The verdict

  • Who it is for. Travellers who want a scenic, volcanic island coast of pale sand and black rock, who will drive the ring road to reach it, and who understand that swimming here is a short summer season rather than a year round affair.
  • The pick. Hyeopjae on the west coast for the white shell sand and emerald shallows, Hamdeok in the northeast for the easiest turquoise bay near Jeju City, and Jungmun on the south coast when you want surf rather than a calm paddle.
  • The one thing to know. Jeju is not a tropical lounging island. The beaches are beautiful but the sea is only warm enough to swim through July and August, so time the trip to the season you actually want.
The lay of the coast

A volcanic island ringed by sand and rock

Jeju is a volcanic island off the south coast of South Korea, a broad green dome built around Hallasan, the country highest mountain, and ringed by a coast road that strings its beaches together. That ring road is the key to the place, because the best beaches sit well apart on different shores and the character of the sand changes as you drive. The west coast around Hallim holds the famous white shell sand and the clearest emerald water, the northeast near Jocheon and Gujwa runs a line of turquoise bays and cafe villages, and the south around Seogwipo and Jungmun gathers the resorts and the surf.

What ties them together is the volcanic stone. Almost every beach here is framed by black basalt, the dark rock setting off the pale sand and the jade shallows in a contrast you do not get on a tropical island. The flip side is the climate. This is a temperate island, not the tropics, so the swimming is a genuine summer season that runs through July and August, when the sea warms and the lifeguards come on duty, and the rest of the year the beaches become scenic walks, sunset stops and coffee with a view rather than places to swim.

We rank on what each shore actually gives, the sand, the water and the kind of day, and we weigh how you reach it, because on Jeju the drive and the parking are part of the plan. We are honest about which beaches reward the trip across the island, which get overrun in the short summer peak, and which are better admired from the coast path than swum in. A rental car from the airport and a sense of the season are all you need to do it well.

1
White shell sand and shallow emerald water at Hyeopjae Beach on the west coast of Jeju Island
West coast, Hallim

Hyeopjae Beach

The west coast star, a long curve of bright white shell sand and shallow emerald water with Biyangdo island floating offshore and Hallim Park next door. Verdict: the most complete Jeju beach for a family swim in season, gentle, scenic and well served by cafes and rentals, though it fills fast in the July and August peak so arrive early for the parking.

2
Turquoise shallow water and white sand at Hamdeok Beach in the northeast of Jeju Island
Northeast, Jocheon

Hamdeok Beach

A bright turquoise bay backed by the little Seoubong peak and a run of cafes, and the easiest good beach to reach from Jeju City. Verdict: shallow, calm and family friendly with a short walk to a fine viewpoint, which makes it the natural pick for a first beach day or a base near the airport, though its convenience means crowds and a busy car park in summer.

3
Surf and colored volcanic sand at Jungmun Saekdal Beach on the south coast of Jeju Island
South, Seogwipo

Jungmun Saekdal Beach

A dramatic south coast beach of sand in several shades, backed by cliffs and the Jungmun resort cluster, and the island best known surf break. Verdict: the scene stealer for looks and the place to take a surf lesson, but the current and waves are rough and it is not a calm family swim, so come for the surf and the setting and read the flags before you go in.

Golden sand and calm water at Gwakji Beach in Aewol on the west coast of Jeju Island
West, Aewol

Gwakji Beach

A wide, gently sloping bay of golden sand near Aewol, often calmer and a touch less windy than the rest of the coast, with a freshwater spring shower on the sand. Verdict: one of the most comfortable family swims on the island and a lovely sunset beach, quieter than Hyeopjae just along the coast, a strong pick for an easy day in the water. We list the venues in the directory.

White sand and jade water at Gimnyeong Beach in the northeast of Jeju Island
Northeast, Gujwa

Gimnyeong Beach

A bright crescent of white sand and jade water in the northeast, set against the row of white wind turbines that line this stretch of coast. Verdict: one of the prettiest small bays on the island and usually quieter than Hamdeok nearby, a fine choice for a calm swim and a photograph, though it is a drive from the city and the facilities are simpler. We list the venues in the directory.

