The best calm water beaches in the world

We judged the planet on one strict question: where does the sea actually stay flat and clear enough to swim, float and snorkel in peace. Here are the calmest beaches on Earth, ranked, each with the honest verdict and the single thing to know before you go.

The verdict

  • Who it is for. Anyone who wants to actually swim, float and snorkel in flat, clear water rather than fight a shorebreak or settle for a beach that only photographs well.
  • The pick. Blue Bay in Mauritius for the stillest, clearest water on Earth, with Grace Bay in Turks and Caicos a very close second for the same calm over far more sand.
  • The one thing to know. The most overrated calm water name, Anse Source d Argent in the Seychelles, is ankle deep and barely swimmable. For real calm water on those islands go to Anse Volbert or Anse Royale instead.
The brief

Why these made the list

A calm water ranking is easy to fake and hard to earn. Plenty of celebrated beaches look like glass in a single photograph taken at dawn and turn to chop by lunch. I weighted this list on the things that actually keep water still across the day and the season: a sheltering reef, a wrapping headland, an enclosed lagoon, and an aspect turned away from the prevailing wind. A beach that needs a perfect day to be calm ranks below one that is calm by design.

After calm came clarity and the swim itself. A flat puddle you can only wade in scores below a flat bay you can swim and snorkel across, which is why a famous shallow can finish behind a plainer beach with proper water. Where a beloved name is calm only on its best day I say so, and I name the quieter neighbour that beats it. The result is a list judged on the water, not on the postcard.

The ranking

The calmest water on Earth, in order

Ranked for water that stays flat and clear across the day, not for the single lucky photograph. Each pick links to its full guide.

The glassy protected lagoon and clear shallow water of Blue Bay in MauritiusPhoto: Jakub Syrovy via Google
Mahebourg, Mauritius

Blue Bay

Nothing else combines water this still with water this clear, which is why it takes the top spot ahead of more famous names. A protected marine park shelters a glassy lagoon over pale sand and live coral, so the snorkelling is as rewarding as the float. It earns first place over Grace Bay on sheer calm and clarity alone, giving up only the long ribbon of resort sand. Come on a weekday morning before the glass bottom boats churn the surface.

2
The calm turquoise water and powder sand of Grace Bay on ProvidencialesPhoto: Carlos Alberto do Amaral via Google
Providenciales, Turks and Caicos

Grace Bay

Twelve miles of powder sand behind a barrier reef that flattens the Atlantic to a pool, and the rare world famous beach that is genuinely as calm as the brochure. It sits a fraction below Blue Bay only because development crowds parts of it and the sheer scale dilutes the intimacy. For safe, warm, reliably flat swimming with snorkelling offshore it has almost no equal. Walk well away from the big resorts to find your own quiet, still stretch.

3
The flat turquoise water and offshore islets of Lanikai Beach on OahuPhoto: Young Dam via Google
Oahu, Hawaii

Lanikai

A reef holds the swell so far out that the water here lies almost flat, a sheet of pale turquoise over white sand with two islets to anchor the view. It ranks this high on water alone and would go higher but for its size and the residential streets with barely any parking. This is a swimmer and paddler beach, not a facilities beach, so bring everything and walk in. Early morning is both the calmest water and your only realistic parking.

The sheltered reef ringed cove and still water of Pongwe beach in ZanzibarPhoto: Pongwe Beach Hotel via Google
Zanzibar, Tanzania

Pongwe

A reef ringed cove on the east coast where the sea barely moves, the most sheltered swimming on an island better known for big tides. It places above its neighbours because the water stays usable and glassy when much of the coast empties out at low tide. The trade off is that timing matters, so check the tide chart and aim for the higher hours. For a still, quiet float with no jet ski noise it is hard to fault.

The shallow reef protected lagoon and casuarina shade of Trou aux Biches in MauritiusPhoto: Marc Chenut via Google
Mauritius

Trou aux Biches

The island most reliable family swim, a long shallow lagoon protected by reef where toddlers can wade and stronger swimmers can still snorkel out. It ranks just below Blue Bay because the water, while calm, is busier and a touch less pristine. What it gives up in seclusion it returns in shade, calm and easy access along its length. Sunset here is unusually good for a west facing calm water beach.

