Hamdeok is the beach that makes a Jeju trip easy. It sits on the northeast coast at Jocheon, the closest genuinely lovely beach to Jeju City and the airport, which makes it the natural choice for a first afternoon, a last morning, or any day when you do not want to drive the length of the island. The bay is a bright sweep of turquoise water over white sand, shallow and calm a long way out, framed by black rock and the little hump of Seoubong at its eastern end. It looks like the Jeju of the postcards and it is half an hour from the city, which is a rare combination.
As the guide who cares how you actually spend the day, I rate Hamdeok for how complete and low effort it is. The water is the gentlest kind of swim, genuinely reassuring with children, and when they tire of it the short trail up Seoubong gives a fifteen minute walk to a wide view back over the bay, the photograph everyone comes away with. Around the sand there is a proper run of cafes, several with sea views, plus showers, changing rooms and a campground, so you can arrive light, swim, climb, eat and drive home without a production. Few beaches give you this much within such an easy reach of the airport.
The honest caveat is the flip side of that convenience. Because Hamdeok is so close to the city and so photogenic, it gets busy, and in the July and August peak the beach fills and the car park strains by the middle of the morning. None of that spoils the place, but it does mean you should treat it as a popular beach and plan accordingly, arriving early for the sand and the parking. If you want the same turquoise water with more room, the quieter bays at Gimnyeong and Woljeongri a little further along the northeast coast are worth the extra few minutes in the car.
Hamdeok is a free public beach backed by a run of cafes and seasonal rental stalls rather than a private club scene. We describe the setting factually and route enquiries through our directory, and we never invent venues, prices or amenities.
Around the bay runs a popular cluster of cafes and restaurants, several with sea views over the turquoise water, alongside seasonal stalls renting parasols, mats and tubes in summer. There is no club admission to the beach itself, and the rental rates are set on the day and to be confirmed. It is an easy base for a relaxed day by the sand.
Behind the sand a campground and a spread of northeast coast guesthouses and pensions give the area its base of places to stay near the beach. Their facilities, day use and any charges are set by each property and to be confirmed. We list and route the options through the directory rather than inventing them.
Hamdeok is on the northeast coast at Jocheon, and its great advantage is how close it sits to Jeju City and the airport. By car it is around thirty minutes east on the ring road, route 1132, and a taxi takes under twenty minutes, which makes it the obvious beach for a short stay or a spare afternoon. For those without a car the buses are easy here too, with services such as the 101 express and the 201 running from the city in roughly forty to fifty minutes to the Hamdeok Beach stop, so this is one Jeju beach you can reach comfortably without driving.
Plan around the season and the crowd rather than the journey, since the journey is the easy part. In July and August arrive early for a patch of sand and a parking space, bring sun cover and water shoes for the rock at the edges, and pack a layer outside high summer when the coast turns breezy. Pair the swim with the short Seoubong walk and a coffee at one of the sea view cafes, carry a little cash for the rental stalls, respect the lifeguard flags in season, and treat all conditions as typical and never guaranteed.
Tell us your date and party and we will point you to the right beach day and base around Hamdeok and the Jeju northeast coast, the turquoise shallows and sea view cafes the area is known for. No charge to enquire.
Hamdeok is in Jocheon on the northeast coast, the closest good beach to Jeju City. By car it is around thirty minutes east on the ring road, route 1132, and a taxi takes under twenty minutes. Yes, it is one of the best family swims on the island. The water is clear, turquoise and shallow, staying gentle a long way out, which makes it comfortable for children and weaker swimmers in season. Lifeguards are posted through July and August, and the rest of the year the water is cool to cold. Jeju is windy, so conditions can change, and they are typical and never guaranteed.
Seoubong is the small hill at the eastern edge of the beach, sometimes written as Seoubong oreum. A short trail of about fifteen to twenty minutes climbs it for a wide view back over the turquoise bay and the coast, which is the photograph most people take here. It is an easy add on to a beach day and well worth the gentle walk.
Yes, Hamdeok is well served. There are showers, changing rooms and toilets, a campground behind the sand, and a cluster of cafes, restaurants and convenience stores around the bay, several with fine views over the water. It is a comfortable, well equipped beach where you do not need to bring everything with you, which adds to its easy appeal.
July and August are the swimming months, with lifeguards posted and the water at its warmest, and late July is often the sweet spot once the monsoon breaks. For a quieter visit with fine weather to walk Seoubong and enjoy the cafes, May and October are lovely, though the sea is cool. The summer peak is busy near the city, so arrive early. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.
