Zakynthos rewards the traveller who reads it properly. The island wraps a fertile green interior in three very different coasts, and knowing which is which is the difference between a postcard day and a wasted drive. The northwest holds the sheer white cliffs and the famous shipwreck cove, the long Vassilikos peninsula in the south carries the soft golden sand and the protected turtle beaches, and the west coast hides deep, glassy swimming inlets in its rock. The water everywhere is the clear Ionian blue that makes the island worth the trip.
The honest read is that Zakynthos is an easy island to enjoy slowly, with short drives linking a genuine range of beaches and a quieter, greener feel than the Aegean islands. The headline name is Navagio, the shipwreck cove, but the most rewarding days on the sand sit elsewhere, on the gentle protected beaches of Vassilikos and in the swimming coves of the west. Below we rank the beaches that actually repay a day, and we are clear about which one suits which traveller, and where the famous name is now a view rather than a beach.
Ranked, not listed
Scored on the water, the setting, the sand and how easy each is to enjoy. Honest verdicts, the view only cove flagged.
Gerakas
The connoisseur choice, a curve of soft golden sand backed by sculpted clay cliffs at the tip of the Vassilikos peninsula. Part of the National Marine Park and a key loggerhead nesting beach, so it stays calm, low key and protected, with shallow warm water that suits a refined family day.
Navagio
The most photographed cove in the Ionian, a rusting wreck on white shingle under towering cliffs. Honest note, the sand is closed to landings while the cliffs are stabilised, so you admire it from a boat anchored offshore or the clifftop platform rather than walking on it.
Porto Limnionas
The local choice for a swim, a narrow inlet of deep glassy water between low cliffs near Agios Leon, with a taverna terrace above and no sand at all. Lovely for snorkelling and unhurried swimming, best in the morning before the midday crowd arrives.
Banana
The longest sweep of golden sand on the island, fully organised with sunbeds, water sports and easy beach bars. Lively and sociable but long enough to find quiet at the ends, the natural pick for an active full day on the sand in the south.
Xigia
A tiny dramatic cove where natural sulphur springs seep into the sea, leaving a faint scent and water that locals swear softens the skin. Deep, clear and framed by steep cliffs, a curiosity worth an early start before the small car park fills.
Marathonisi
The little turtle island in Laganas Bay, reached by small boat from Keri or Limni Keriou, with pale sand and shallow water where loggerheads are often seen. A half day excursion rather than a lounging beach, and a gentle, memorable one at that.
Laganas
The long party strip and the island cliche, a wide sandy bay fronted by loud bars that fills with a young crowd in summer. The sand is fine and the bay is a protected turtle zone, but for a calm or refined day we would send you to Gerakas or Vassilikos instead.
Who it suits, who should skip
Who should skip what? If you came for the shipwreck cove, set expectations honestly. Navagio is closed to landings while engineers stabilise the cliffs, so it is a view from a boat or the clifftop, not a swim. It is still worth seeing, but build the day around a morning boat or a quiet clifftop hour rather than a beach. For an actual day on the sand, the south is the answer, with Gerakas the refined choice and Banana the lively one, both on the gentle Vassilikos peninsula.
The overrated name to handle with care is Laganas. The bay is a fine stretch of sand and an important turtle zone, but its strip is loud and aimed at a young party crowd, and it is not where a discerning traveller spends a calm day. Go instead to Gerakas for protected golden sand, to Porto Limnionas for a deep clear swim, or out to little Marathonisi to see the turtles. Logistics are easy across the island, a hire car opens everything in short hops, parking is manageable outside the very peak, and the small coves reward an early start before the boats and the heat arrive.
The best months in Zakynthos
Zakynthos has a long, gentle beach season. July and August bring the warmest sea, the strongest sun and the busiest sand, along with peak prices and the liveliest nights in Laganas. June and September are the sweet spot, with warm clear water, lighter crowds and easier parking at the small coves, while May and October stay pleasant for swimming and exploring as the season eases. The loggerhead turtles nest in Laganas Bay through the warm months, which is why the protected beaches close at night and keep their services light, a rhythm worth planning around rather than fighting.
Where to book a daybed
The Zakynthos club scene is a relaxed, good value affair rather than a glamour parade. The names to know first are Cameo Beach Club, the little islet bar reached by a wooden bridge at Agios Sostis that comes into its own for a sunset drink, and the two easygoing beach bars on the long Vassilikos sand, Banana Baya and Casa Playa, for a comfortable full day. Tsilivi adds a strip of livelier bars on the north coast. Our full directory compares every venue by beach and vibe and lets the club confirm any minimum spend when you enquire.

Before you go
Which is the best beach in Zakynthos?
For an actual day on the sand the answer is Gerakas, a protected curve of soft golden sand on the Vassilikos peninsula with calm shallow water. Navagio is the famous one but closed to landings for now, while Porto Limnionas is the local pick for a deep clear swim off the rocks.
Can you still go to Navagio shipwreck beach?
You can see it but not land on it. Walking on the sand and swimming in the cove are prohibited for now while the unstable cliffs are stabilised, so the wreck is admired from a boat anchored offshore or from the reinforced clifftop platform. The exact status can change and is to be confirmed before you travel.
Which side of Zakynthos has the best beaches?
It depends on the day you want. The southern Vassilikos peninsula holds the best true sand beaches like Gerakas and Banana, the west coast hides deep swimming coves such as Porto Limnionas, and the dramatic northwest carries the white cliffs and Navagio. The south is the safe base for soft sand and calm water.
Are the beaches in Zakynthos sandy?
The best southern beaches like Gerakas and Banana are soft golden sand, while the famous coves are different in character, with white shingle at Navagio and deep rocky inlets like Porto Limnionas and Xigia on the other coasts. For the softest sand and calmest water, the Vassilikos peninsula in the south is the standout.
When is the best time to visit Zakynthos beaches?
June and September are the sweet spot, with warm clear water and long days without the full July and August peak in crowds and prices. May and October are quieter and good for swimming and exploring as the season winds down. The turtle nesting season shapes the protected beaches through the summer.
