Amadores is the south west's answer to a perfect family swim. A purpose built bay of imported golden sand, sheltered behind breakwaters just along the coast from Puerto Rico, it was created to offer calm, clear water and an easy beach day, and it does exactly that. The sand is soft and groomed, the bay is protected from swell, and a tidy promenade of restaurants curves around the back. It is comfort over wildness, and unapologetic about it.
The honest read is that Amadores is a resort beach through and through, man made and manicured, so anyone hunting for natural character should look to Maspalomas or the wilder north instead. What it does brilliantly is calm, safe, sheltered swimming, which makes it one of the best beaches on the island for young families and nervous swimmers. The water is genuinely clear and gentle, and the curve of golden sand is genuinely pretty in the southern sun.
Above the beach sits the Amadores Beach Club, the island's best known, with pools, Balinese beds, a solarium and a champagne terrace looking over the bay. It suits families by day and a smarter crowd for sunset. Skip Amadores if you want space and nature, but for an easy, calm, good looking beach day with everything to hand it is hard to beat in the south. Go in the shoulder months to avoid the busiest weeks.
Amadores is home to the island's best known beach club above the sand, with more options a short walk or drive away. Compare them all in our Gran Canaria beach clubs directory.
The island's best known beach club sits above the bay, with pools, Balinese beds, a solarium and a champagne terrace over the sand. Polished and relaxed rather than a party. Days and any minimum spend are to be confirmed when you book.
A short walk or drive away, Puerto Rico has a newer Chester beach club and Anfi del Mar has the Maroa terrace club by the marina. Operators and minimum spend vary by season and are to be confirmed.
Amadores sits on the south west coast of Gran Canaria, just along from Puerto Rico and around 40 minutes by car from Las Palmas airport via the southern motorway. It is well served by buses and taxis from the southern resorts, and a coastal path connects it to Puerto Rico for an easy walk between the two bays.
Parking sits above the beach and fills in peak season, so arrive early or use the bus. The walk down to the sand involves some steps and slopes, so allow time with young children or buggies. Bring sun cover, and decide between a free patch of public sand, a hired sunbed, or a day at the beach club above.

Yes. Amadores is a purpose built bay created with imported golden sand and sheltered behind breakwaters to give calm, clear water. That design is exactly why it is so good for easy, safe swimming, even if it lacks the natural character of beaches like Maspalomas.
Very. The sheltered bay keeps the water calm and clear, the sand is soft and groomed, and there are seasonal lifeguards, sunbed hire and restaurants along the promenade. It is one of the best beaches in the south for young children and nervous swimmers.
Swimming in the calm bay is the main draw, along with sunbathing on the groomed sand, eating along the promenade, and a day at the Amadores Beach Club above the beach. A coastal path also links it to Puerto Rico for an easy walk between the two.
A coastal path connects the two bays, a pleasant walk of around 20 minutes with sea views, and taxis and buses run the short distance too. Many visitors stay in Puerto Rico and walk over to Amadores for the calmer, prettier swim.
April, May and October bring warm, settled weather and lighter crowds than the busy summer. The sheltered bay is calm for swimming most of the year, and mornings are the quietest time before the sunbeds and the beach club fill up.
