Almyrida Beach
Best for. Families with young children and anyone who wants calm, shallow water with sunbeds and tavernas a step away.
Best spot. The sheltered main bay in front of the village for easy shallow swimming and quick access to food.
Know this. The shallow calm water is the draw, but the same breeze that suits windsurfers can ripple the bay later in the day.
Almyrida is the gentle one. Set in a sheltered bay on the green Apokoronas coast east of Chania, it has the shallow, calm, slowly shelving water that makes parents exhale, with tavernas, shops and sunbeds lined up just behind the sand. It is a small resort village rather than a wild beach, and that is exactly the point. You can paddle with a toddler, swim out to clear blue and order lunch without crossing a road, which is a rare and welcome thing.
The same sheltered setting that keeps the water calm also brings a steady afternoon breeze across the bay, and Almyrida has long been a friendly spot for windsurfing and other watersports because of it. That gives the beach two gears, a gentle morning for easy family swimming and a livelier afternoon for anyone who wants to get out on the water. A short walk west leads to the neighbouring beach at Kalyves, and the quiet villages of Apokoronas sit just inland for an easy change of scene.
The honest notes are small. There are patches of seagrass and some fine shingle, so water shoes are handy, and in peak summer the compact bay and its parking get busy by midday. None of it undercuts the appeal. For calm, shallow, well served swimming on the north coast, with a relaxed village around it, Almyrida is one of the easiest and most reassuring choices in this part of Crete, and a good base for exploring the green Apokoronas hinterland.
Clubs on this beach
Almyrida is a village beach with tavernas, sunbeds and watersports rather than a single named beach club. The seasonal sunbeds and the bars behind them are the closest thing to a club here. Names and hours change year to year, so confirm before you travel, and use the Crete beach clubs guide for the wider island picture.
Seasonal beach bar and sunbeds
Sunbeds, umbrellas and bars along the village front, with seasonal watersports nearby. Operators to be confirmed.
North coast, Crete
Almyrida sits on the Apokoronas coast east of Chania, reached on a short drive off the main north coast highway through green rolling country. From Chania the drive is around thirty minutes, and from Chania airport a little less, with parking near the village front, which fills quickly in summer.
Buses run from Chania toward the Apokoronas villages in season, which makes Almyrida reachable without a car, though a car helps for exploring the quiet villages inland. In the village itself the beach, the tavernas and the shops all sit close together along the front.

Common questions about Almyrida
Is Almyrida good for young children?
Yes, it is one of the gentler north coast beaches for families. The water is shallow and calm and shelves slowly, and sunbeds, shade and tavernas are right behind the sand. Water shoes help with the patches of shingle and seagrass, and there is no guaranteed lifeguard, so always supervise children in the sea.
Can you windsurf at Almyrida?
Yes. The sheltered bay catches a steady afternoon breeze, and Almyrida has long been a friendly spot for windsurfing and other watersports, with seasonal operators on the front. The mornings stay calmer for family swimming, so the same beach works for both, depending on the time of day.
Are there sunbeds and tavernas at Almyrida?
Yes. The organised central section has seasonal sunbeds and umbrellas, and tavernas, bars and shops line the village front, so everything is within a short walk. Operator names, prices and opening times change from year to year and are best confirmed locally before you visit.
Does Almyrida get busy?
In peak summer it can. The bay is compact and popular with families, so it and its parking fill by the middle of the day in July and August. Arriving earlier, or visiting in late spring or September, gives you a calmer beach and an easier time finding a space.
What is near Almyrida?
The neighbouring beach at Kalyves is a short walk to the west, and the quiet green villages of the Apokoronas region sit just inland, good for a slower day away from the sand. The long beach at Georgioupoli and the city of Chania are both an easy drive away.
