The verdict

Best for. Discerning travellers and families who want soft golden sand, calm shallow water and a low key, protected setting, and who are happy to follow the marine park rules.

Best spot. The eastern end below the sculpted clay cliffs, where the sand is soft and the water shelves gently, claimed in the morning calm before the day boats arrive.

Know this. Gerakas sits in the National Marine Park and is a key turtle nesting beach, so it closes at night, keeps sunbeds to the front zone and asks for quiet care of the sand.

The honest read

Gerakas is the beach the island keeps for those who know. At the very tip of the Vassilikos peninsula, a long soft curve of golden sand runs below cliffs of pale clay that the weather has sculpted into fins and folds. The water shelves slowly and stays calm, warm and clear, and the whole bay has a hushed, cared for quality that the busier resort sands lack. For a refined day on real sand, with a paddle that suits children and a setting that suits adults, this is the finest choice on the island.

The reason it feels different is that it is protected. Gerakas lies inside the National Marine Park of Zakynthos and is one of the most important loggerhead nesting beaches in the Mediterranean, so it is run with restraint. The beach closes at night through the nesting season, sunbeds and services are kept to a front strip so the soft sand behind stays clear for the turtles, and visitors are asked to take their litter and tread lightly. Far from spoiling it, these rules are exactly what keep Gerakas calm and lovely while other beaches fill and fray.

The honest caveat is small. There is less to do here than at Banana up the coast, the shade is limited, and in peak August the front fills with sunbeds and the car park works hard, so an early arrival pays. You may also see turtles offshore, which is a privilege rather than a guarantee. Come for soft sand, calm water and a protected, grown up beach day, follow the simple rules, and Gerakas rewards you. Come looking for water sports and a party and you want Banana or the Tsilivi strip instead.

Getting there and essentials

The tip of the Vassilikos peninsula

Gerakas sits at the southern end of the Vassilikos peninsula, around twenty five minutes by car from Zakynthos town. A lane runs down past tavernas to a car park behind the beach, and because the bay is in the marine park there is no access at night during the nesting season, so plan a daytime visit.

A car is the easiest way to arrive with beach gear, as bus links to the tip of the peninsula are limited. Follow the marked paths to the front of the beach, keep to the sunbed zone, and take care of the soft sand and the dunes behind, which are the nesting ground.

Common questions about Gerakas

Is Gerakas beach good for families?

Yes, it is one of the best family beaches on the island. The sand is soft, the entry is gentle and the water stays shallow and calm, which suits young children. Services are kept light to protect the nesting beach, and lifeguard cover is seasonal and not guaranteed, so always supervise your group and follow the marine park notices.

Why does Gerakas beach close at night?

Gerakas is inside the National Marine Park of Zakynthos and is a key loggerhead turtle nesting beach, so it closes at night through the nesting season to protect the turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs. The night closure, the front only sunbed zone and the care of the dunes are all part of keeping the beach protected.

Can you see turtles at Gerakas?

You sometimes can, as loggerheads nest on this stretch and are occasionally seen in the water offshore, but sightings are a privilege rather than a guarantee. Never disturb a turtle or a nest, keep to the marked zones, and consider a dedicated boat trip in Laganas Bay if seeing turtles is the main aim of your day.

How do you get to Gerakas beach?

Gerakas is at the tip of the Vassilikos peninsula, around twenty five minutes by car from Zakynthos town, with a lane down to a car park behind the sand. A car is the easiest way to arrive, as bus links to the peninsula are limited, and there is no access at night during the nesting season.

Are there sunbeds at Gerakas?

Yes, there are sunbeds and a small canteen, but they are kept to a front strip so the soft sand behind stays clear for nesting turtles. Set up near the front, bring an umbrella if you want reliable shade, and remember that prices and opening times are set locally and are to be confirmed when you visit.
