The Algarve is southern Portugal's holiday coast, a run of golden cliffs, hidden coves and long Atlantic beaches stretching from the Spanish border west to the wild headland at Sagres. It is one of Europe's most reliable summer beach regions, with warm sun, dramatic ochre rock formations and water that runs clear and a touch cooler than the Mediterranean. The trade off is popularity, as the prettiest coves are small and can feel crowded in July and August.

The honest read is that the Algarve rewards a little planning. The cliff coves around Lagos and Carvoeiro are the postcards, but they are compact, so timing matters more than choosing the right one. For space you head to the broad sands at Falesia and Meia Praia or out to the sandbar islands of the Ria Formosa, and for a wilder, surf flavoured day you cross to the west coast. Below we rank the beaches on sand, water, scenery and the kind of day each delivers.

The ranking

Scored on the sand, the water, the crowd and how easy the day is. Honest verdicts, the overrated called out.

1
Central Algarve

Praia da Marinha

The poster beach of the Algarve, a small golden cove framed by ochre cliffs and clear water above the Seven Hanging Valleys trail. Stunning from the clifftop, busy on the sand in summer, so arrive early.

2
Lagos

Praia do Camilo

A pretty pocket cove reached by a long wooden staircase, with rock arches, caves and turquoise water. Small and beloved, it fills fast, so come at opening or late afternoon.

3
Carvoeiro

Benagil

Home to the famous sea cave with its eye to the sky, best seen from a kayak or boat rather than the tiny beach itself. The cave is the draw, the sand is an afterthought.

4
Lagos

Dona Ana

One of the Algarve's most photogenic beaches, a broad sweep of sand between sculpted cliffs and rock stacks near Lagos. More space than the Lagos coves, with calm, clear water.

5
Albufeira

Falesia

A vast stretch of golden sand running for miles below dramatic red and ochre cliffs. The space absorbs the crowds, which makes it the pick for a long, easy beach day near the resorts.

6
Ria Formosa

Ilha Deserta

A wild sandbar island off Faro with nothing but dunes, clean water and a single restaurant, reached by ferry. The escape for anyone who finds the cliff coves too busy.

7
West Coast

Odeceixe

A river mouth beach on the wilder west coast where surf meets a calm lagoon, backed by green hills. Cooler, breezier and far less developed than the south, and a favourite with surfers.

8
Portimao

Praia da Rocha

The big, lively town beach at Portimao, wide and golden with a long promenade, bars and the coast's main beach club scene. Comes for energy and facilities rather than seclusion.

Who it suits, who should skip

Who should skip what? If you want a quiet, secluded cove in peak summer, the famous spots like Praia da Marinha and Praia do Camilo will test your patience by midday, and you are better at a long beach such as Falesia or out on Ilha Deserta. If you want surf, cooler air and room to breathe, the west coast at Odeceixe and Bordeira suits you far more than the busy south. The classic mistake is arriving at a tiny cove at noon in August and blaming the beach.

Logistics are straightforward, which is part of the appeal. The central Algarve around Lagos, Carvoeiro and Albufeira has the highest concentration of scenic coves and the best transport, while the eastern Ria Formosa needs a short ferry and the west coast needs a car. Match the beach to the day, the cliff coves early for the scenery, the long sands and islands for space, and the west for the surf.

When to go

The best months in Algarve

The Algarve has a long, dependable beach season. July and August bring the hottest days, the warmest water and the heaviest crowds and prices, while June and September are the sweet spot, with hot sun, pleasant sea and noticeably more room. May and October stay warm enough for the beach on bright days and are far quieter, and even winter is mild, though the Atlantic is too cool for comfortable swimming outside the warmer half of the year.

All Algarve beach clubs

The beaches feed the clubs, and in the Algarve the scene is gentler and more scattered than in Spain or the islands. The names to know first are NoSoloAgua at Praia da Rocha and Falesia for the day party energy, WELL Beach Club above Vale do Lobo for a pool lounge, and the relaxed beach restaurants around Quinta do Lago. Each beach above points you toward nearby venues, and our full directory compares every club by beach and vibe, with any minimum spend confirmed when you enquire.

Good questions

Before you go

Which is the best beach in the Algarve?

For classic Algarve scenery Praia da Marinha and the Lagos coves of Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo lead, with their ochre cliffs and clear water. For space you want Falesia or the Ria Formosa islands, and for surf the west coast at Odeceixe. The best choice depends on whether you want the postcard cliffs, room to spread out or waves.

Are the Algarve beaches crowded?

The famous cliff coves are small and do get busy in July and August, often full by late morning. The long beaches such as Falesia and Meia Praia absorb crowds far better, and the sandbar islands of the Ria Formosa stay quiet. Arrive early or late at the coves and you will still find the Algarve at its best.

Is the sea warm in the Algarve?

The Algarve faces the Atlantic, so the water is clear but cooler than the Mediterranean, most comfortable from roughly June to September. The eastern beaches near the Spanish border tend to feel a touch warmer than the exposed west coast, where the surf and cooler water draw a different crowd.

Where are the best beach clubs in the Algarve?

The main scene sits around Portimao and Praia da Rocha with NoSoloAgua, with WELL Beach Club above Vale do Lobo and relaxed beach restaurants around Quinta do Lago. The Algarve club scene is smaller and more laid back than Spain or the islands, so it suits a long lunch and a sunset more than an all day party.

When is the best time to visit the Algarve?

June and September give you hot days and warm enough water without the full peak of July and August. May and October are quieter and pleasant on bright days, ideal for the coastal walks and the cliff coves. The shoulder months are the easiest time to enjoy the famous beaches before they fill.
