The best free and budget beaches in Da Nang

Da Nang has one of the great underrated city beaches in Asia, a long ribbon of golden sand running for miles down the coast, and almost all of it is free public space. There are smart resorts behind parts of the strip, but the sand in front of them is open to everyone, and the city keeps showers, lifeguarded zones and cheap cafes along the promenade. A wonderful beach day here costs very little.

If you want one easy pick, walk down to My Khe in the heart of the city, rent nothing, swim in the warm water and grab a fresh coconut from a cart. The beach is free, the lifeguards patrol the marked zones in season, and a bowl of noodles afterwards costs less than a coffee back home.

The honest news for Da Nang is that there is very little to skip, because the whole coast is essentially free public sand. The only catch is the resort stretch toward Non Nuoc and the Marble Mountains, where hotels dominate the backshore and the easy beach access points are fewer. The sand itself is still public, but you may walk further to reach it, so the central city beaches are simpler and just as free.

The trade on the wilder ends is facilities and water quality. Nam O and the far northern beaches have little shade and no lifeguards, and after heavy rain the river mouths can carry debris, so they are best on a clear dry day. The central beaches at My Khe and Pham Van Dong have showers and patrolled zones, which makes them the safer free choice for a swim.

Keep the day cheap by renting nothing, eating from the carts and local quan rather than the beachfront resorts, and hiring a cheap scooter or grabbing a ride to reach the quieter stretches. A coconut, a banh mi and a bowl of mi quang cost almost nothing. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed, and the surf and rip currents build in the wet season, so swim in the marked zones.
