Praia do Porto de Mos is the Lagos beach that locals point you to when the famous coves are heaving. It is a long, wide band of golden sand below low cliffs on the southern edge of town, with the same clear light and ochre rock as Camilo and Dona Ana but a fraction of the crush, because here there is simply far more room.
The trade is a little less drama for a lot more comfort. There are no rock tunnels or hidden pockets, just an honest open beach with a car park near the sand, ramp access rather than a long stairway, a beach restaurant and seasonal sunbeds. The water is open bay rather than sheltered cove, so it can be a touch livelier, but on settled days it is fine for a swim, and the space means you are not fighting for a towel spot.
It works best as a full day base and a walking start point. From the southern end, the clifftop trail climbs toward Ponta da Piedade and its rock stacks, one of the finest coastal walks in the Algarve, so you can combine a relaxed beach day with a scenic hike. Come in May, June or September, settle near the restaurant, and walk the cliffs in the soft light of early morning or evening.

Praia do Porto de Mos sits on the southern edge of Lagos, a few minutes drive from the centre and about an hour from Faro airport by car. The road runs down close to the sand, with a car park by the beach, making it one of the easier Lagos beaches to reach with kit and family.
Ramp access leads onto the sand, easier than the long stairways at the cliff coves nearby. Bring the usual sun kit, and pair the visit with the clifftop walk south toward Ponta da Piedade, which starts from the far end of the beach and rewards an early or late start with soft light over the rock stacks.

For space and a relaxed full day, often yes. It has the same cliff scenery and clear light as Camilo and Dona Ana, but far more room and easier access, so it is the better choice when the famous coves are packed. For wow factor in a tiny cove, the coves still win.
Yes, a car park sits close to the sand, with road access running down to the beach, making it easier to reach with kit and family than the cliff coves. It fills in peak summer afternoons, so arrive in the morning for the closest spaces.

It is open bay water, a touch livelier than the sheltered coves, but usually fine for swimming on settled days with seasonal lifeguard cover. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed, so follow local guidance, especially when the wind picks up in the afternoon.
May, June and September bring warm weather and plenty of room, and the beach stays quieter than the famous coves even through the summer peak. Mornings are calmest for swimming and best for the clifftop walk toward Ponta da Piedade.
