Pyoseon Beach, Jeju

The great tidal beach of the southeast coast, a vast shallow lagoon of warm shin deep water at low tide that all but vanishes at high, so timing is everything here.

The verdict

  • Best for: Families with young children who want the safest, warmest paddle on the island at low tide, travellers happy to plan around a tide table, and anyone pairing the beach with Seongeup Folk Village inland.
  • Best spot: The vast exposed flats on a falling or low tide, when warm shin deep water spreads over hundreds of metres of sand for the gentlest wade Jeju offers.
  • Know this: Pyoseon is ruled by the tide. At low tide it is an enormous shallow lagoon, and at high tide the sand all but disappears, and the water fills and drains fast, so check the tide table before you go.

Sand
Wide white sand
Pyoseon has a huge expanse of fine pale sand, one of the largest tidal flats on the island at well over a hundred thousand square metres. At low tide it opens into a vast field of firm sand stretching hundreds of metres out, and at high tide most of it lies under shallow water, so what you find depends entirely on when you arrive.
Water
Shallow lagoon
At low tide the bay becomes a wide, warm lagoon of shin to knee deep water over sun warmed sand, the gentlest and warmest feeling water on Jeju and exceptionally easy for small children. At high tide the water deepens and covers the sand. The water fills and drains fast, so mind the turning tide. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.
Entry
Free public beach
Pyoseon is a free public beach with open access and no admission to the sand. In summer there are seasonal rentals for parasols, mats and tubes and watersports such as paddleboarding along the shore, at rates set on the day and to be confirmed.
Facilities
Showers and resort nearby
There are showers, changing rooms and toilets in season, a grassy park behind the sand and a spread of cafes, shops and a large resort around the bay, so the area is well served. Seongeup Folk Village lies a short drive inland for an easy cultural pairing with a beach day.
Lifeguard
Summer season
Lifeguards are posted during the official beach season through July and August, when the swim zone is marked. The main hazard here is the turning tide rather than depth, since the water comes in fast over the flats. Treat conditions as typical with no swimming safety promise and keep an eye on children near the tide line.
Best months
Mid April to August
Mid April through early July brings mild to warm days good for the flats, and July and August are the formal swim months with lifeguards. Whatever the month, the tide matters more than the date, so plan around a low or falling tide for the lagoon. The shallow water warms quickly on a sunny low tide.
The honest read

Pyoseon is the most different beach on Jeju, and the one that most rewards a little planning. It sits on the southeast coast in the Pyoseon district, and rather than a fixed strip of sand it is an enormous tidal flat that changes completely with the hours. At low tide the sea pulls back to reveal a vast field of firm pale sand stretching hundreds of metres out, with a warm shallow lagoon spread across it. At high tide that same bay fills, the sand all but disappears, and the beach you read about seems to have vanished.

As the guide who lives by the tide table, I will tell you plainly that Pyoseon is a low tide beach and you must time it. Catch it right, on a falling or low tide on a sunny day, and it is the gentlest and warmest water on the island, shin deep over sun warmed sand for as far as a small child can run, genuinely the easiest paddle Jeju offers. The grassy park behind the sand and the watersports along the shore round out an unhurried family day, and Seongeup Folk Village a short drive inland makes a natural pairing when the tide is high.

The honest caveat is the same as the appeal, the tide. Arrive at high water without checking and you will find little beach and wonder what the fuss is about, and because the water fills and drains fast across the flats, you need to keep an eye on the turning tide with children on the sand. Check a Pyoseon tide table before you set out and aim for the hours around low tide. Get that one thing right and few beaches on the island are easier or more memorable for a family.

Clubs near this beach

Pyoseon is a free public tidal beach backed by a park, cafes and a large resort rather than an independent club scene. We describe the setting factually and route enquiries through our directory, and we never invent venues, prices or amenities.

The Pyoseon resort and stays

A large resort sits on the bay and guesthouses, pensions and stays spread around the Pyoseon area, giving a good base of places to stay near the sand. Their facilities, day use and any charges are set by each property and to be confirmed. We list and route the options through the directory rather than inventing them.

Getting there and essentials

Pyoseon is on the southeast coast in the Pyoseon district, reached by driving from Jeju City in around an hour, either over the centre of the island or along the east coast road past the Gujwa beaches. Parking sits behind the bay and the grassy park, and is generally manageable outside the deep summer peak. For travellers without a car, the blue intercity bus that circles the east and south coast stops at Pyoseon, a short walk from the sand.

Plan the whole visit around the tide, because here it decides everything. Check a Pyoseon tide table before you leave and aim to be on the sand for the hours around low or falling tide, when the warm shallow lagoon is at its best. Bring sun cover, water shoes and a hat for the open flats, and a little cash for the rental stalls. Keep an eye on the fast turning tide with children, respect the lifeguard flags in season, and treat conditions as typical and never guaranteed. If you arrive at high water, fill the time at Seongeup Folk Village inland.

Common questions

How do you get to Pyoseon Beach?

Pyoseon is on the southeast coast in the Pyoseon district, around an hour by car from Jeju City, either over the centre of the island or along the east coast road. The blue intercity bus that circles the east and south coast stops at Pyoseon, a short walk from the sand. Parking behind the bay is generally manageable outside the deep summer peak.

Why does Pyoseon Beach depend on the tide?

Pyoseon is a vast tidal flat rather than a fixed strip of sand. At low tide the sea pulls back to reveal hundreds of metres of firm sand with a warm shallow lagoon over it, and at high tide most of the sand lies under water. The water also fills and drains fast, so checking a tide table and timing your visit is essential.

Is Pyoseon Beach good for families and small children?

At low tide it is arguably the best family beach on the island, with warm shin deep water over sun warmed sand stretching far out, the gentlest paddle Jeju offers. The main thing to watch is the fast turning tide rather than depth, so keep an eye on children near the tide line. Lifeguards are posted in July and August. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.

What else is there to do near Pyoseon Beach?

Seongeup Folk Village, one of the island's best preserved traditional villages, is a short drive inland and pairs perfectly with a high tide hour when the beach is covered. There are cafes, a grassy park and watersports such as paddleboarding around the bay. It makes for an easy, varied day on the southeast coast.

When is the best time to visit Pyoseon Beach?

Mid April through early July brings mild to warm days, and July and August are the formal swim months with lifeguards posted. Whatever the month, the tide matters more than the date, so plan around a low or falling tide for the warm lagoon. The shallow water heats quickly on a sunny low tide. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.
