Zakynthos is better known for golden turtle beaches than for snorkelling, but the rocky west coast hides some of the clearest water in the Ionian. Where the cliffs drop straight into the sea the visibility is long, the fish gather around the walls, and a mask turns an ordinary swim into the best part of the day.

If you want one easy pick, drive to Porto Limnionas and swim out from the flat rocks into the inlet. The water is cold, deep and glass clear, the fish come close to the walls, and a short snorkel here beats an hour on most of the island's sand.

Porto Limnionas
A narrow rocky inlet on the west coast with cold, deep, glass clear water and almost no sand. You slip in from the flat rocks and fish gather along the walls. The single best shore snorkel on the island, with a taverna above for after.
Xigia
A small cove fed by natural sulphur springs, where the cool, clear water and rocky sides hold plenty of fish. The mineral water is good for the skin and the visibility is long on a calm day. Park above and pick your way down to the rocks.
Agios Nikolaos
A sheltered bay on the green Vassilikos peninsula with clear water, rocky edges and a watersports base. The reefs at the sides reward a slow snorkel and boats leave from here for the blue caves. Easy to reach and good for a first try.
Marathonisi
The turtle island in the protected Laganas marine park, reached on a short boat trip from Keri or Laganas. The shallows are clear and you may share the water with a loggerhead turtle. Keep your distance, never touch, and let the turtle pass.
Porto Vromi
A pair of tiny rocky coves on the west coast, the launch point for boats to the shipwreck. The water is deep and clear with rock on both sides, so a quick snorkel here is a fine reason to arrive before the boats. Bring your own gear.
Gerakas
A protected turtle nesting beach with soft sand and shallow, clear water below the clay cliffs. It is sandy rather than rocky so there is less to see underwater, but the daytime swim is lovely and a turtle may glide past. Open by day only, and never disturb the nests.

The clearest water is on the rocky west coast at Porto Limnionas, Xigia and Porto Vromi, where the cliffs drop deep and the visibility is long. These are not sandy beaches, so wear reef shoes and slip in from the rocks rather than wading. On a calm morning they are as good as snorkelling gets in the Ionian.
The Laganas marine park is the place for turtles, but it is busy with motorboats in high season and the sandy water is cloudier than the west coast. If you snorkel here, go early, keep well clear of any turtle, never touch or chase it, and let it surface in peace. This is a protected zone and the rules exist for a reason.
Rental gear is scarce on the wild coves, so bring your own mask and fins. The best window is a calm morning from late spring to early autumn, before the afternoon wind and the boat traffic build. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed, so check the forecast and snorkel where the water is sheltered and clear.
