If one Mallorcan beach is built for a family holiday, it is Playa de Muro. It forms part of the long sweep of the Bay of Alcudia on the north coast, and its defining feature is the water: shallow, warm and calm for a remarkable distance out, so children can paddle and play far from the drop off. The sand is soft and pale, the kind that squeaks underfoot, and in the better sectors it is backed by protected dunes and the pines of the S'Albufera wetland behind, which keeps the whole stretch feeling natural rather than built up.
Length is the other gift here. The beach runs for miles and divides loosely into sectors, so even on a busy day you can walk away from the cafes and find quieter sand. The southern and central sectors, near the dunes, are the prettiest and calmest, while the end toward Alcudia and Port d'Alcudia is livelier and better served. Watersports operate in season, the swimming is reassuring, and the nature reserve at your back makes for an easy morning of birdlife if the beach palls, which it rarely does.
Who it suits is obvious: families, couples and anyone who rates a long, safe feeling swim and natural surroundings over glamour. The one honest caveat is popularity, because Playa de Muro's reputation is well earned and August is busy. Who should skip it is the traveller hunting a dramatic cove or a party scene, since this is a calm, wholesome, wide open beach. Come in June or September, or arrive early in summer, and it is hard to fault.

Playa de Muro mixes simple sunbed concessions with one proper beach club, Ponderosa Beach, tucked into the dunes. For the island's wider club scene, see our Mallorca beach clubs directory.
A long running beach club and restaurant set among the dunes near the Casetes des Capellans, with daybeds, food and music through the day. A relaxed rather than flashy scene. Minimum spend and booking terms to be confirmed.
Playa de Muro sits on the Bay of Alcudia in the north of the island, around 50 minutes to an hour by car from Palma airport. Buses connect it with Alcudia, Can Picafort and Palma in season, and the beach is an easy add on to a visit to the S'Albufera nature reserve behind it.
Drivers will find car parks and roadside spaces behind the different sectors; these fill early in August, so come in the morning. Bring sun cream, water and shade, plus a little cash for the beach bars and sunbed hire along the front.

Because of the water. It is shallow, warm and calm for a long distance out, so children can play far from the drop off, and the sand is soft and white. Add protected dunes and a nature reserve behind, and it becomes one of the island's most reassuring family beaches.
For the prettiest, calmest sand, head to the southern and central sectors near the dunes. The end toward Alcudia and Port d'Alcudia is livelier with more cafes and facilities. Both are good; pick by whether you want quiet or convenience.
The water is famously shallow and gentle a long way out, which is exactly why families love it. That said, conditions are only ever typical rather than guaranteed, so always follow the daily lifeguard flags and keep young swimmers in sight.

May, June and September give you warm, shallow water with more room than the August peak. Because the beach is deservedly popular, an early start in high summer is the surest way to find both parking and a calmer patch of sand.
