Benagil is a tiny fishing cove that became one of the most famous places on the Algarve coast for a single reason, the sea cave next door. The Algar de Benagil is a vast domed chamber with a circular opening in its roof, a natural skylight that pours sunshine onto a hidden crescent of sand. The cove itself is small and the village above it modest, but the cave has turned Benagil into a bucket list stop.
The crucial thing to understand is that you reach the cave only from the water. Walking in is not possible, and to protect both visitors and the cave, access by sea has been managed and at times restricted, so the rules can change from season to season. The usual way in is by kayak, paddleboard or a guided boat tour, almost all of which leave early to catch the calmest water and the best light through the roof opening.
It suits visitors who want a short, memorable adventure on the water rather than a long lazy beach day. The honest caveat is that the beach is tiny and gets packed, parking is very limited, and the cave can be crowded with kayaks by mid morning. Book a kayak, paddleboard or boat trip for early in the day, treat the cove as a launch point rather than a base, and do not count on swimming into the cave, as conditions and rules are to be confirmed locally. June, September and October offer the warmest, settled sea for the trip.
Benagil is a small village cove with no beach club, just restaurants above the sand and water tour operators. The Algarve sunbed and beach bar scene is in our Algarve beach clubs directory.
Benagil is a small village cove with no beach club, only restaurants above the beach and seasonal kayak, paddleboard and boat operators on the sand. For sunbeds and full service, the larger resort beaches nearby are a short drive. Details are to be confirmed before you visit.
Local operators on the beach run kayak, paddleboard and boat trips to the Benagil cave, the real highlight here. Routes, rules and prices vary by season and conditions and are to be confirmed.
Benagil sits in the Lagoa area between Carvoeiro and Praia da Marinha, around 45 minutes by car west of Faro airport. There is no public transport to the cove, so a car, a taxi or an organised tour from a nearby resort is the practical way in.
Parking in the small village is very limited and fills early in summer, so arrive soon after sunrise or book a tour that handles transport. Bring water, sun cream and shade, and book any kayak, paddleboard or boat trip ahead in peak season as slots sell out.
Benagil itself has no beach club, but tell us your date and party and we will point you to sunbeds and clubs nearby in the Algarve and pass on your request. No charge to enquire.

Most visitors take a kayak, paddleboard or boat tour from Benagil beach or a nearby resort, usually early in the day for the calmest water and best light. Book ahead in peak season, as slots sell out and parking is very limited.
Yes, mainly for the cave. The beach itself is tiny and gets packed, so the highlight is the trip out on the water to the famous sea cave. Treat the cove as a launch point for a kayak, paddleboard or boat adventure rather than an all day base.
Conditions in and around the cave change with the sea and the season, and access has been managed and at times restricted. We make no safety promises; follow local rules and operator guidance and treat the cave as a managed, conditions dependent visit.
June, September and October bring warm, settled sea ideal for the cave trip, without the August crush. Early mornings are calmest and best for light in the cave, and parking is easiest soon after sunrise.