6
The broad calm bay and soft sand of Anse Volbert on Praslin in the SeychellesPhoto: Gaetane via Google
Praslin, Seychelles

Anse Volbert

Known locally as Cote d Or, this is the Seychelles beach for people who actually want to swim rather than wade and photograph. An offshore reef calms a broad bay of soft sand, so it beats the celebrated but ankle deep Anse Source d Argent for anyone who wants real water. It is the honest answer when someone asks where to swim on Praslin. Two small islands offshore make an easy calm paddle on a flat morning.

The still jewel coloured water of the Blue Lagoon at Oludeniz in TurkeyPhoto: HXYMXS via Google
Oludeniz, Turkey

Blue Lagoon

The still, jewel coloured lagoon behind the famous sandspit, where a sheltered basin holds water so flat it photographs like glass. It earns a place on calm alone, but drops to the middle of the list because it is a paid, busy nature park scene rather than a wild find. Come for the colour and the float, not for solitude. Arrive at opening or late afternoon to beat the paraglider landing crowds on the spit.

The millpond shallow water of Sapodilla Bay on ProvidencialesPhoto: NYC traveler via Google
Providenciales, Turks and Caicos

Sapodilla Bay

A south facing pocket so sheltered the water sits like a millpond, warm and barely knee deep a long way out. It is the calmest water on Provo and a brilliant toddler beach, which is exactly why it cannot rank higher, since it is more a wade than a swim. For absolute flat calm with no waves at all it is unmatched here. Low tide turns it into a shallow lagoon, so come on a higher tide if you want to float.

The protected crescent and calm snorkel water of Kapalua Bay on MauiPhoto: Jack Twait via Google
Maui, Hawaii

Kapalua Bay

Two rocky points wrap this crescent into one of Maui most protected swims, calm and clear enough that turtles and reef fish hang close to shore. It ranks above its showier neighbours because the headlands genuinely kill the swell most days. It is compact and can fill up, so the early slot rewards you with empty, glassy water. A rare Hawaiian beach where snorkelling straight off the sand is easy and safe in typical conditions.

The sheltered south facing bay and calm water of Ornos on MykonosPhoto: Sven Temming via Google
Mykonos, Greece

Ornos

When the meltemi wind flattens the north of Mykonos, this sheltered south facing bay stays calm, which is the whole point of it. It is the island most dependable family swim, and it ranks here as the best calm option on a famously windy island rather than as a world beater. Expect organised sunbeds and a built up backdrop, not wild nature. On a breezy day it is the smart move while the famous beaches get chopped up.

The long clear lagoon and shallow water of Belle Mare on the east coast of MauritiusPhoto: K T via Google
Mauritius

Belle Mare

A long east coast lagoon with water so shallow and clear you can read the sand from the shallows, calm for most of its considerable length. It sits mid table because the calm is real but wind and tide can stir the very edges on the breeziest days. For space and a quiet flat swim away from the busier west it is excellent. Early light over the lagoon is some of the best on the island.

The bright flat water and white sand of Tuerredda beach in southern SardiniaPhoto: Pierre Micallef Grimaud via Google
Sardinia, Italy

Tuerredda

A sheltered southern cove where bright tropical looking water lies flat over white sand, the calmest swimming on a coast better known for drama than stillness. It ranks here as the Mediterranean answer to a tropical lagoon, held back only by summer crowds that pack the small bay. Arrive early for a parking space and the clearest, calmest water. A little islet offshore makes a fine flat water swim for confident swimmers.

The reef calmed turtle bay and gentle shallows of Akumal in the Riviera MayaPhoto: Carlos Alberto do Amaral via Google
Riviera Maya, Mexico

Akumal

A reef calmed bay whose name means place of turtles, and they really do graze the seagrass in the shallows. It earns its spot for warm, protected water that rarely roughens, ranking above busier Riviera Maya strips on calm and snorkelling. Numbers and zones are now managed to protect the turtles, so follow the current rules and go early. For a gentle swim with a near guaranteed wildlife encounter it is the pick of this coast.

