The Algarve people photograph is the western cliff coast, all ochre stacks and golden coves, and it is beautiful. But it is not where the white sand lives. That golden colour is the cliff itself bleeding into the sand, and the truly pale, fine grain of the region sits somewhere quieter and harder to reach, out on the long barrier islands that shelter the lagoon of the Ria Formosa.
These islands are a naturalist's Algarve. Low dune ridges, salt marsh behind, clouds of wading birds and miles of pale sand that you reach by a short ferry rather than a car park. The sand runs almost white where the rivers and the cliffs no longer reach it, and the shallow lagoon side warms up gently while the ocean side stays bracing and clear.
We have ranked these on pale sand and wild feel first. The winners are the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa and a couple of long open western strands, where you trade easy parking for a boat ride and get a far wilder, paler beach at the end of it. The famous cliff coves are lovely to look at, but they are golden, busy and small.
The whitest sand in the Algarve
Judged on the colour and grain of the sand, the clarity of the water and how wild the island setting feels.
Ilha Deserta
The wildest of the barrier islands, a thin ribbon of pale sand and dune reached only by boat from Faro with a single restaurant and no other development. The sand is fine and pale, the birdlife is constant and the far ends are yours alone. Bring water and shade and respect the dune paths.
Tavira Island
A long barrier island off Tavira with kilometres of pale fine sand, a short ferry hop and just enough of a beach bar to keep you fed. The lagoon side is calm and warm and the ocean side is open and clear. Walk away from the ferry landing and the crowd thins to nothing.
Meia Praia
A long open strand of pale gold sand stretching east from Lagos, wide enough to absorb a crowd and backed by low dune rather than cliff. The water is clear and the space is the draw, with room to walk for an hour. Paler and more open than the cliff coves nearby.
Quinta do Lago
A pale sand beach on the edge of the Ria Formosa reached over a long wooden bridge across the marsh, which keeps the feel natural and the birdlife close. The sand is fine and light and the dunes are protected. Smart and calm without losing the wild lagoon setting behind it.
Falesia
A vast beach below dramatic ochre and white cliffs that give the sand a golden cast at the base and a paler tone further out. The scale is the point, with kilometres of shore under the layered cliffs. Golden rather than white, but open, clean and far less cramped than the small coves.
Cliffs are golden, the islands are pale
Here is the honest geography. The western Algarve coves that fill every postcard, places like Praia da Marinha and the Benagil area, are golden, small and busy, because the ochre cliffs that frame them are the very thing colouring the sand. They are gorgeous to look at and a poor choice if pale fine sand and space are what you want.
The white sand of the Algarve is out on the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa, at Ilha Deserta, Tavira Island and the lagoon edge of Quinta do Lago. You reach them by boat or over a long marsh bridge, which is exactly why they stay wild, pale and uncrowded. The trade is a little planning around the ferry and the tides for a far better beach.
Tread the islands lightly. They are a protected lagoon system full of nesting and feeding birds, so keep to the boardwalks, take your litter home and give the roped dunes space. Do that and the Ria Formosa gives you the pale, quiet Algarve that the cliff coves cannot.
Clubs near the white sand
The wild barrier islands keep things to a single restaurant or a simple beach bar, which is part of their charm, so the polished club scene sits back on the mainland around Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago. There you will find smart beach restaurants and day bed service a short drive from the lagoon ferries. For who runs what and where a booking is worth making, see our Algarve beach clubs directory, and we will check a date for you.

Before you go
Which Algarve beach has the whitest sand?
The barrier islands of the Ria Formosa hold the palest, finest sand, with Ilha Deserta and Tavira Island the standouts. Reached by boat from Faro and Tavira, they keep a wild, pale, uncrowded shore that the golden cliff coves of the western Algarve cannot match.
Why is the western Algarve sand golden rather than white?
The famous western coves sit below ochre cliffs, and that cliff colour bleeds into the sand, giving it a golden cast. For a paler, finer grain you head east to the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa, where the cliffs no longer reach and the sand runs almost white.
How do I get to the barrier island beaches?
Ilha Deserta and Tavira Island are reached by short passenger ferries from Faro and Tavira, while Quinta do Lago is crossed on a long wooden bridge over the marsh. Check the ferry timetable and the tides before you set out, and carry water and shade since facilities are minimal.
Are these white sand beaches good for families?
The lagoon sides are calm and shallow and warm gently, which suits paddling, while the ocean sides are more open and bracing. Conditions are typical rather than guaranteed, so read the water and any flags. The ferry trip is part of the fun, but bring everything you need as shops are scarce.
How do I protect the Ria Formosa when I visit?
The lagoon is a protected nature park full of feeding and nesting birds, so keep to the boardwalks and marked paths through the dunes, take all litter home and give roped areas and bird groups a wide berth. Light footed visits keep these pale islands wild.
