Praia Dona Ana is the image many people carry of the Algarve, a sheltered curve of golden sand below tall ochre cliffs, with weathered rock stacks standing in clear water just offshore. It sits a short way south of Lagos and has long been one of the most photographed beaches on this coast, helped by the easy walk down and the postcard view from the clifftop above.
There is one honest thing to know. A sand replenishment scheme widened Dona Ana some years ago, and the beach you find today is larger and flatter than the narrow, rocky cove in older photographs. Most visitors prefer the extra room, but if you arrive expecting the tiny secret cove from a decade old picture, the reality is a bigger, busier and more comfortable beach.
It suits a proper day out rather than a quick stop. There is space to spread out, a restaurant and bar on the sand, clear sheltered water for swimming and snorkelling around the stacks, and a short walk south brings you to Praia do Camilo and the Ponta da Piedade cliffs. Come in June, September or early October for warm water without the August crush, and arrive in the morning for the easiest parking.
Dona Ana has a beach restaurant and seasonal sunbeds rather than a full beach club. For dedicated club beds and bars, see our Algarve beach clubs directory.
Dona Ana has a restaurant and bar on the sand with seasonal sunbed and umbrella hire, enough for a comfortable full day, but it is not a full beach club with day beds and music. Opening times and prices are to be confirmed.
There is no large beach club on Dona Ana itself; the sand is public with seasonal hire. For full service clubs and beach bars, the wider Lagos and Portimao beaches are a short drive. Details are to be confirmed before you visit.
Praia Dona Ana lies about two kilometres south of Lagos centre, an easy drive, taxi or walk from town. Steps and a ramp lead down from the clifftop car park, making it one of the more accessible of the Lagos cliff beaches.
Parking above the beach fills in peak summer, so arrive in the morning or walk in from Lagos along the clifftop path. Bring sun cream and water, and pair the visit with a short walk south to Praia do Camilo and the Ponta da Piedade viewpoints.
Dona Ana has sunbeds and a restaurant but no full club, so tell us your date and party and we will point you to clubs and beds nearby in Lagos. No charge to enquire.
A sand replenishment scheme widened the beach some years ago, adding volume to what was once a narrow, rocky cove. The result is a larger, flatter and more comfortable beach, so older pictures of a tiny secret cove no longer match what you find today.
Yes, the water is usually clear and sheltered by the rock stacks offshore, which keeps it calmer than the open coast. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed, so follow any lifeguard guidance, but on settled days it is fine for swimming and snorkelling.
Steps and a ramp lead down from the clifftop car park, making Dona Ana easier to reach than several of the narrow Lagos coves. It is about two kilometres south of Lagos centre, a short drive, taxi or clifftop walk from town.
There is a car park above the beach, but it fills in peak summer. Arrive in the morning, or walk in from Lagos along the clifftop path, as roadside space nearby is limited in July and August.
June, September and early October offer warm, settled water with more room on the sand than August. Mornings are best for parking and calm water, before day trippers arrive from Lagos and the resorts nearby.