Barbados

Paynes Bay

The calm Caribbean west coast at its best, a sheltered strip of soft sand and clear, gentle water where turtles swim close in. It ranks above the island wilder Atlantic beaches, which are dramatic but no place for a relaxed swim. The west coast can get boat traffic, so swim inside the marked zones and go early for the stillest water. For an easy float and a turtle sighting it is the dependable choice.

The wide shallow flat water and sunset light of Lipa Noi on Koh SamuiPhoto: Gaelle Vincent via Google
Koh Samui, Thailand

Lipa Noi

A wide, shallow, west facing flat where the water stays calm and bath warm and the sunset does the rest. It ranks mid list as Samui best calm water beach, quieter and stiller than the busy east coast strips. The trade off is that it is shallow and plain rather than postcard pretty, so come for the swim and the sky, not the scene. Low tide walks out a long way, so a higher tide gives you a proper float.

The protected golden bay and calm Ionian water of Gerakas on ZakynthosPhoto: Mikael Boustedt via Google
Zakynthos, Greece

Gerakas

A protected golden bay on a turtle nesting coast, sheltered enough that the Ionian stays calm and clear along the sand. It ranks here for genuine calm with a conscience, since the beach closes at dusk and the back half is off limits to protect the nests. Respect the roped zones and the no umbrella rules on the sensitive sand. For a quiet, still swim with real wildlife stakes it is among the most rewarding in Greece.

The small curving bay and calm snorkel water of Napili Bay on MauiPhoto: Jack Twait via Google
Maui, Hawaii

Napili Bay

A small, curving bay just north of Kapalua, sheltered and calm enough for easy swimming and shore snorkelling on a typical day. It sits just below its larger neighbour because it is more exposed when a north swell runs and the sand can narrow. On a flat morning it is idyllic and far less hectic than the resort beaches. Check the surf report, since a winter swell can briefly turn its calm to shorebreak.

The reef calmed water and offshore islet of Anse Royale on MahePhoto: Christian Schmidt via Google
Mahe, Seychelles

Anse Royale

An offshore reef tames this long Mahe beach into one of the island better everyday swims, calm inside the reef line with a little islet to aim for. It ranks above the scenic but shallow icons for anyone who wants water they can actually swim in. Stay inside the reef, where the water is flat and clear, rather than venturing to the gap. A local favourite that rewards an early, quiet start.

The shallow sheltered bay and warm calm water of Almyrida in CretePhoto: Jason Revell via Google
Crete, Greece

Almyrida

A shallow, sheltered bay on the Apokoronas coast where the water stays flat and warm and a sandbar lets you wade a long way out. It earns its place as one of the calmest family swims in Crete, ranking above the island wilder, wind exposed beaches for sheer stillness. It is low key and built up rather than scenic, so come for the easy water, not the drama. A gentle entry makes it ideal for nervous swimmers and small children.

The long shaded crescent and calm lagoon of Mont Choisy in MauritiusPhoto: Tihomir Sarcevic via Google
Mauritius

Mont Choisy

The island longest crescent, a casuarina shaded lagoon that stays calm and shallow along most of its sweep. It ranks here for space and reliable calm rather than for seclusion, since locals love it at weekends. On a weekday morning it is a quiet, flat, shaded swim that is hard to better for value. The reef keeps the swell out, so the water rarely rises above a ripple.

Maafushi Bikini Beach

The designated swim beach on a local island, a calm lagoon strip where the water is warm, flat and brilliantly clear over white sand. It ranks as the calmest easy access swimming in the budget Maldives, held back only by its small size and the boat traffic of a working island. Respect the bikini beach boundary, which is what makes the relaxed swim possible here. For lagoon calm without a resort price it is the smart pick.

