The verdict

Best for. Travellers chasing the most famous view in the Ionian, content to see the wreck and the white cliffs from a boat or the clifftop rather than walk on the sand.

Best spot. The reinforced clifftop platform above Anafonitria for the classic photograph, or an early boat from Porto Vromi that anchors below the cliffs before the convoys.

Know this. Landing on the sand and swimming in the cove are prohibited for now on safety grounds after rockfalls, so treat Navagio as a view rather than a beach day. The status is to be confirmed.

The honest read

Navagio is the image that sells the island, a freighter run aground on a sliver of white shingle at the foot of cliffs that drop straight into water the colour of a swimming pool. The wreck has rusted in place since 1980, the cliffs glow white in the sun, and the cove has only ever been reachable by sea. Seen from the right angle it genuinely lives up to the postcard, which is rare. As a piece of pure scenery, it is the finest the Ionian has to offer.

The honest read, and the part most guides bury, is that you cannot currently set foot on it. After rockfalls from the unstable cliffs, the authorities have suspended landings on the sand and swimming in the cove on safety grounds, and the famous clifftop viewpoint has been reworked and reinforced. So the experience today is a view, not a beach day. Boats now pause and anchor a short way offshore so you can photograph the wreck and swim in the open water nearby rather than on the beach itself, and the clifftop platform gives the classic shot for free.

Set your expectations to match and Navagio is still well worth the effort. The quiet luxury here is timing. Take one of the first boats of the morning from Porto Vromi before the convoys arrive, or save the clifftop for the softer light of late afternoon when the coaches have gone. Skip the midday peak, when dozens of boats crowd the cove and the platform is shoulder to shoulder. Treat it as the great set piece of a Zakynthos trip, then spend your actual beach day on the gentle sand of the south.

Getting there and essentials

Northwest cliffs, by boat or road

The clifftop viewpoint sits above the cove near the village of Anafonitria in the northwest, around an hour by car from Zakynthos town on winding roads, with a car park and a short walk to the reinforced platform. It is free and open, and gives the classic view down onto the wreck.

To see the cove from the water, boats leave from Porto Vromi, the closest harbour, as well as Agios Nikolaos, Cape Skinari and Zakynthos town. Many now anchor a short way offshore so you can photograph the wreck and swim in the open water, since landing on the sand is not permitted for now.

Common questions about Navagio

Can you still visit Navagio shipwreck beach?

You can see it but not land on it for now. Walking on the sand and swimming in the cove are prohibited on safety grounds while the unstable cliffs are stabilised, so the wreck is viewed from a boat anchored offshore or from the reinforced clifftop platform. The status can change and is to be confirmed before you travel.

How do you get to Navagio beach?

The clifftop viewpoint is reached by car near Anafonitria in the northwest, about an hour from Zakynthos town, with a car park and a short walk. To see the cove from the water, boats run from Porto Vromi, Agios Nikolaos, Cape Skinari and Zakynthos town, with many anchoring offshore rather than landing.

Why is Navagio beach closed?

Rockfalls from the steep, unstable cliffs above the cove led the authorities to suspend landings on the sand and swimming in the bay on safety grounds. The clifftop viewpoint has also been reworked and reinforced. Access arrangements have changed over recent seasons, so check the current status before planning your visit.

Is it worth visiting Navagio if you cannot land?

Yes, for most travellers it still is, as the view of the wreck below the white cliffs is the finest scenery in the Ionian. Set expectations for a photo stop and a swim in the open water near the cove rather than a day on the sand, and go early or late to avoid the midday crowds of boats.

When is the best time to see Navagio?

June and September give calmer seas, softer light and fewer boats than the August peak. Whatever the month, the first boats of the morning and the late afternoon at the clifftop are the quietest and most rewarding times, while the middle of the day brings the heaviest boat traffic into the cove.
