The verdict

  • Best for: Families and travellers based near Jeju City or the airport who want the closest good beach, a calm shallow swim, a short scenic walk and cafes within steps of the sand, all in an easy half day.
  • Best spot: An early shallow swim in the turquoise water, then the fifteen minute climb up Seoubong for the view back over the bay, with coffee at one of the cafes along the shore.
  • Know this: Hamdeok is genuinely lovely and genuinely convenient, which is also its catch, since the proximity to the city means a busy beach and a full car park in the summer peak.

Sand
White sand
Hamdeok has soft white sand set against the dark basalt that frames so much of the Jeju coast, giving the bay its bright, jade green look in good light. It is a compact, well kept beach rather than a vast open strip, which is part of why it feels friendly and easy for a family day.
Water
Shallow turquoise
The water is clear and turquoise and stays shallow a long way from shore, which makes it one of the gentlest swims on the island and a reassuring choice for children. The bay is usually calm, though Jeju is a windy island and the sea is only warm enough to swim in the summer months. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.
Entry
Free public beach
Hamdeok is a free public beach with open access, like Korean beaches generally. In the summer season there are paid rentals for parasols, mats and tubes from the local stalls, with rates set on the day and to be confirmed, and there is no club gate or admission charge to use the sand.
Facilities
Cafes and showers
This is a well equipped beach, with showers, changing rooms and toilets, a campground behind the sand and a cluster of cafes, restaurants and convenience stores around the bay, several with views over the water. For an easy day close to the city with everything to hand, Hamdeok is among the most comfortable beaches on Jeju.
Lifeguard
Summer season
Lifeguards are posted during the official beach season through July and August, when the swimming zone is marked and watched. Outside those months there is no cover and the water is cool to cold. Mind the basalt rock at the edges and the wind, and treat conditions as typical and never guaranteed, with no swimming safety promise.
Best months
July to August
July and August are the swim months, with late July often the sweet spot once the monsoon breaks. May and October are lovely for the Seoubong walk and the cafes without swimming, and the cold half of the year leaves a scenic but unswimmable bay. The peak weeks are busy this close to the city, so come early.
The honest read

Hamdeok is the beach that makes a Jeju trip easy. It sits on the northeast coast at Jocheon, the closest genuinely lovely beach to Jeju City and the airport, which makes it the natural choice for a first afternoon, a last morning, or any day when you do not want to drive the length of the island. The bay is a bright sweep of turquoise water over white sand, shallow and calm a long way out, framed by black rock and the little hump of Seoubong at its eastern end. It looks like the Jeju of the postcards and it is half an hour from the city, which is a rare combination.

As the guide who cares how you actually spend the day, I rate Hamdeok for how complete and low effort it is. The water is the gentlest kind of swim, genuinely reassuring with children, and when they tire of it the short trail up Seoubong gives a fifteen minute walk to a wide view back over the bay, the photograph everyone comes away with. Around the sand there is a proper run of cafes, several with sea views, plus showers, changing rooms and a campground, so you can arrive light, swim, climb, eat and drive home without a production. Few beaches give you this much within such an easy reach of the airport.

The honest caveat is the flip side of that convenience. Because Hamdeok is so close to the city and so photogenic, it gets busy, and in the July and August peak the beach fills and the car park strains by the middle of the morning. None of that spoils the place, but it does mean you should treat it as a popular beach and plan accordingly, arriving early for the sand and the parking. If you want the same turquoise water with more room, the quieter bays at Gimnyeong and Woljeongri a little further along the northeast coast are worth the extra few minutes in the car.

The club layer

Clubs near this beach

Hamdeok is a free public beach backed by a run of cafes and seasonal rental stalls rather than a private club scene. We describe the setting factually and route enquiries through our directory, and we never invent venues, prices or amenities.

1

The Hamdeok cafe and rental strip

Around the bay runs a popular cluster of cafes and restaurants, several with sea views over the turquoise water, alongside seasonal stalls renting parasols, mats and tubes in summer. There is no club admission to the beach itself, and the rental rates are set on the day and to be confirmed. It is an easy base for a relaxed day by the sand.

The Hamdeok campground and stays

Behind the sand a campground and a spread of northeast coast guesthouses and pensions give the area its base of places to stay near the beach. Their facilities, day use and any charges are set by each property and to be confirmed. We list and route the options through the directory rather than inventing them.

Getting there and essentials

Hamdeok is on the northeast coast at Jocheon, and its great advantage is how close it sits to Jeju City and the airport. By car it is around thirty minutes east on the ring road, route 1132, and a taxi takes under twenty minutes, which makes it the obvious beach for a short stay or a spare afternoon. For those without a car the buses are easy here too, with services such as the 101 express and the 201 running from the city in roughly forty to fifty minutes to the Hamdeok Beach stop, so this is one Jeju beach you can reach comfortably without driving.

Plan around the season and the crowd rather than the journey, since the journey is the easy part. In July and August arrive early for a patch of sand and a parking space, bring sun cover and water shoes for the rock at the edges, and pack a layer outside high summer when the coast turns breezy. Pair the swim with the short Seoubong walk and a coffee at one of the sea view cafes, carry a little cash for the rental stalls, respect the lifeguard flags in season, and treat all conditions as typical and never guaranteed.
