The best beaches in Boracay

Powder sand, calm water and the right station for your day.

The verdict

  • Best forFamilies and first time visitors who want soft powder sand and shallow, usually calm water, and who are happy to pick the right end of White Beach rather than land in the busiest, loudest middle.
  • Top pickWhite Beach for the main event, with Station 1 the calmest, widest family end and Diniwid the quiet cove next door, plus Puka in the north when you want space and nature.
  • One thing to knowWhite Beach is calmest in the dry Amihan season, roughly November to May. The wet months can bring wind and seaweed to this side, and Bulabog is the windy kitesurf beach, not a swim.

Boracay is a small island with one very famous beach and a handful of quieter ones that most visitors never see. The headline is White Beach, a long sweep of powder soft sand and shallow, clear water on the west coast that is genuinely as lovely as the photographs, and busy to match. For a family the good news is that the water here is gentle and shallow over a sandy bottom for much of the dry season, the sand is the fine, cool kind that small feet love, and almost everything you need is a short walk along the path behind the beach.

This guide ranks the island the way a parent actually chooses, by how calm and shallow the water tends to be, how soft the sand is, and how much fuss stands between you and an easy day. We lead with the honest verdict on each, we tell you which end of White Beach to aim for, and we point you to the quiet coves when the main strip feels like too much. Conditions are described as typical for the season and never guaranteed, so always read the sea before going in and keep young children close.

A quick orientation. White Beach runs down the west coast and is split into three stretches that locals still call Station 1 in the north, Station 2 in the middle and Station 3 in the south, a hangover from the old boat stations. Station 1 has the widest sand and the calmer, upscale feel, Station 2 is the busy heart with the shops and the nightlife, and Station 3 is quieter and easier on the budget. Diniwid sits just north of Station 1 around a small headland, Puka and the natural beaches lie at the north and northeast tips, and Bulabog faces east as the windy water sports beach. Since the island reopened after its 2018 rehabilitation, drinking and smoking on the sand are not allowed, which keeps White Beach calm and clean by day.

The ranking

Ranked for an easy day

Five beaches, judged on calm shallow water, soft sand and how easy the day actually is.

1
The main event

White Beach

The famous four kilometre sweep of powder sand and shallow, clear water is the easy yes, and the trick is the station. Aim for the wider, calmer Station 1 end for a family day, or quieter Station 3 to the south. The busy middle at Station 2 has the shops, the restaurants and the nightlife, so swim early and base yourself away from the crush.

2
The quiet cove

Diniwid

A small, calm cove just north of Station 1, reached by a shoreline path around the headland, with the same soft sand and clear water and a fraction of the crowd. Boutique places back the sand and the sunset is lovely, which makes it a peaceful base for couples and families who want White Beach quality without the bustle.

3
Natural and spacious

Puka Beach

The long, wild beach at the north tip, named for the puka shells in its coarser, whiter sand. Far quieter than White Beach with few facilities and a more natural feel, it is wonderful for space and a walk, though the water can be livelier and there is little shade, so come prepared and read the sea.

4
Secluded snorkelling

Ilig Iligan

A secluded, leafy beach on the northeast coast with rock formations, clearer snorkelling water and caves nearby, well off the main tourist track. It rewards a little effort to reach with calm and quiet on the right day, but it is a nature beach with minimal facilities, so bring everything you need.

5
The water sports beach

Bulabog

The east coast beach that fills with kitesurfers and windsurfers when the Amihan wind blows from around November to April, the opposite face of the island to White Beach. It is the place for the action, not a swim, with reef and gear in the water, so come to ride or to watch rather than to paddle with children.

The honest read

How to choose, honestly

If you want the least friction with children, base yourself at the Station 1 end of White Beach or in quiet Diniwid next door. Station 1 has the widest sand and the calmest, shallowest water, plus the more comfortable resorts, and Diniwid gives you the same lovely water with far fewer people. Wherever you are on White Beach, the water is usually gentle and shallow in the dry season, but it is still the open sea, so keep young children in the shallows and judge the conditions yourself rather than assuming a safe swim.

The honest catch on White Beach is that it is popular, and Station 2 in particular is busy, commercial and lively into the night. That is part of the fun if you want shops, restaurants and a buzz, and a problem if you came for calm, so the simple fix is to sleep and swim at the quieter ends and visit the middle for dinner. When even the quiet ends feel too built up, the north of the island delivers real space: Puka for a long natural walk and Ilig Iligan for secluded snorkelling, both trading facilities for peace.

Two things apply island wide. First the season. White Beach is at its calm, clear best in the dry Amihan months from around November to May, while the wet Habagat season from June can bring wind, choppier water and seaweed to this side, the same wind that powers the kitesurfers over on Bulabog. Second the rules. Since the 2018 rehabilitation, the beach is kept clean and calm by day, with no drinking or smoking on the sand and the bars set back behind the shore, which is a real plus for a family day. None of these beaches is a guaranteed safe swim, so read the sea, keep children close, and pick the beach to match the season and your day.

The club layer

Where to book a daybed

All Boracay beach clubs

Boracay does the beach club a little differently from the European model. Along White Beach you will find beachfront bars and resort lounges rather than rows of daybeds with a set minimum spend, and the rehabilitation rules keep eating and drinking off the sand and behind the shore. Station 2 has the liveliest beachfront names, while Station 1 leans to the calmer resort lounges and Station 3 to the budget end, and we keep what is currently around in the Boracay club directory with anything unconfirmed marked to be confirmed.

For a family or a couple wanting a comfortable base with food, shade and a lounger close by, the resort beachfronts at the quieter ends are usually the better fit than the party venues in the middle. Tell us the beach and the party and we will pass your enquiry to a club or resort beachfront so they can confirm space and any minimum spend.

Good questions

Before you go

Which is the best beach in Boracay for families?

The Station 1 end of White Beach is the easiest for families, with the widest powder sand and shallow, usually calm water in the dry season. Station 3 to the south is quieter and gentler on the budget. Avoid Bulabog for swimming, since it is the kitesurfing beach with reef and gear in the water.

Is the water at White Beach Boracay calm enough for children?

In the dry Amihan season, roughly November to May, the west facing White Beach is usually calm and shallow with a soft sandy bottom, which suits children. The wet Habagat season from June can bring wind, seaweed and choppier water to this side. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed, so read the sea on the day.

Which Boracay beach is the quietest?

Diniwid, the small cove just north of Station 1, and the natural beaches at the north and northeast of the island, Puka and Ilig Iligan, are the quietest. They trade the shops and restaurants of White Beach for space and calm, so bring water and your own shade for the day.

Can you drink alcohol on the beach in Boracay?

No. Since the 2018 rehabilitation, drinking and smoking on the sand are not allowed and can be fined. You can drink at the beachfront bars and restaurants set back from the shore, and there are designated smoking areas behind the beach. The rules keep White Beach clean and calm in the daytime.

When is the best time to visit Boracay beaches?

The dry season from around November to May gives the calmest, clearest water on White Beach and the most reliable sun, with the peak around December to April. The wet season from June to October brings rain and wind, lower prices and the chance of seaweed on the main beach. Typhoons are possible in the wet months.
