Praia de Odeceixe is one of the most charming beaches on the wild west coast, set where the Seixe river curls out to meet the Atlantic right on the border between the Algarve and the Alentejo. The result is two beaches in one. On the river side the water is shallow, calm and noticeably warmer, perfect for small children and for a float that you simply cannot get on the open coast. On the sea side the full Atlantic rolls in, drawing surfers and bodyboarders to a clean beach break below dark schist cliffs.
That split personality is the honest appeal and the thing to plan around. If you have young children, set up on the river side and let the ocean be a view. If you have come to surf, the sea side is your ground, with operators running lessons and hire in season. The beach is not huge, so in July and August it fills through the middle of the day, and the access road and parking can get tight. The pretty whitewashed village of Odeceixe sits on the hill behind, a few minutes by car, with more cafes and a relaxed end of the world feel.
Come in the shoulder months for the best of it, when the sand has space and the water on the river side is still warm enough to enjoy. Treat the ocean with respect, since the surf and currents are powerful and never guaranteed, and keep children on the river side where the water is gentlest. For pure surf the neighbouring beaches at Amado and Bordeira are more exposed, but for the rare combination of calm family water and real waves in one spot, Odeceixe is hard to beat.
Odeceixe is a wild river and surf beach with cafes and surf hire rather than a beach club. For club style beds and bars, see our Algarve beach clubs directory.
Seasonal beach cafes and snack bars operate at Odeceixe through the summer, serving drinks, light food and the odd sunbed. They keep things simple and relaxed, and opening times and any lounger hire vary and are to be confirmed.
Surf operators run lessons and board hire on the ocean side of the beach in season, the easiest safe way for beginners to ride the Atlantic break here. Timetables and prices vary and are to be confirmed.
Praia de Odeceixe lies on the Algarve and Alentejo border below the village of Odeceixe, near Aljezur on the west coast, roughly an hour and three quarters by car from Faro airport and about an hour north of Lagos. A car is the realistic way to reach it, as public transport is limited and seasonal.
A road runs down from the village to parking above the sand, with paths to both the river and the ocean sides. Bring water, sun protection and a windbreak, and check the surf and forecast before you go, since the ocean side is exposed and conditions there are powerful and never guaranteed.
Odeceixe is a wild river and surf beach with no club, but share your date and party and we will point you to club style beds and bars elsewhere in the Algarve. No charge to enquire.
Yes, mainly thanks to the river side, where the water is shallow, calm and warmer than the open sea, which suits young children. Keep them on the river side, as the ocean shore has real surf and currents, and bring shade and supplies since facilities are seasonal.
Yes, the ocean side is a well liked beach break on the west coast, with surf operators running lessons and hire in season. It works across a range of swells, but the Atlantic here is powerful, so beginners should go with a school and everyone should check conditions first.
Because the Seixe river meets the sea here, creating a calm, shallow river lagoon on one side and an open Atlantic shore on the other. That gives you gentle family water and real surf in the same place, which is the beach signature draw.
It sits below Odeceixe village near Aljezur on the west coast, about an hour and three quarters by car from Faro and an hour north of Lagos. A road leads down to parking above the sand, and public transport is limited, so most visitors drive.
June, September and October offer warm, settled weather with fewer crowds than August, when the modest sand and parking fill fast. The river side stays pleasant into autumn, and the wind is often lighter than in high summer, though always check the forecast.