Light grey sand and calm water at Iho Tewoo Beach near Jeju City
North, Jeju City

Iho Tewoo Beach

The closest beach to Jeju City and the airport, a wide stretch of soft light grey sand with calm water and the two red and white horse shaped lighthouses at its harbour. Verdict: not the prettiest sand on the island, but the most convenient by far, well equipped with showers and changing rooms and a popular sunset and night spot, the easy choice on a short stay. We list the venues in the directory.

The honest read

The season, the drive and the sand

The single most useful thing to understand about Jeju is that its beaches keep a season. Through July and August the sea is warm enough to swim, the lifeguards are posted and the bays buzz with families, and that is the window most people picture. Come in spring or autumn and the same beaches are gorgeous to walk and photograph but the water is cool, while winter brings cold wind off the sea. None of this is a fault, it just means you should match your trip to the day you want, a summer swim or a shoulder season coast walk with a coffee.

The second thing is the geography. These beaches are scattered around the ring road on different coasts, so a car turns the island into an easy loop and the lack of one turns it into a slog. The clearest emerald water and the white shell sand are on the west around Hyeopjae and Gwakji, the gentle turquoise bays and the cafe coast are in the northeast around Hamdeok and Gimnyeong, and the surf and the resorts are on the south at Jungmun. Pick a base near the coast you most want and drive out to the others, rather than trying to do all three shores in a day.

Be honest with yourself about what kind of beach you are after. Jungmun is the most striking to look at and the place to surf, but the current is rough and it is no place for a toddler to paddle, so calm family swimming belongs at Hyeopjae, Gwakji or Hamdeok instead. The famous beaches fill quickly in the peak weeks, so arrive early for the sand and the parking, carry water and sun cover, and respect the lifeguard flags and the volcanic rock underfoot. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed, and there is no swimming safety promise.

Getting there and essentials

Planning your days

Almost everyone arrives by air into Jeju International Airport, just outside Jeju City on the north coast, on one of the very frequent flights from Seoul and the other Korean and regional cities. There is also a ferry from the mainland for those bringing a car. From the airport the practical move is to pick up a rental car, because the beaches ring the island on the coast road and a car makes the loop simple, with the nearest beaches like Iho Tewoo only minutes away and the west and south coasts around an hour off. Buses do run to the main beaches but they take longer and tie you to a timetable.

Pack for the season you are visiting, light beachwear and strong sun cover for the July and August swim weeks, and a layer and a windbreaker for the cooler shoulder months when the coast turns breezy. Bring water shoes for the volcanic rock and the rougher beaches, arrive early at the famous bays for the sand and the parking, and check the forecast in summer for rain and the occasional typhoon. Carry some cash for the smaller car parks and rentals, respect the lifeguard flags in season, and treat all conditions as typical and never guaranteed.

Questions, answered

Common questions

Which is the best beach in Jeju?

For most travellers Hyeopjae on the west coast is the pick, with its white shell sand, shallow emerald water and the view across to Biyangdo island. Hamdeok in the northeast is the easy choice if you are based near Jeju City, while Jungmun Saekdal on the south coast is the surf beach rather than a calm swim. The honest answer depends on whether you want a gentle paddle or a wave.

Can you swim at Jeju beaches and how cold is the water?

Yes, but the swim season is short. The official beach season runs through July and August, when the sea climbs to around twenty four to twenty seven degrees Celsius and lifeguards are on duty. Outside those months the water is cool to cold and the beaches turn into scenic walks and cafe stops rather than swimming spots. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.

Do you need a car to reach Jeju beaches?

A rental car is by far the easiest way to reach the beaches, since they are spread around the coastal ring road and the best ones sit well apart on the west, north and south coasts. Public buses do reach the main beaches like Hamdeok and Hyeopjae from Jeju City, but they are slower and less flexible. Most visitors rent a car at Jeju airport and drive the loop.

Which Jeju beaches have black or colored sand?

Samyang near Jeju City is the island black sand beach, while Jungmun Saekdal on the south coast is known for sand in several shades of white, black, red and grey. Many of the white sand beaches such as Geumneung and Gimnyeong are framed by dark basalt rock, which gives Jeju its distinctive contrast of pale sand and black volcanic stone.

When is the best time to visit Jeju beaches?

July and August are the swimming months, though they are also the wettest and busiest and carry some typhoon risk, with late July often the sweet spot after the monsoon breaks. Late spring and early autumn give the most pleasant weather for walking the coast and the cafes, but the water is cool. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.
