The sea takes the early summer to warm and holds its heat well into autumn, the beach bars run for the warm half of the year, and the island fills sharply in the July and August peak. When each month earns its place
June. The pick of early summer. The sea has warmed to a pleasant swim, the sun is strong and reliable, and while the island is busy it has not yet hit the August wall of heat, crowds and prices. The boat shuttles to Agiofili and the day boats to Porto Katsiki and Egremni are all running, the long evenings stretch the golden hour at Kathisma, and the west coast beaches still have room before the afternoon wind. For a classic Lefkada beach day with a margin of calm, June is the smart choice for couples.
July. High summer arrives with intense sun and warm, clear water. Every beach bar and boat runs at full tilt, Porto Katsiki and Kathisma fill by late morning, and the south at Vasiliki hums with windsurfers riding the afternoon thermal. The trade off is the crowds and prices, and the exposed west coast can turn swelly after lunch. Favour an early swim while the sea is glassy, take the first boat to Agiofili, and save the wild coves for the calmest mornings.
August. The hottest sea of the year and the busiest month. This is the holiday peak, so the beaches, boats and roads are at their fullest and prices at their highest. The swimming is superb and the water warm and clear, but a relaxed day takes planning, an early start and a booked sunbed. The afternoon wind is at its most dependable on the west coast, so read the sea before you swim and keep the famous beaches for the morning calm.
September. For many couples the best month of all. The sea is still warm from the long summer, the sun stays strong and the crowds thin noticeably after the first week as the school holidays end. Beach bars and boat shuttles run through most of the month, prices ease and the heat becomes very pleasant. If you can travel in September, you get close to the peak swim with far more breathing room, gentler afternoons and the loveliest light for a sunset at Kathisma.
October. The season winds down, but slowly. The first half of the month can still offer warm, calm swimming days, especially at the sheltered beaches, though many beach bars and boat shuttles start to close and rain becomes more likely. It is a beautiful time for the green hills, the harbour villages and the quieter coves, with a swim as a warm bonus on the settled days rather than the main event of a Lefkada holiday.
