Sehwa is the northeast coast at its most local. It sits at Sehwa in Gujwa, about ten minutes east of the better known Woljeong, a small emerald cove of white sand and black rock that most island itineraries skip straight past. That is exactly its appeal. While the headline beaches fill in summer, Sehwa stays quiet, and the colour of the water here is every bit as good, a clear jade green held in the shelter of the little bay.
As the guide who likes a place with a reason to linger, I rate Sehwa for everything around the sand as much as the sand itself. The big Sehwa folk five day market opens right beside the beach, one of the largest on the eastern half of the island and over a hundred years old, so a visit timed to a market day pairs a swim or a paddle with stalls of seafood, herbs and crops a few steps from the water. This is haenyeo country too, the home of the free diving grandmothers, with the Jeju Haenyeo Museum along the coast and village kitchens serving cold mulhoe, and a string of sea view cafes to fill the gaps. It adds up to a richer half day than a bigger, emptier beach.
The honest caveat is scale. Sehwa is small and the sand is thinner than at Woljeong or Hamdeok, so if your plan is a long day stretched out on a broad beach with full facilities and a guarded swim, this is not quite it. Come instead for the cove, the colour, the market and the culture, and keep the longer swim day for Woljeongri or Gimnyeong, both only a short drive along the same northeast coast.
Sehwa is a free public cove backed by sea view cafes, a famous market and the haenyeo villages rather than a private club scene. We describe the setting factually and route enquiries through our directory, and we never invent venues, prices or amenities.
Along the cove runs a cluster of sea view cafes and small restaurants, several looking straight over the emerald water, beside the large Sehwa folk five day market and the handmade Bellongjang market in the area. There is no club admission to the beach, and opening days and any charges are set locally and to be confirmed. It is a relaxed base for a slow northeast afternoon.
In the village behind the sand, haenyeo kitchens and small seafood restaurants serve local dishes such as cold mulhoe, the raw fish soup of the diving culture here. Their menus, hours and any charges are set by each place and to be confirmed. We list and route the options through the directory rather than inventing a club that is not there.
Sehwa is on the northeast coast at Gujwa, and it is an easy beach to reach as part of a coast day. By car it is around fifty minutes from Jeju City on the ring road, route 1132, and only about ten minutes east of Woljeong, so it slots naturally between the northeast beaches. Without a car the coastal buses run from the city to the Sehwa stop in a little over an hour, dropping you right beside the cove and the market, which makes this one of the easier northeast spots to visit without driving.
Plan the visit around the market and the light more than the swim. Check the five day market dates and aim for a clear morning, bring a little cash for the stalls and the cafes, and pack water shoes for the rock at the edges of the cove. Carry a layer outside high summer when the northeast turns breezy, pair the beach with the Haenyeo Museum and a mulhoe lunch, respect any lifeguard flags at the main beaches in season, and treat all conditions as typical and never guaranteed.
Tell us your date and party and we will point you to the right beach day and base around Sehwa and the Jeju northeast coast, the emerald cove, the five day market and the sea view cafes the area is known for. No charge to enquire.
Sehwa is in Sehwa in Gujwa on the northeast coast, about ten minutes east of Woljeong by car and roughly fifty minutes from Jeju City on the ring road, route 1132. Buses run along the northeast coast from the city to the Sehwa stop in a little over an hour, dropping you beside the beach and the market. It is an easy add to a northeast coast day.
It is a small, pretty cove rather than a big swimming beach, with emerald water over white sand set against black basalt and a shore that is more compact than Woljeong or Hamdeok. There is a swim in summer, but the appeal is the calm and the setting rather than a long stretch of sand. For a fuller swim day nearby, Woljeong and Gimnyeong are the better choice.
The Sehwa folk five day market is one of the largest on the eastern half of Jeju and opens beside the beach on days ending in five and zero, so the fifth, tenth, fifteenth and so on through the month. It sells vegetables, fruit, seafood, herbs, clothes and crops, and the local handmade Bellongjang market runs in the area too. Timing a visit to a market day adds a lot to Sehwa.
Yes, this is haenyeo country, the home of Jeju free diving grandmothers, and the Jeju Haenyeo Museum sits a short way along the coast. Around Sehwa are sea view cafes and small restaurants where you can try local dishes such as mulhoe, a cold raw fish soup. The mix of emerald water, market days and diving culture is what gives Sehwa its character.
July and August are the swim months on the northeast coast, with the water at its warmest and lifeguards posted at the main beaches in season. For Sehwa specifically, a clear day timed to a five day market is the sweet spot, and May, June and October are lovely for the emerald water, the cafes and the coast walk without swimming. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.
