The verdict

Best for. Families and calm water swimmers who want the beauty of the windward coast with the parking, shade and lifeguards that Lanikai lacks.

Best spot. Kailua Beach Park at the south end, where the parking, facilities and lifeguard towers are, with the prettiest water toward Lanikai.

Know this. This is the practical windward beach, longer and better equipped than Lanikai, and the easier choice for a full, comfortable day with kids.

The honest read

Kailua is the windward coast done sensibly. Where Lanikai next door is the photogenic but awkward darling, Kailua is the long, broad, beautifully equipped beach that most people should actually plan their day around. Two and a half miles of soft white sand front the same dreamy turquoise water, but here there is a proper park behind it, with parking, restrooms, showers and lifeguards.

The honest read is that Kailua gives you ninety percent of the Lanikai dream with none of the parking grief. The water is reef sheltered, clear and usually calm, the sand is deep and forgiving, and the offshore islands and headlands frame the view. It is one of the best family beaches on Oahu precisely because it is comfortable: you can park, unload, find shade, use a restroom and watch the kids in calm water with a lifeguard on duty.

It is also the launch point for the windward coast's water sports. Kayaks and stand up paddleboards set off from the south end toward the Mokulua and Flat Island, and the steady trade winds make the bay a long standing kitesurfing and windsurfing spot, with conditions varying by the day. Rentals and schools operate from Kailua town just back from the sand.

Crowds gather at the south end by the park, where the parking and facilities are, and thin out as you walk north along the long beach. For a quieter towel, walk away from the Beach Park hub; for the prettiest water and the classic island view, drift south toward the Lanikai end. The town behind has grown into a busy weekend destination, so mornings are calmer than afternoons.

Who should skip it. Almost no one, which is the point, though surfers chasing big waves will find the windward water too gentle and should head to the North Shore in winter. For everyone wanting calm, beautiful, comfortable Hawaiian water, Kailua is the easy yes on this coast.

Clubs on this beach

Kailua is a public beach park with no club on the sand, so we point you to where a serviced club day actually exists on Oahu.

This is public Hawaiian sand with no daybed club on the beach itself. For a club style day with loungers and table service on Oahu you book at the Waikiki and Ko Olina resort beaches, which we gather in the Oahu beach clubs directory.

Windward Coast, Oahu

Kailua sits on the windward coast, about a twenty five to thirty five minute drive from Waikiki over the Pali or Likelike highway. Kailua Beach Park at the south end has a proper parking lot, which fills on sunny weekends, so an earlier start helps.

The park has restrooms, showers, picnic areas and shade, and the town just back from the sand has food, coffee and kayak rentals. It is one of the easier beaches on Oahu to spend a full, comfortable day at.

Bring reef safe sunscreen and water, and if you plan to kayak to the islands, go only on a calm day and check the current rules for landing, since one of the Mokulua islands is a protected sanctuary.

Common questions about Kailua Beach

Is Kailua Beach good for families?

Yes. Kailua is one of the best family beaches on Oahu because it pairs calm, reef sheltered turquoise water with a proper park behind it, including parking, restrooms, showers, shade and lifeguards. The sand is wide and soft, so there is plenty of room to spread out with children.

What is the difference between Kailua and Lanikai?

They share the same beautiful windward water. Kailua is much longer and has a full beach park with parking, restrooms and lifeguards, while Lanikai is smaller, more photogenic and has no facilities or car park. Many visitors base at Kailua and walk south to Lanikai for the view.

Is there parking at Kailua Beach?

Yes. Kailua Beach Park at the south end has a parking lot, unlike neighbouring Lanikai. It fills on sunny weekends and in the afternoon, so arriving earlier in the day gives you the best chance of a space and the calmest water.

Can you kayak from Kailua Beach?

Yes. Kailua is a popular launch for kayaks and paddleboards heading to the Mokulua islands and Flat Island on calm days, with rentals in Kailua town. Go only in settled conditions, watch the wind, and check the current landing rules, since one Mokulua island is a protected seabird sanctuary.

Is Kailua Beach good for swimming?

Kailua is reef sheltered and usually calm, which makes it good for swimming much of the year, with lifeguards on the main beach. Trade winds can pick up in the afternoon and a swell can lift the water on some days, so check the flags and treat the calm as typical rather than guaranteed.
