warm water of Georgioupoli in CretePhoto: Lionel DEBIEU via Google
Crete

Georgioupoli

An exceptionally long shallow sandy beach where children have room to run and the water shelves gently for a safe wade, with lifeguarded sections in season. The sheer space is its strength. It sits here because the open stretch catches the wind and can pick up a chop on breezy afternoons, so a calmer morning is the move.

The bath warm shallows and soft sand of Playa Norte on Isla MujeresPhoto: Diego Gabriel via Google
Isla Mujeres, Mexico

Playa Norte

Bath warm shallows you can wade out a long way without passing your waist, over soft white sand at the tip of little Isla Mujeres, which is idyllic for small swimmers. The calm and the warmth are first rate. It ranks mid table because it is busy with day trippers from lunchtime onward and offers very little quiet, so the early ferry is essential.

25
The long open sweep of sand and gentle summer water at Meia Praia in LagosPhoto: Ian Povey via Google
Lagos, Algarve

Meia Praia

A long open sweep of sand near Lagos with lifeguards and easy swimming in calm summer spells, and plenty of room for a family to claim its own patch. Space and supervision are the draw. It ranks below Falesia because it is more exposed to the Atlantic and the water runs cooler, so it shines mainly on settled, windless days.

The manicured reef protected lagoon and calm high water of Nusa Dua in BaliPhoto: Taras Kushnir via Google
Bali, Indonesia

Nusa Dua

A manicured resort lagoon, reef protected and calm at high water, with tidy sand and a paved promenade, offering safe family swimming in a controlled enclave. It does deliver gentle conditions. It ranks here because it is a resort bubble and the tide empties the lagoon to a long muddy wade at low water, so swimming is firmly tide dependent.

27
The shallow reef protected lagoon and village feel of Anse Royale on MahePhoto: Christian Schmidt via Google
Mahe, Seychelles

Anse Royale

A shallow lagoon protected by a reef, with calm flats and a real village beach atmosphere away from the resorts, which makes it a gentle and characterful family swim. The calm and the local feel are both genuine. It ranks here because seagrass and coral patches mean reef shoes, and the break out at the reef is for confident older swimmers only.

The calm west coast water and turtle snorkeling at Paynes Bay in BarbadosPhoto: Amelia Magitteri via Google
West coast, Barbados

Paynes Bay

Calm sheltered water on the west coast with soft sand and turtles to snorkel just offshore, a reliable and rewarding family swim. The turtle snorkel lifts it above a plain calm bay. It ranks in the late twenties because the beach is narrow and boats work close to the swimming zone, so you keep a careful eye on where children paddle.

The vast dune backed beach and gently shelving lagoon end of MaspalomasPhoto: gheorghe iosif via Google
Gran Canaria

Maspalomas

A vast dune backed beach with sun all year and a gently shelving stretch by the lagoon end that suits a family wade. The scale and the reliable warmth are the appeal. It ranks here because it is exposed and can turn windy, and the amenities sit a long walk from the quietest sand, so it rewards a little planning.

The gentle dry season bay and lifeguards at Kata beach on PhuketPhoto: Jacek Lesniowski via Google
Phuket, Thailand

Kata

A gentle bay in the dry season with lifeguards and soft sand, an easy family swim from November to April when the sea lies flat. In the right window it is genuinely good for children. It ranks low because it is strictly seasonal: the monsoon brings dangerous surf and red flags, and a beach you cannot swim at for half the year cannot rank higher.

The long east coast lagoon and white sand of Belle Mare in MauritiusPhoto: K T via Google
East coast, Mauritius

Belle Mare

A long east coast lagoon of fine white sand, shallow and warm, with plenty of space to spread out away from the busier north. The room and the sand quality are real pluses. It ranks here because the east coast catches the trade winds more than the sheltered north, and the lagoon has weedy patches, so conditions are less consistently glassy.

The shallow turquoise flats off the sandbar at Su Giudeu near ChiaPhoto: mirko curridori via Google
Chia, Sardinia

Su Giudeu

A beautiful shallow paddle to close the list, turquoise flats off a sandbar that are warm, clear and gentle enough for the smallest waders. As a scene it is postcard pretty. It ranks last here because it is small, exposed to the Chia wind and short on shade and facilities, so it is a lovely half day rather than a full family base.

Honest notes

How I ranked them, and how to enjoy them

Two things decide whether a family beach delivers: the water and the timing. The leaders here, Grace Bay, Ko Olina and Mont Choisy, win because their calm is reliable rather than occasional, held by a reef, a wall or a sheltered coast. The beaches lower down are often just as lovely on the right day but exposed to wind, tide or season, which is precisely why they rank where they do.

Tide and season are the traps. Sanur and Nusa Dua empty to a long wade at low water, Kendwa is the rare Zanzibar beach that escapes the worst of it, and Kata, Nai Yang and Napili Bay swing from gentle to dangerous with the season. Check the tide table and the local flags before you commit a morning, and treat any seasonal beach as a calendar decision first.

Finally, ignore reputation. The names parents most often reach for, Waikiki and Kuta, are among the worst family swims on their islands, crowded and built up or genuinely unsafe. The honest move is to look one beach along: Ko Olina or Kailua instead of Waikiki, Sanur instead of Kuta. The quieter neighbour almost always gives you the calmer water and the easier day.

Questions, answered

Common questions

What makes a beach good for families?

Calm shallow water with a gentle sandy entry, some shade, and lifeguards or facilities nearby matter far more than how a beach photographs. We weight safe swimming and easy entry above looks, which is why several famous photogenic beaches do not appear here.

What is the single best family beach in the world?

Grace Bay in Turks and Caicos for the rare combination of reef calm, a shallow sandy shelf and full amenities. For toddlers who need water as flat as a pool, the walled Ko Olina Lagoons on Oahu are the safest swim anywhere.

Which famous beaches are overrated for families?

Waikiki on Oahu is crowded and built up with mediocre swimming, and Kuta on Bali has rips and surf that are genuinely unsafe for young children. Go to Ko Olina or Kailua instead of Waikiki, and to Sanur instead of Kuta.

Are these beaches safe for young children to swim?

Conditions are typical rather than guaranteed. The ranked beaches are chosen for usually calm shallow water, but the sea changes with weather, tide and season, so always check local flags and follow lifeguard guidance before letting children in.

When is the best time to visit family beaches?

Shoulder season and early morning give you the calmest water and the most space. Seasonal beaches such as Kata, Nai Yang and Napili Bay only work in their dry or summer window, so match the beach to the calendar.

Do family beaches have lifeguards and facilities?

Many here do, including stretches of Grace Bay, Ko Olina, Playa de Muro, Falesia and Kamaole. Cover is often seasonal, so confirm that lifeguards are on duty for your dates rather than assuming they are there year round.
