The verdict

Best for. Families and walkers who want a very long sandy beach with a relaxed village, sunbeds and easy access.

Best spot. The organised sand by the village and the little chapel on the rocks, with quieter open sand stretching east.

Know this. This is an open north coast beach, so it can have waves and a drop offshore, which calls for care with children.

The honest read

Georgioupoli is where Crete shows off its sense of scale. From the small resort village a band of pale sand runs east for several kilometres, one of the longest continuous beaches on the island, so however busy the village end gets you can always walk to space. A river meets the sea here, lined with eucalyptus and home to ducks and terrapins, and a tiny chapel sits out on the rocks reached by a narrow causeway, which has become the postcard image of the place.

The village end is the easy end, with organised sunbeds, tavernas, bars and shops a few steps from the sand, which makes Georgioupoli a comfortable family base. Walk east and the development falls away quickly, leaving long open sand backed by dunes and greenery where you can lay a towel in near solitude even in summer. That contrast, a serviced resort beach and a wild long beach in one, is the real appeal, and it rewards anyone willing to wander.

The honest caveat is that this is an open north coast beach, not a sheltered cove. When the wind is up it can carry waves and a noticeable pull, and the sand can shelve away offshore, so it asks for sensible care with young children and weaker swimmers. On calm days it is gentle and broad and lovely. Watch the conditions, keep little ones in the shallows near the organised sections, and Georgioupoli gives you space and ease that few beaches on the island can match.

The club layer

Clubs on this beach

Georgioupoli is a long resort beach with tavernas and bars rather than a single named beach club. Seasonal sunbeds and umbrellas run the sections near the village, and the bars behind them are the closest thing to a club here. Names and hours change year to year, so confirm before you travel, and use the Crete beach clubs guide for the wider island.

North coast, Crete

Georgioupoli sits on the north coast between Chania and Rethymno, just off the main coastal highway, which makes it one of the easiest beaches on the island to reach. From Chania airport the drive is around forty minutes, and from Rethymno town around twenty five, with parking near the village and along the access points to the eastern sand.

Buses running the north coast between Chania and Rethymno stop near Georgioupoli, so it is reachable without a car, though a car helps if you want to explore the long open beach to the east. In the village everything sits close to the sand, with the chapel and the river mouth a short walk apart.

Common questions about Georgioupoli

Is Georgioupoli beach good for families?

Generally yes. The sand is very long and broad, the village end has sunbeds, shade and tavernas close by, and there is plenty of room. Because it is an open beach it can have waves and a drop offshore when the wind blows, so keep younger children in the shallows and pick the calmer organised sections.

What is the chapel on the rocks at Georgioupoli?

It is the small chapel of Agios Nikolaos, set on rocks just offshore and reached by a narrow stone causeway from the beach. It is the most photographed sight in Georgioupoli, especially in soft morning or evening light, though the causeway can be slippery and is best avoided in rough seas.

Can Georgioupoli beach be rough?

It can. This is an open north coast beach, so when the wind is up it can carry waves and a noticeable pull, and the sand can shelve away offshore. On calm settled days it is gentle and broad. Always check the conditions and treat the sea as unsupervised.

How long is the beach at Georgioupoli?

It runs for several kilometres east of the village, making it one of the longest beaches in Crete. The village end is organised and busier, while a short walk east takes you to wide, wild, undeveloped sand where you can find quiet even in high summer.

When is the best time to visit Georgioupoli?

Late May, June or September for warm water, long evenings and lighter crowds. On any visit, calmer mornings tend to give the gentlest swimming, and softer light at either end of the day is best for the walk out to the chapel on the rocks.