The quiet reef sheltered bay and calm water of Soliman Bay in the Riviera MayaPhoto: Federico via Google
Riviera Maya, Mexico

Soliman Bay

A quiet reef sheltered bay off the main road where the water stays calm and the crowds never really arrive. It ranks for seclusion as much as stillness, a calmer and far emptier alternative to the Tulum strip. There is little development and limited shade, so bring your own everything. For a still swim and a snorkel with almost nobody around it is a genuine find.

The sheltered northeast bay and tidal islet of Choeng Mon on Koh SamuiPhoto: Thawit Panyasuttakul via Google
Koh Samui, Thailand

Choeng Mon

A sheltered northeast bay where a headland and a tiny tidal islet keep the water calm and the mood gentle. It ranks above the brasher east coast beaches for families who want flat, safe water and a quieter setting. It is shallow and can go far out at low tide, so a higher tide gives the best swim. A calm, easygoing alternative to the Chaweng crowds a few minutes away.

The swimmable clear water and sunset light of Kendwa beach in ZanzibarPhoto: allanporai via Google
Zanzibar, Tanzania

Kendwa

The northwest corner of Zanzibar where the tide retreats far less than the rest of the island, so you can actually swim at any hour. It ranks here as the island most dependable swim rather than its calmest cove, since open water means a little more movement. For warm, clear, swimmable water without watching the tide chart it wins. Sunset off this beach is the best on Zanzibar.

The wide golden sand and shallow water of Tsambika bay on RhodesPhoto: Oksanderus via Google
Rhodes, Greece

Tsambika

A wide bay of soft golden sand below a hilltop monastery, with shallow, gently shelving water that stays calm in settled weather. It ranks for an easy family swim, though an honest note is due, since a strong meltemi can put a chop and a current on it, so it is a calm beach on a calm day. Pick a still morning and it is one of the most comfortable swims on the east coast. The shallow entry suits children and cautious swimmers.

The sheltered clear coves of Illetas near Palma in MallorcaPhoto: Balneario Illetas Beach Club via Google
Mallorca, Spain

Illetas

A pair of tiny sheltered coves close to Palma where the water sits clear and calm between low rocky points. It ranks for convenient, reliable calm rather than scale, a flat swim a short hop from the city. The coves are small and fill fast, so the early slot matters. For an easy, still dip with a beach club close at hand it does the job neatly.

The headland framed bay and clear water of Nai Harn in southern PhuketPhoto: Tsanko Zhelyazkov via Google
Phuket, Thailand

Nai Harn

A headland framed bay in the quieter south of Phuket that stays calm and swimmable through the high season, when much of the west coast turns to surf. It ranks here as the island most dependable calm water beach in season, with the clear caveat that the monsoon months bring swell and warning flags. Check the flags and swim between them. In the dry season it is a clean, flat, genuinely lovely swim.

Sri Lanka

Unawatuna

A horseshoe bay partly tamed by a reef and breakwater, the south coast most sheltered swimming and a reliable calm spot in the December to March season. It ranks mid list because the calm is engineered and the bay is busy and built up rather than pristine. The protected end nearest the rocks stays the flattest. For warm, swimmable water on a coast otherwise ruled by surf it is the dependable choice.

The wild dunes and shallow clear water of Es Trenc in MallorcaPhoto: Fabio Ferraz via Google
Mallorca, Spain

Es Trenc

The most natural beach in Mallorca, an undeveloped sweep of white sand and shallow, clear, usually calm water backed by dunes and pines. It ranks for that rare combination of calm and wildness, with the honest note that an onshore breeze can ruffle the open water. On a still day the shallows glow bright and clear. Go early or late, since the car park and the sand both fill in high summer.

The quiet reef sheltered bay and calm water of Tankah Bay near TulumPhoto: Amanda Ortenzi via Google
Tulum, Mexico

Tankah Bay

A quiet reef sheltered bay north of Tulum town where the water stays calm and a cenote feeds the shallows, far from the strip crowds. It ranks for stillness and seclusion, an honest alternative for anyone let down by the seaweed prone main beach at Tulum. Conditions vary with the sargassum season, so this is calm when the bay is clear. For a peaceful float with snorkelling close in it rewards the short drive.

