Laganas Beach
Best for. Families and easygoing groups who want a vast, shallow, warm sweep of sand, plenty of services, and the choice of a calm end or a lively one within the same bay.
Best spot. The quieter western end toward Kalamaki, where the sand stays soft and the crowds thin, claimed in the calm of the morning before the day fills.
Know this. Laganas sits inside the National Marine Park, so the bay is a protected turtle zone with speed limits offshore, no night access on the nesting sand and care asked of the dunes.
Laganas is the island at its most generous. The bay runs for kilometres in a single shallow curve, the sand is soft and the water shelves so slowly that children can wade far out in warm, settled calm. For a family that wants room to spread out, easy services within reach and the luxury of simply walking until the noise falls away, no other beach on Zakynthos offers this much space.
The trick is knowing the beach is really two places. The central strip behind the resort is loud, busy and built for volume, with rows of sunbeds, water sports and a young crowd that carries on into the night. Walk west toward Kalamaki, though, and the same bay turns quiet and soft, with thinning crowds and an unhurried feel. The discerning move is to use the strip only for what it does well, a quick drink or a banana boat for the children, and to set up well away from it.
The honest caveat is that Laganas trades on volume rather than polish, and in peak August the centre works hard and feels it. There is little natural shade, the front can look tired where it is busiest, and this is a protected turtle bay, so boats keep to speed limits, the nesting sand closes at night and you are asked to tread lightly. Come for a long, calm, easy family day on real sand and Laganas rewards you. Come for a refined or secluded scene and you want Gerakas or the west coast instead.
Bars line the strip
Laganas runs on beach bars and sunbed concessions along the front rather than a single dressed up club. Names and minimums change by season, so for a curated club day use the Zakynthos beach clubs guide.
Beach bars along the front
The Laganas front is a continuous line of sunbed concessions, cafes and beach bars rather than a named members club, busiest at the central strip and calmer toward the western end. Operators, prices and opening times are set locally and are to be confirmed when you visit.
The south coast resort bay
Laganas sits on the south coast, around ten minutes by car or taxi from Zakynthos town and close to the airport, which makes it one of the easiest beaches to reach on the island. The main road runs down to the front, with parking along the side streets and behind the central strip.
Buses link Laganas with Zakynthos town through the season, so a car is convenient but not essential for a beach day. Walk west from the centre for the softer, quieter sand, keep to the marked zones, and take care of the dunes behind, which are part of the protected nesting ground.

Common questions about Laganas
Is Laganas beach good for families?
Yes, it is one of the easiest family beaches on the island. The sand is soft, the bay is very shallow and the water stays calm a long way out, which suits young children. Services are plentiful, but lifeguard cover is seasonal and not guaranteed, so always supervise your group and judge the sea yourself.
Is Laganas beach quiet or busy?
It is both, depending where you sit. The central strip behind the resort is busy and lively, while the western end toward Kalamaki stays soft and much quieter. Walk away from the centre and arrive before mid morning in peak season for the calmest spot.
Can you see turtles at Laganas?
Laganas Bay is a key loggerhead nesting area, so turtles are present offshore and you may glimpse one on a careful boat trip from the bay. Sightings are a privilege rather than a guarantee, and you should never disturb a turtle, a nest or the protected sand.
Are there water sports at Laganas?
Yes, the central strip offers the usual towed rides, pedal boats and similar through the season, with operators and prices set locally and to be confirmed. The bay is a protected zone, so activity keeps to the marked areas and the offshore speed limits.
How do you get to Laganas beach?
Laganas is around ten minutes by car or taxi from Zakynthos town and close to the airport, with parking along the side streets behind the front. Buses also link the resort with the town through the season, so a car is convenient but not essential.
