The honest read

Kendwa is what a lot of people are really looking for when they head to Nungwi. It lies just down the coast on the northwest tip, a short hop by road or a walk along the sand at low tide, and it shares the single best feature of its famous neighbour, deep water that stays swimmable at every state of the tide. What it adds is a little more room and a slightly slower pulse, with a wide soft beach that faces straight into the sunset.

For years Kendwa was the quieter alternative, and a good deal of that still holds. The sand is broader, the frontage is less densely packed than central Nungwi, and a long afternoon here can feel genuinely relaxed. The west facing aspect makes it one of the finest places on the island to watch the sun drop into the sea, drink in hand, and the swimming is easy and clear right through the day rather than vanishing at low tide as it does on the east coast.

The honest caveat is that Kendwa is no secret any more. Resorts have multiplied along the back of the beach, and the famous full moon parties at the long running beach venues here pull large, lively crowds roughly once a month, turning the quiet strip into a dance floor until the early hours. That is brilliant if it is what you came for and frustrating if it is not, so check the lunar calendar against your dates. Vendors are present too, though generally a little less relentless than at the centre of Nungwi.

Treat Kendwa as the balanced choice on the north coast, swimmable water and sunsets without quite the intensity of Nungwi, and plan around the parties depending on which experience you want. Base yourself toward the ends of the strip for more calm, walk over to Nungwi for the dhow yards and a change of scene, and book diving or a sunset cruise through a trusted operator. Getting there and essentials

Kendwa, Kendwa, Zanzibar

Kendwa lies on the northwest coast of Unguja just south of Nungwi, around an hour to ninety minutes by road from Stone Town and the airport. Most people arrive by private transfer or taxi, and at lower tides you can walk along the beach between Kendwa and Nungwi in about twenty minutes.

Bring sun cover and reef safe sun cream, carry small cash for drinks and tips, and agree boat trip prices before you set out. Dress modestly away from the beach in respect of local custom, and if you want to avoid or join a full moon party, check the lunar calendar against your travel dates in advance.

Common questions

Kendwa FAQ

Is Kendwa better than Nungwi?

It depends on what you want. Kendwa shares the same all tide swimming and sunsets but generally feels calmer and more spacious, while Nungwi has more bars, the dhow yards and a livelier scene. Many visitors enjoy both.

Can you swim at Kendwa at low tide?

Yes. Like Nungwi, Kendwa keeps deep clear water at low tide, so you can swim through the day. This sets the northwest coast apart from the east coast, where the sea retreats a long way at low water.

What are the Kendwa full moon parties?

Long running beach venues at Kendwa host large parties around the full moon roughly once a month, with music and dancing into the early hours. They are popular and crowded, so check the dates depending on whether you want to join or avoid them.

When is the best time to visit Kendwa?

The dry seasons from June to October and December to February bring the clearest water and best sunsets. The long rains from March to May are best avoided for a beach trip.

Are there beach clubs at Kendwa?

There are resorts and beach bars along the strip, but we do not invent venue names, prices or status. For verified daybed options and current spend bands, see the Zanzibar beach clubs directory.
