Best for. Couples who want the most dramatic stretch of sand in the Ionian and are willing to arrive early or stay late to have its theatre without the midday crush.
Best spot. The far southern end under the white cliff in the first calm hour, when the light is soft, the pebbles are clear and the day boats have not yet rounded the point.
Know this. This is the loudest of the great Lefkada beaches by lunchtime, and the cliff steals the late sun, so for a sunset table for two you want Kathisma or Kalamitsi instead.
Porto Katsiki is the face on every Lefkada postcard, and for once the picture does not lie. A sheer white cliff drops to a slim crescent of pale pebble, the water below shifts from jade to a deep ink blue, and the whole scene has a cinematic drama that no other beach on the island quite matches. Stand at the top before you take the staircase down and you understand why people drive across the island for this one curve of shore. For sheer beauty it earns its fame honestly.
The romance, though, has an honest catch, and it is timing. By late morning the car park fills, the day boats from Nidri and Vasiliki round the point and anchor offshore, and the slim beach fills with sunbeds and noise. The cliff that makes the photograph also throws the southern end into shade in the late afternoon and hides the sunset, so the dreamy golden hour you imagined happens somewhere else. Come at opening, spread your towel at the quiet far end, swim in the clear morning calm, and you get the beach almost to yourselves. Arrive at one in the afternoon and you get a beautiful but crowded shelf of pebbles.
So treat Porto Katsiki as a morning pilgrimage rather than a lazy all day affair. See it early, swim while the water is glassy, climb back up for a coffee with that view, and then move on to a beach that holds the evening light. If your heart is set on a quiet sunset for two, Kalamitsi up the coast or the long sand at Kathisma will serve you far better, and Egremni next door gives you the same wild scale with a fraction of the crowd. Porto Katsiki is unmissable, but it rewards the early and punishes the late.

On the southwest cliffs
Porto Katsiki sits on the southwest coast of Lefkada, around forty minutes by car from Lefkada town along the spine of the island and down a winding road to the cliffs. A car or scooter is by far the easiest way to arrive, as bus links to this corner are sparse, and the drive itself is part of the pleasure.
You park at the top, where the canteens and stalls are, then take the long staircase down to the pebbles. Many couples skip the climb altogether and see the beach from a day boat out of Vasiliki or Nidri, which gives the famous head on view of the cliff. Bring water, sun cover and cash for parking and the canteens.
