Da Nang has one of the simplest beach setups in Vietnam: a long, soft, pale sand coastline running south from the city, broken into named stretches that each have their own character. For a family that is good news, because the water is gentle on calm dry season days, the main beaches are well served with showers and lifeguards, and almost everything is a short taxi ride from the centre.
This guide ranks the beaches the way a parent actually chooses one, by how easy the day is, how gentle the water tends to be, and what is on hand when you arrive. We lead with the honest verdict on each, name the busy ones, and point you to the calmer sand when you want a quieter day. Conditions are described as typical for the season and are never guaranteed, so always read the swim flags and the sea before going in.
A quick orientation. The headline city beaches, My Khe, My An, Bac My An and Pham Van Dong, all sit along Vo Nguyen Giap on the eastern side of the river, a few minutes apart. Non Nuoc lies a little further south at the foot of the Marble Mountains, on the road toward Hoi An. The dry season from February to August brings the calmest water and the most reliable weather, while the wet season from September raises the surf and the typhoon risk.
Ranked for an easy family day
Five beaches, judged on calm water, soft sand and what is actually there when you arrive.
My Khe
The famous main beach is the easy yes for families: soft wide sand, gentle entry water on calm days, freshwater showers, chair rental and a daytime lifeguard team. It is busiest on summer afternoons, so come early for the calmest water and the most space.
Pham Van Dong
The city's most modern public beach, just three kilometres from downtown, with dressing rooms, showers, parking and an active lifeguard team. The water is among the gentler city swimming spots, and the lively early mornings are a lovely slice of local life.
Bac My An
A calmer, palm backed stretch near the resort district, with soft sand and a peaceful mood. Much of the comfort sits with the resorts, so the open sand has limited facilities and you should come prepared, but the quiet is the point.
My An
The quieter southern section of the same beach as My Khe, backed by the An Thuong cafe and bar strip. You get the same soft sand and gentle water with smaller crowds, and lunch and downtime are a two minute walk off the sand.
Non Nuoc
Soft sand and often shallow, calm water at the foot of the Marble Mountains, which makes an easy shaded midday activity. It is less developed with limited public facilities and turns into a surf beach from late autumn, so come prepared.
How to choose, honestly
If you want the least friction with children, start at Pham Van Dong or My Khe. Both have real facilities, lifeguards and gentle water on calm days, and both are minutes from the city. My Khe has the wider choice of food and loungers, while Pham Van Dong is the most equipped public beach and the closest to downtown. On a busy summer afternoon either can get crowded, so the trick everywhere in Da Nang is to swim early.
When you want quiet, move down the coast. Bac My An trades facilities for calm and space, and Non Nuoc adds the Marble Mountains for a shaded break, though both ask you to bring your own water and shade. My An sits in between, quieter than My Khe but with the An Thuong food strip right behind it, which makes it a comfortable base for several days rather than a single visit.
The one thing that applies everywhere is the season. The whole coast is calm and gentle in the dry months from February to August and progressively livelier once the wet season arrives in September, with bigger surf and a real typhoon risk through October and November. None of these beaches should be treated as a guaranteed safe swim, so read the flags, keep children in the shallows, and judge the sea on the day.
Where to book a daybed
Da Nang's beach club scene is concentrated along My Khe and My An, where a handful of clubs and beach bars offer daybeds, loungers and food on or beside the sand. Names, opening dates and any minimum spend shift by season, so we list what is currently around in the Da Nang club directory and mark anything unconfirmed as to be confirmed.
Down at Bac My An and Non Nuoc the comfort sits more with the resorts that front parts of the beach, which offer loungers and pools to guests. For a bookable family day, tell us the beach and the party and we will match you to a setup and pass the request to the team.