The long open beach and gentle season water of Beau Vallon on MahePhoto: Liudmila Ianchuk via Google
Mahe, Seychelles

Beau Vallon

The most popular swimming beach on Mahe, a long sweep with no fringing reef, which is exactly why it ranks near the foot of this list. For much of the calm season the water is gentle and the swimming easy, but without a reef it picks up swell when the wind turns, so it is calm conditionally rather than always. Come in the settled months and check the water on the day. It earns its place for easy access and facilities, not for guaranteed stillness.

Thoddoo

A local island with a designated bikini beach on a calm, clear lagoon, a budget friendly slice of the still Maldivian water everyone pictures. It rounds out the list as genuinely calm but small and subject to seasonal shifts in the sandbar and current. Respect the swim beach boundary and check the local conditions. For lagoon calm without a resort it delivers the postcard at a fraction of the price.

How I ranked them, and how to find the calm

Two variables decide whether any of these beaches is actually calm on the day you stand on it: the hour and the wind. Most coasts are stillest just after sunrise and build a chop through the morning as the breeze fills in. The single best thing you can do at almost every beach on this list is to arrive early, when the water is flattest, the clearest, and the emptiest all at once.

The reef is the great divider. Beaches held by a fringing reef or a deep lagoon, such as Blue Bay, Grace Bay and Pongwe, stay calm on far more days than open beaches that rely on a kind forecast, such as Beau Vallon. Tide matters too, especially in the Indian Ocean and parts of Thailand, where a low tide can turn a swim into a long wade, so a higher tide usually gives you the proper float.

Several of the calmest beaches here are calm because they are protected, and that protection comes with rules. Blue Bay and Akumal limit how you move through the water to spare the coral and the turtles, Gerakas closes at dusk for nesting, and the Maldivian local islands ask you to keep to the marked bikini beach. Conditions are typical rather than guaranteed, no beach is ever a promise of safe swimming, so read the local flags, mind any current, and tread lightly so these stay as still and clear as they are.

Questions, answered

Common questions

What makes a beach calm water?

Calm comes from shelter. A fringing reef, a wrapping headland, an enclosed lagoon, or an aspect that faces away from the prevailing wind all flatten the swell before it reaches the sand. The beaches near the top of this list combine more than one of those, which is why their water stays still on more days of the year.

What is the calmest water beach in the world?

For the stillest, clearest water we rank Blue Bay in Mauritius first, a protected marine park lagoon that barely ripples on a settled morning. Grace Bay in Turks and Caicos is a very close second, calmer over far more sand thanks to its barrier reef. Both are genuinely flat in typical conditions rather than calm only on a lucky day.

Are calm water beaches better for families and children?

Generally yes. Flat, shallow, gently shelving water with no shorebreak is far safer and less intimidating for small children and nervous swimmers. Beaches like Sapodilla Bay, Trou aux Biches and Almyrida are on this list precisely because you can wade out a long way in still, warm water, though you should still supervise children and follow any local flags.

Which famous calm beaches are overrated?

Anse Source d Argent in the Seychelles is sold as a tranquil dream, and it is beautiful, but the water is ankle deep and barely swimmable, so it flatters the camera more than the swimmer. If you want genuinely calm water you can swim in on those islands, go to Anse Volbert or Anse Royale instead. The honest rule is to separate a photogenic shallow from a proper calm swim.

When is calm water most reliable?

Early in the day and in the settled season. Wind builds through the morning at most coasts, so the flattest, clearest water is usually just after sunrise. Reef and lagoon beaches hold their calm best, while open beaches without a reef, such as Beau Vallon, depend more on the season and the day, so always check the local wind and tide before you commit.

Do calm water beaches have good snorkelling?

Often the very best, because the same reef that flattens the swell also hosts the marine life. Blue Bay, Kapalua Bay, Akumal and Soliman Bay all pair still water with snorkelling straight off the sand in typical conditions. A calm surface also means better visibility, so the two pleasures tend to arrive together.
