When to go to the Algarve

A month by month read on weather, sea temperature and crowds, so you choose the right week for the beach you want.

The Algarve has one of the longest beach seasons in Europe, but the sea and the crowds do not move in step, and that gap is the key to timing a trip well. The sun arrives early and the air can be hot from June, yet the Atlantic warms slowly and is at its most comfortable for swimming in late summer and early autumn. The crowds, meanwhile, peak hard in August, when prices and beach density are at their highest.

We have set out the year below as a season grid and then as notes on the months that earn their place, so you can match your priorities to the calendar. If warm sea is what you want, look to August and September. If you want sun and space at a gentler price, the shoulder months of May, June and September are the sweet spot. If you want the coast almost to yourself, the cooler edges of the year deliver quiet beaches and dramatic light.

If you take one line from this page, take this one. For the best balance of warm sea, long sun and a bearable crowd, aim for the second half of June or for September, treat July and August as hot, busy and best booked early, and use spring and autumn for quiet beaches and bracing but rewarding swims.

The notable months

When each month earns its place

May. One of the finest months on the coast. The air is reliably warm without the high summer heat, the days are long, and the beaches are open and well serviced but far from full. The sea is still cool at around 18C, so swims are bracing rather than balmy, yet for walking the cliffs, taking the islands quietly and enjoying the coast at a gentle price, May is hard to beat.

June. A strong all rounder, and the second half of the month is arguably the best window of the year. The air is hot, the sun is dependable, and the sea has warmed to a swimmable level near 20C, while the worst of the crowds and the highest prices are still a few weeks away. If you want warm beach days with a little breathing room, late June is the pick.

August. The hottest, busiest and most expensive month. The sea is at its warmest near 22C and the weather is reliably dry and sunny, which is why families and holidaymakers fill the coast. Beaches, restaurants and parking are at their most crowded, so book well ahead, start beach days early, and use the calmer eastern islands or the vast west coast strands to escape the density.

September. The connoisseur's month. The sea is still warm after a summer of heating, near 21C, the air is hot but no longer fierce, and the August crowds thin out noticeably once the school holidays end. Prices ease, the light softens, and the beaches feel spacious again. For many regular visitors September offers the best overall balance of warm sea, sun and space.

October. A soft, underrated month. The sea holds a mild warmth near 20C, the air stays pleasant, and the coast is quiet as the season winds down. Rain becomes more likely as the month goes on, so the weather is less certain, but a fine October day on a near empty Algarve beach, with the sea still swimmable, is one of the region's quiet pleasures.

Good questions

Before you go

What is the best month to visit the Algarve for the beach?

The second half of June and the month of September offer the best balance, with warm sea, long sun and far smaller crowds than the August peak. May is excellent for warm sun and space if you do not mind a cooler sea. August has the warmest water but the biggest crowds and highest prices, so it is best booked well ahead.

When is the sea warmest in the Algarve?

The Atlantic is warmest in August and into September, reaching around 22C, because it warms slowly through the summer rather than early. June sea temperatures sit nearer 20C, which most swimmers find comfortable on a hot day. Spring and autumn swims are bracing, and the shallow eastern lagoon beaches often feel a little warmer than the open coast.

When is the Algarve least crowded?

The cooler edges of the year, from November through to April, are the quietest, with near empty beaches and dramatic light, though the sea is cold and rain is more likely in winter. For warm weather with space, the shoulder months of May, June and September are far quieter than the July and August peak.

Does it rain much in the Algarve?

The Algarve is dry through the summer, with rain concentrated in the winter months from November to February. Spring and autumn see occasional showers, increasing later in October. From June to September you can expect reliably dry, sunny beach weather, though conditions are typical rather than guaranteed and a rare summer shower is possible.

Is the Algarve good to visit in winter?

Winter suits walkers and quiet seekers rather than swimmers. The air stays mild, often reaching the mid teens by day, and the light is beautiful, but the sea is cold near 15C and rain comes in spells. It is a fine time for clifftop walks, near empty beaches and lower prices, just not for a proper beach swimming holiday.
