The verdict

Best for. Active travellers who want a small organised beach with clear water, water sports and the island's best launch point for the Blue Caves and Navagio by boat.

Best spot. The sunbed platforms by the harbour for clear, easy swimming, taken early before the cave boats and the day crowd fill the small bay.

Know this. Agios Nikolaos is a working port as much as a beach, so it is busy with boat departures, and the swimming is from pebble and platform rather than a long sandy shore.

The honest read

Agios Nikolaos is where the wild north of the island meets the water in the easiest way. Tucked at the top of the Volimes coast, it is a small, neat bay of swimming platforms and clear, quick deepening water, set around a working harbour. For a traveller who wants a clean, easy swim and the island's finest boat connections in one place, this little port punches far above its size.

The reason to come is what leaves from the quay. This is the closest and most reliable launch for the Blue Caves at Cape Skinari and for the run round to Navagio, the famous shipwreck cove, and the morning trips catch the caves when the light turns the water an unreal electric blue. Back on shore, sunbeds and water sports line the platforms, the cafe opens early for the first boats, and the whole bay has a brisk, useful energy.

The honest caveat is that this is a port first and a beach second. It is busy with departures, the swimming is from pebble and platform rather than soft sand, and it is not the place for a long lazy family day on a wide shore. Come for clear water, water sports and the best boats to the caves and the shipwreck and Agios Nikolaos rewards you. Come for a sandy family beach and you want Tsilivi or the south bay instead.

The club layer

A port, not a club

Agios Nikolaos runs on a cafe, tavernas and boat operators around the harbour rather than a beach club. For a dressed up club day, use the Zakynthos beach clubs guide.

Getting there and essentials

The top of the Volimes coast

Agios Nikolaos sits at the northern tip of the island near Volimes, around forty five minutes by car from Zakynthos town along scenic coastal roads. A lane runs down to the harbour, with parking that fills early in peak season, so an early start pays.

A car is the easiest way to reach the north, as bus links are limited, though boat trips also connect the port with other parts of the coast. Confirm you are heading for the northern Volimes Agios Nikolaos rather than the Vassilikos one, and pack reef shoes for the platforms.
