Praia da Marinha is the beach that launched a thousand Algarve postcards, and in person it lives up to the hype. Set below tall ochre cliffs near Carvoeiro and Benagil in the Lagoa area, it is famous for the twin rock arches just offshore that form a near perfect double window when seen from the cliff path above. The water is the clear, cool Atlantic, and the whole scene has a sculpted, almost unreal quality.
Getting down is part of the deal. A long stairway drops from the clifftop car park to the sand, which keeps the crowds honest and rewards anyone who makes the effort with a beach far more beautiful than most. The famous Seven Hanging Valleys coastal walk runs along the clifftops here, and the views from the path above are arguably even better than from the sand itself.
It suits walkers, photographers and confident swimmers who want the definitive Algarve cliff beach and are happy to trade comfort for scenery. The honest caveat is real. The stairs are steep, parking fills early, facilities are minimal, and the beach gets busy by midday as tour boats arrive from Benagil. Go early, bring water and shade, and walk a stretch of the clifftop trail while you are there. For sheer Algarve drama, Praia da Marinha is hard to beat. June, September and October bring the best balance of warm sea and softer light.

For sunbeds and beach bar service, the resort beaches around Carvoeiro are a short drive west and far easier to access. Operators and prices vary by season and are to be confirmed.
Praia da Marinha lies in the Lagoa area between Carvoeiro and Benagil, around 45 minutes by car west of Faro airport. There is no public transport to the beach itself, so a car or a taxi to the clifftop car park is the practical way in.
Parking at the top fills early in summer, so arrive soon after the gates open on busy days. From the car park a long stairway leads down to the sand. Bring water, food, shade and proper shoes, as facilities are limited and there is little natural shade on the beach.
Praia da Marinha itself has no beach club, but tell us your date and party and we will point you to sunbeds and clubs nearby in the Algarve and pass on your request. No charge to enquire.
Praia da Marinha is famous for its twin rock arches and golden cliffs, often ranked among the most beautiful beaches in Portugal and Europe. The clear water and sculpted rock formations make it one of the most photographed spots on the whole Algarve coast.
A long stairway leads from the clifftop car park down to the sand. It is steep, so wear proper shoes and allow time, especially in the heat. The effort keeps the beach quieter than the drive up beaches nearby.
Yes, for the scenery. Arrive early to beat the heat, the parking crush and the midday tour boats, and walk a stretch of the clifftop Seven Hanging Valleys trail while you are there. The views from the path are as good as the beach.
Only a seasonal kiosk and toilets at the top when open. There is no permanent sunbed concession to rely on and little natural shade, so bring water, food and a parasol, and treat it as a half day trip rather than an all day base.
June, September and October bring warm, settled sea and softer light without the August peak. Early mornings are calmest and clearest for swimming and best for photographs before the tour boats arrive.
