The verdict

Best for. Couples who want a long, organised sand beach with a sunbed, a cocktail and the best sunset on the island, without the staircases and effort of the wild coves.

Best spot. A front row lounger at a beach bar in the late afternoon, drink in hand, facing west as the sun drops into the open sea with nothing in the way.

Know this. This is the busiest organised beach on the coast and faces the open west, so a windy day can bring a real swell and undertow, and an early swim is calmer than an afternoon one.

The honest read

Kathisma is the west coast beach you come to when you want the drama of this shore but also a cold drink and a lounger to fall back into. It is long, wide and properly sandy, which on a coast of pebble coves makes it a rarity, and it has grown into the island's main organised beach, with bars strung along the back, watersports buzzing in the bay and tavernas climbing the slope behind. For couples it has one trump card that the wild cliffs cannot match. It faces straight into the open west, so the sunset here is the finest on Lefkada.

That sunset is the reason to plan your day around the evening rather than the middle of it. Through high summer the front loungers fill early, the bars hum and the beach has a lively, social feel that is fun but far from secluded. The honest caveat is the water. Because Kathisma is wide open to the west, a windy afternoon can turn the gentle morning sea into a proper swell with an undertow, and the lifeguard cover is seasonal and not guaranteed, so this is a beach to read before you swim. On a calm day it is glorious. On a blowy one, take care.

So use Kathisma for what it does best. Arrive in the afternoon, take a front sunbed at one of the bars, swim while the sea is settled, and then stay for the main event as the sky burns orange over the water and the whole beach turns to watch. For a quiet, private cove you want Milos or Kalamitsi up and down the coast, and for calm shallow swimming with children the sheltered south is gentler. But for a sunset cocktail with your feet in real sand, nothing on the island beats it.

Above Agios Nikitas

Kathisma sits on the west coast a short drive south of the village of Agios Nikitas, around twenty five minutes by car from Lefkada town over the hill and down to the sea. A car or scooter is the easiest way to arrive, with parking on the flat behind the sand, and the approach gives a fine first view of the long beach below.

Because it is the most organised beach on this coast, you can travel light and hire a sunbed and umbrella from one of the bars when you arrive. Tavernas and cafes line the slope behind, so a full day of swim, lunch, sunset drink and dinner is easy without moving the car, which makes it a relaxed choice for a couple.

Common questions about Kathisma

Does Kathisma have the best sunset in Lefkada?

Yes, it is widely held to be the island's finest. Kathisma faces straight into the open western horizon with nothing between the sand and the sea, so on a clear evening the sun drops directly into the water and the whole beach turns to watch. A front lounger at one of the bars with a drink in hand is the classic way to see it.

Is the water at Kathisma safe for swimming?

On a calm day it is clear and lovely, but Kathisma is wide open to the west, so a windy afternoon can bring a real swell and an undertow. Lifeguard cover is seasonal and not guaranteed, so read the sea before you go in, favour a morning swim when it is calmer, and keep a close watch on children.

Does Kathisma have sunbeds and beach bars?

Yes, it is the most organised beach on the west coast, with several beach bars renting sunbeds and umbrellas, serving food and drinks, and watersports in the bay. Front row loungers fill quickly in summer. Operators, prices and opening hours change by season and are to be confirmed when you visit.

How do you get to Kathisma beach?

Kathisma is on the west coast just south of Agios Nikitas, around twenty five minutes by car from Lefkada town. A car or scooter is the easiest way to arrive, with parking on the flat behind the sand. Because it is fully organised you can travel light and hire a sunbed from one of the bars on arrival.

Is Kathisma good for couples or for families?

It works for both, with a caveat. Couples love it for the sunset, the bars and the long sandy stroll, while families enjoy the services and the space. The open water can get rough and lively on a windy day, though, so for calm shallow swimming with young children the sheltered southern beaches of the island are gentler.
