Lefkada is the most surprising of the Ionian islands, and the honest read is that it has some of the most dramatic beaches in all of Greece. The west coast is a run of white cliffs falling to pale pebble and impossibly turquoise water, Porto Katsiki, Egremni, Kathisma and Milos among them, while the sheltered south and east give calm coves and a famous windsurf bay. Best of all, you do not need a ferry, because a causeway joins Lefkada directly to the mainland.
The island divides by coast and by wind, and understanding both is the key to a good day. The west coast beaches are the showstoppers, but they face the open sea and pick up a reliable afternoon thermal that locals around Vasiliki nickname Eric, so the water is calm and clear in the morning and choppier by mid afternoon. The south, at Vasiliki and Ponti, turns that same wind into the windsurf and kitesurf capital of the Mediterranean, while the east coast around Nidri is shallow, sheltered and family friendly.
We rank the beaches below on the setting, the swim, the access and the honest crowds, and we say plainly which are easy and which mean a long staircase or a boat. Several of the best are pebble and sand rather than soft sand, water shoes help, and a couple, Milos and Agiofili, are reached only on foot or by a short water taxi. The short version is to swim the west coast early, ride or watch the wind in the south, and keep the calm east for the children.

Porto Katsiki
The island's signature image, a sheer white cliff above pale pebble and sand and vivid turquoise water, reached down around eighty to a hundred carved steps from a paid clifftop car park. The setting is genuinely spectacular rather than overhyped, but the cliff shades the sand until midday and then it bakes, and the car park fills by late morning in summer, so arrive early.
Egremni
A long sweep of pale sand and pebble under towering cliffs, with some of the most photographed water on the island. Access has been unstable since a 2015 earthquake destroyed the original road and staircase, so the safe and reliable way in is now by boat from Vasiliki or Nidri, and you should verify the current land access locally before relying on walking down.
Kathisma
The longest and most popular west coast beach, a wide stretch of golden sand with shallow, calm water near shore, reachable by car or bus and famous for its sunsets. It is the most facilitated of the west beaches, with organised beach bars and loungers and a lively scene in season, so come here for comfort and buzz rather than for solitude.
Agiofili
A small, sheltered cove of fine pale pebble and exceptionally clear, calm water tucked under a green hillside, far calmer than the exposed west beaches. It is reached either on a rough track from Vasiliki or, more easily, on the hourly water taxi from Vasiliki port, and being small it crowds quickly, so it rewards an early arrival.
Milos Beach
A wild, unspoiled cove of coarse smooth white pebble and deep turquoise water, reached only on foot over the headland from Agios Nikitas or by a short water taxi. There is no road access at all and limited shade in the centre, and the afternoon wind can build chop and disrupt the boat, so go in the morning for the calmest, clearest water.
Pefkoulia
A long, easily accessible sand and shingle beach with bright blue water and, unusually for the west coast, natural pine shade at the back from the trees it is named for. Being open to the west it can pick up afternoon wind and small waves, and parts are organised with loungers while other stretches are plain, so you can choose your level of comfort.
Kalamitsi
A quieter mixed shingle and sand beach below Kalamitsi village, with turquoise water and sun all day, sitting among the less developed western cluster alongside Kavalikefta and Avali. There are fewer facilities and a winding descent from the village, and the neighbouring coves are even more undeveloped, so bring your own supplies and enjoy the calm.
Vasiliki
A long, gently shelving beach in the sheltered Vasiliki bay, the windsurf and kitesurf capital of the Mediterranean, with calm, beginner friendly mornings and a reliable afternoon thermal. Loungers, coffee bars and tavernas line the Vasiliki and Ponti sides, but this is a wind sports beach by design, so for flat calm afternoon swimming the west coast cliffs serve you better.
When to go
Lefkada runs a long summer season and the value lives in the shoulders. The beach bars broadly run from June to September, with August the warmest sea at around twenty six degrees and also the busiest and priciest, when the car parks fill early. June and September give almost the same warm water with more room and softer bills, and late May and early October are lovely for swimming and walking when the heat eases.
The single most useful pattern to plan around is the afternoon wind. On the west coast the dominant summer thermal builds from around midday and peaks in the late afternoon, so beaches like Milos, Pefkoulia and Agios Ioannis can turn choppy and windy after lunch. The club layer
Lefkada's beach club layer is really a beach bar layer, relaxed and good value, concentrated at Kathisma on the west coast and around Vasiliki and Agios Ioannis. Kathisma has the most organised scene, with sunbeds, food and afternoon music at bars like Copla, while the wind beaches at Vasiliki and Agios Ioannis have laid back bars geared to the windsurf and kitesurf crowd.

Which side of Lefkada has the best beaches, and are they sand or pebble?
The west coast has the showstoppers, Porto Katsiki, Egremni, Kathisma, Milos and Pefkoulia, dramatic white cliffs over turquoise water. Most are a pebble and sand mix rather than pure soft sand, Kathisma and Pefkoulia are the sandiest while Porto Katsiki and Milos are more pebble, so water shoes help. The east coast around Nidri is sheltered, shallow and far calmer, better for young families and flat water swimming than for scenery.
Do I really need a rental car?
For the west coast beaches, practically yes, because they are spread along winding mountain roads and are not well served by public transport, so a car lets you reach them and, crucially, arrive early before the clifftop car parks fill. The alternative is the daily boat excursions from Nidri or Vasiliki, which work well for the hard to reach beaches like Egremni, Agiofili and Milos but tie you to fixed schedules.
Can I still walk down to Egremni, or is it boat only?
Treat Egremni as boat access by default and verify land access locally before you go. The 2015 earthquake destroyed the original road and stairway, a metal staircase was reportedly rebuilt later, but further ground movement has led authorities to keep official land access closed at times. The dependable route is a water taxi or boat from Vasiliki or Nidri, so do not bank on driving and walking down without confirming the current status first.
Why is Porto Katsiki so hot in the afternoon, and when should I go?
The cliff that makes Porto Katsiki famous shades the beach only until around midday, and after that it sits in full afternoon sun, so you will want an umbrella. The smart plan is early morning, when you get the shade, calmer water before the afternoon thermal builds, and a parking space before the clifftop lot fills in July and August. The same early start helps at Kathisma and the other popular west coast beaches.
Is Lefkada good for families, or more for windsurfers?
It comfortably covers both. Nidri and the east coast are very family friendly, with calm, shallow, sheltered water, easy boat trips and plenty of dining, while Vasiliki and Agios Ioannis draw windsurfers and kitesurfers thanks to the reliable afternoon thermal.
