Kata Beach
Best for. Families and couples who want a calm, scenic beach in season, and surfers who come for the monsoon swell.
Best spot. Ska Bar on the rocks at the southern end for sunset, with Re Ka Ta at the Boathouse for a daybed and lunch.
Know this. Kata is calm and swimmable in the dry season but becomes a genuine surf beach with strong currents in the monsoon.
Kata is the beach that quietly does everything well. It is a tidy, palm backed crescent of white sand just south of Karon, smaller and prettier than its big neighbours, with a relaxed town behind that has restaurants and shops without the Patong roar. Families settle in easily, couples find it scenic, and there is just enough going on to keep a week interesting. If someone wants one Phuket beach that suits almost everyone, Kata is the safe and rewarding answer.
The honest thing to understand is that Kata has two seasons and they are very different. From November to April the sea is calm and the swimming is gentle and family friendly. From around May the southwest monsoon turns Kata into a genuine surf beach, with a swell that draws boards and a surf school, but also rip currents that catch out the unwary. The waves that make it fun for surfers are the same waves that put the red flags up, so the flags matter and should be obeyed.
Round the edges Kata has the details that lift a beach day. At the southern end Ska Bar is tucked into the rocks, a rustic, reggae tinged sunset bar that is one of the nicest places on the island to watch the light go. For a daybed and a longer lunch, Re Ka Ta at the Boathouse brings a smarter beach club setting with a pool. Come in the dry season for the easy swimming, or in the monsoon if you have come to surf, and either way stay for the sunset.
Clubs on this beach
Kata balances a smart beach club with a much loved sunset bar, alongside the usual lounger rentals. These are established venues on or beside the sand. Hours, entry policies and minimum spends are set by each and best confirmed before you go.

An iconic beachfront bar tucked into the rocks at the southern end of Kata, instantly recognisable by its rustic bamboo build and reggae feel. It is a favourite for sunset drinks and a laid back crowd rather than a daybed club. Hours are to be confirmed.
Beachfront lounger rentals
Along the sand, organised lounger and umbrella sets offer a simple base for the day without a club minimum, which is how many visitors enjoy Kata. Rental prices are set locally and to be confirmed, and shade fills up quickly in high season.
West coast, Phuket
Kata sits on the west coast of Phuket just south of Karon, around an hour by car from Phuket International Airport in the north depending on traffic. Most visitors arrive by metered taxi, a ride hailing app or a hotel transfer, and local songthaews connect Kata with Karon, Patong and Phuket Town.
The beach is backed by a compact, walkable town, so most hotels are a short stroll or quick ride from the sand. The roads around Kata are hilly, with a scenic viewpoint over Kata and Kata Noi on the way south, and the short hops to Karon and Patong are easy by car when the traffic is light.

Common questions about Kata Beach
Is Kata Beach good for families?
Yes, especially in the dry season from about November to April, when the water is calm and the beach is gentle and easy. It is smaller and more relaxed than Patong, with a walkable town behind. In the monsoon the surf and currents pick up, so families should watch the flags and swim only between them.
Can you surf at Kata Beach?
Yes. From around May to October the southwest monsoon brings a swell that makes Kata one of the better known surf beaches in Phuket, and a surf school runs in season. The same waves create rip currents, so respect the red flags and take a lesson if you are new to surfing.
What are the best bars and clubs at Kata Beach?
Ska Bar on the rocks at the southern end is the famous rustic sunset spot, while Re Ka Ta at the Boathouse is the smarter beach club with a pool and restaurant. Each sets its own hours and any minimum spend, so confirm with the venue before you go.
Is Kata better than Karon?
They are close and complementary. Kata is smaller, prettier and more of a self contained resort with a surf season, while Karon is longer, quieter and more spread out. Choose Kata for a compact, scenic base, and Karon if you want more space and a longer beach.
When is the best time to visit Kata Beach?
For calm swimming and reliable sun, come in the dry season from November to April. For surf, the monsoon months from around May to October bring the swell, along with rougher seas, more rain and lower prices.
