The single most useful thing to know about a Zakynthos sunset is which way to point. The island has two faces, and they could not be more different at the end of the day. The east and south coasts, where the package resorts of Laganas, Kalamaki and Tsilivi line up, face broadly east and south, so they are sunrise shores and the evening sun goes down behind the hills at your back. The west coast, all cliffs and hidden coves, faces straight into the open Ionian, and that is where you go for the sun in the sea.
Once you are on the right side the rewards come quickly, and they come with a taverna. Porto Limnionas is the pick, a deep blue rocky inlet like a small fjord with a family run taverna perched on the rocks above the water, so you watch the disc drop out to sea with a plate of grilled fish and a carafe of the local Verdea in front of you. Porto Vromi sits further north among quiet coves, the little harbour the boats leave from for the famous shipwreck, and the cliff top viewpoint above Navagio catches the last colour over the Ionian if you time it.
We have ranked the spots below for the light and the setting, and as always for where to eat and what the place is really like, because a west coast Zakynthos sunset is a slow taverna evening more than a quick photo. Up in the hills above the capital, Bohali gives you a table over the bay and the Venetian town, and the island kitchens run to ladotyri cheese, a slow beef sartsa and that amber Verdea wine. Conditions are typical rather than guaranteed, and anything we cannot verify is marked to be confirmed.
Six of the best spots for sunset in Zakynthos
The west coast coves and the cliff viewpoints, and the taverna that comes with them.
Porto Limnionas
The most complete sundown on the island, a narrow rocky inlet of deep clear blue on the open west coast with a taverna built into the rocks above the water. Swim off the ledges in the warm afternoon, then settle in upstairs for grilled fish as the sun drops straight out to sea. On the list as the Zakynthos sunset at its best, no sand but the finest seat in the house and a kitchen to match.
Porto Vromi
A scatter of tiny coves and a little working harbour on the west coast, the closest launch point for the boats out to the shipwreck, quiet once the day trips have gone and lovely as the light slants across the cliffs. On the list for a calm, low key west coast sundown away from the resorts, with a simple taverna or two for fish and a carafe before the drive back over the hills.
Navagio viewpoint
The famous shipwreck cove, and the most honest entry on the list. You cannot watch the sunset from the beach itself, access is by boat and has been restricted after landslides, so the evening show is from the cliff top platforms high above as the sky burns over the Ionian. On the list for the most dramatic dusk view on the island, a lookout rather than a beach, so bring a picnic and stay for the colour.
Gerakas
A graceful curve of soft golden sand on the Vasilikos peninsula, a protected loggerhead turtle nesting beach where the back of the sand is roped off and the area closes at night in season. It faces south so the light is a gentle afterglow rather than a sea horizon. On the list for the prettiest soft sand sundown, honest about the turtle rules, with the tavernas of Vasilikos just behind for dinner.
Marathonisi
The little turtle island in Laganas Bay, shaped like a tortoise and reached by boat, where an afternoon trip can drift back as the bay fills with soft evening colour and the hills of the mainland coast turn. Not a sea horizon, but a serene water level glow. On the list for the gentlest boat trip sundown, paired with a harbour dinner at Keri or Limni Keriou on the way back.
Dafni
A remote, undeveloped turtle beach reached by a rough road or by boat, with a famous family taverna on the sand and a wild, end of the road feel that holds the late light beautifully. Protected, so respect the nesting rules and the night closure in season. On the list for the most off grid taverna sundown on the island, a long slow dinner of fresh fish where the day simply runs out.
Be honest, the resort coast faces the wrong way, so go west
The honest read is simple geography. If you are staying in the big resorts of Laganas, Kalamaki or Tsilivi and expecting to watch the sun drop into the sea from the beach, you will be disappointed, because those coasts face east and south and the evening sun sets behind the island at your back. They are genuinely lovely at sunrise, and worth an early morning, but for the sundown you need to get in the car and cross to the west coast, where the cliffs and coves face straight into the open Ionian.
The other honest note is about Navagio, the shipwreck beach that sells the island on a thousand postcards. You cannot have a sunset on that sand. The cove is reached only by boat, the last trips leave well before dusk, and access has been restricted after rockfalls and landslides on the unstable cliffs. The sunset version of Navagio is the cliff top viewpoint high above, which is spectacular in its own right, but treat it as a lookout with a picnic rather than a beach evening, and keep well back from the crumbling edge.
Timing is the shoulder months of May, June and September for warm clear evenings, calmer crowds and the west coast tavernas open without the August crush. Midsummer is hot and busy and the boat coves fill early. The west coast can catch an afternoon breeze and the light fades fast once it goes behind the cliffs, so conditions are typical rather than guaranteed and worth checking on the day.
Beach clubs and tavernas for the golden hour
Zakynthos keeps its evening scene more taverna and seafront than glossy day club, and on the west coast that is exactly the appeal, a rock perched kitchen like Porto Limnionas doing fresh fish as the sun drops rather than a daybed and a DJ. The livelier bar and club scene sits over on the east at Laganas, which is a different kind of night entirely. Operators, opening status and any minimum spend shift through the season, so we keep the live list on the directory. Tell us your dates and the kind of evening you want and we pass the enquiry on to confirm what is open.

Before you go
Which side of Zakynthos is best for sunset?
The west coast. Its cliffs and coves, like Porto Limnionas and Porto Vromi, face straight into the open Ionian, so the sun drops into the sea there. The east and south resort coasts around Laganas, Kalamaki and Tsilivi face the sunrise instead, so the evening sun sets behind the island at your back.
Which Zakynthos beach has the best sunset?
Porto Limnionas, a deep rocky inlet on the west coast with a taverna built into the rocks above the water, is the most complete, the sun dropping out to sea with grilled fish in front of you. Porto Vromi nearby and the cliff top viewpoint above Navagio also catch the last colour over the Ionian.
Can you watch the sunset at Navagio Shipwreck Beach?
Not from the sand. Navagio is reached only by boat, the last trips leave well before dusk, and access has been restricted after landslides on the cliffs. The sunset version is the cliff top viewpoint high above, spectacular but a lookout rather than a beach evening, so keep well back from the unstable edge. To be confirmed locally as access changes.
Where is the best sunset dinner in Zakynthos?
The taverna at Porto Limnionas on the rocks for fish as the sun drops, the harbour tavernas of Limni Keriou and Keri in the southwest, and the hill of Bohali above Zakynthos town for a table over the bay and the Venetian quarter. Pair it with ladotyri cheese, a slow sartsa and a carafe of amber Verdea.
When is the best time for sunsets in Zakynthos?
May, June and September for warm clear evenings, calmer crowds and the west coast tavernas open without the midsummer crush. The light fades fast once the sun drops behind the west coast cliffs and an afternoon breeze can pick up, so conditions are typical rather than guaranteed and worth checking on the day.
