The verdict
- Best forTravellers deciding how to reach the best beaches and clubs in Lefkada, and where a paid day is worth it over the free public sand
- Single best spotCopla Beach Bar and Kathisma beach bars are the names to know first
- One thing to knowThe west coast beaches face the open sea and pick up a strong afternoon wind, so swim and sunbathe in the morning, and Lefkada is reached by road across a causeway, not by ferry

Read Lefkada honestly and it has beach bars rather than glossy beach clubs, which suits the island's easygoing west coast character. The most organised scene is at Kathisma, where a row of beach bars rents loungers and umbrellas, serves food and cocktails and plays music into the sunset, and where one or two spots edge toward a proper club feel with a pool and afternoon parties. The south, at Vasiliki and Ponti, and the north at Agios Ioannis, have relaxed bars built around the windsurf and kitesurf life.
The venues below are real, established places, ordered by the kind of day they suit, and because lounger and sunbed prices vary widely by bar, by row and by season we mark them to be confirmed and never quote a single figure as the standard. Lefkada rewards a simple approach, a sunbed at a Kathisma bar for a comfortable day, a coffee and a watch of the kites at Vasiliki, and the free open sand of the wild coves the rest of the time.
How much a day bed costs in Lefkada

Every venue, by the setting it owns
Real, established places. Any fee or minimum spend is to be confirmed.
| Venue | Setting | Vibe | Minimum spend | Booking note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Copla Beach Bar | Kathisma | The most club like Kathisma bar, pool and sunset | To be confirmed | The most club like of the Kathisma beach bars, with loungers, food and cocktails, a pool and a Jacuzzi, afternoon music and DJ sets and a celebrated sunset, in a building praised for blending into its setting. It leans upscale for Lefkada, and front row sunbeds cost more than the back, so confirm the lounger price and consider booking ahead on busy summer days. Any minimum is to be confirmed. |
| Kathisma beach bars | Kathisma | Relaxed loungers, food and music on the sand | To be confirmed | Beyond Copla, Kathisma has a cluster of relaxed beach bars and restaurants offering loungers, umbrellas, food and drinks along its long golden sand, from laid back to lively. They are the easy comfort option on the west coast, a place to take a sunbed for the day and stay for the sunset, with prices that vary by bar and row and are to be confirmed. The open stretches of sand between them are free. |
| Grand Nefeli | Ponti, Vasiliki bay | Relaxed beach bar by the windsurf bay | To be confirmed | A relaxed beach bar on the Ponti side of Vasiliki bay, with loungers, food and drinks and the easygoing atmosphere of the wind sports crowd, looking across the sheltered bay. It suits a calm morning swim and a long lazy lunch while the windsurfers wait for the afternoon thermal to build, and the sunbed and food prices are to be confirmed. The bay itself is gentle and beginner friendly in the morning. |
| The Bar at Odeon, Vasiliki | Vasiliki seafront | Stylish beach bar with table service | To be confirmed | A more stylish, sophisticated beach bar on the Vasiliki seafront, with table service for coffee, beer, cocktails and snacks and a relaxed upscale feel a notch above the standard beach cafes. It is a good base for a day in the windsurf village, somewhere to sit comfortably between swims and watch the bay, with prices to be confirmed. Vasiliki beach itself is open and free to use. |
| Milos Beach centre, Agios Ioannis | Agios Ioannis, north | Windsurf and kitesurf centre with a bar | To be confirmed | The windsurf and kitesurf centre by the old windmills at Agios Ioannis, with equipment, lessons and a bar and food service that acts as the hub of the north kite beach. It is geared to wind sports rather than sunbathing, a touch pricey by local standards, and the surrounding beach has further relaxed cafes, with prices to be confirmed. The wide flat water here is what draws the kites and the windsurfers. |
Where to spend and where to swim free
The simplest way to spend well on a Lefkada beach day is to treat a sunbed as an optional comfort rather than a necessity, because the best beaches are free public sand. At Kathisma and Pefkoulia you can take a lounger at a beach bar for a comfortable, serviced day, or spread a towel on the open stretches between the bars for nothing, and the water is the same either way. Save the pricier front row sunbeds and the more club like spots for one relaxed day, and confirm the price first, because it climbs with the row and the season.
Time your day to the wind and you will get the best of both worlds. Swim and take the sun on the west coast in the morning when the sea is calmest and clearest, move to a Kathisma bar for the lively afternoon and the sunset, and let the windsurfers have the thermal at Vasiliki and Agios Ioannis. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed, the open west coast can build chop and current in the afternoon, so judge the sea yourself and keep an eye on children when the wind gets up.

Before you go
Which side of Lefkada has the best beaches, and are they sand or pebble?
The west coast has the showstoppers, Porto Katsiki, Egremni, Kathisma, Milos and Pefkoulia, dramatic white cliffs over turquoise water. Most are a pebble and sand mix rather than pure soft sand, Kathisma and Pefkoulia are the sandiest while Porto Katsiki and Milos are more pebble, so water shoes help. The east coast around Nidri is sheltered, shallow and far calmer, better for young families and flat water swimming than for scenery.
Do I really need a rental car?
For the west coast beaches, practically yes, because they are spread along winding mountain roads and are not well served by public transport, so a car lets you reach them and, crucially, arrive early before the clifftop car parks fill. The alternative is the daily boat excursions from Nidri or Vasiliki, which work well for the hard to reach beaches like Egremni, Agiofili and Milos but tie you to fixed schedules.
Can I still walk down to Egremni, or is it boat only?
Treat Egremni as boat access by default and verify land access locally before you go. The 2015 earthquake destroyed the original road and stairway, a metal staircase was reportedly rebuilt later, but further ground movement has led authorities to keep official land access closed at times. The dependable route is a water taxi or boat from Vasiliki or Nidri, so do not bank on driving and walking down without confirming the current status first.
Why is Porto Katsiki so hot in the afternoon, and when should I go?
The cliff that makes Porto Katsiki famous shades the beach only until around midday, and after that it sits in full afternoon sun, so you will want an umbrella. The smart plan is early morning, when you get the shade, calmer water before the afternoon thermal builds, and a parking space before the clifftop lot fills in July and August. The same early start helps at Kathisma and the other popular west coast beaches.
Is Lefkada good for families, or more for windsurfers?
It comfortably covers both. Nidri and the east coast are very family friendly, with calm, shallow, sheltered water, easy boat trips and plenty of dining, while Vasiliki and Agios Ioannis draw windsurfers and kitesurfers thanks to the reliable afternoon thermal. You can build a quiet family trip around the calm east and the morning west coast swims, or an active wind sports trip in the south, on the same island.
