Snorkelling Beaches
in Da Nang

Past the sandy surf, to the rocky coves and the reef boat.

The verdict

  • Best forSnorkellers who know Da Nang is a swimming and surf city at heart, and who will head for rock or take the reef boat to find clear water and life.
  • Top pickThe rocky coves of the Son Tra Peninsula for the best snorkelling within the city, with the Cham Islands boat trip off Hoi An the real reward when the season allows.
  • One thing to knowThe famous city beaches such as My Khe are open sandy surf, lovely for a swim but poor for snorkelling, so the good water sits over rock or a boat ride away.

Da Nang is, at heart, a swimming and surf city, and its long ribbon of sand along My Khe and My An is rightly loved for an easy morning dip and a sunrise. What it is not is a snorkelling beach. The floor is sand, the sea runs open to the East Sea with a seasonal swell, and the visibility off the city beaches stays modest at best. The travellers who come expecting a reef from the shore go home puzzled. The ones who know where to look turn instead to the rock of the Son Tra Peninsula and, for the real thing, to the boat out to the Cham Islands.

We have ranked these for what you actually see underwater, weighing how much rock and life a spot holds, how clear and sheltered it stays through the season, and whether you can reach it from the sand or need a boat. The order is honest about a city that snorkels best at its edges and offshore rather than along its famous sand. Conditions here are strongly seasonal and never guaranteed, with the dry months calmest and clearest, so check locally and let the boat schedule and the day decide where you swim.

The ranking

Snorkelling beaches in Da Nang

Scored on rock and life over sand, how clear and sheltered the water stays through the season, and how it is reached.

1
Son Tra Peninsula

Son Tra

The forested peninsula north of the city, ringed with small rocky coves that hold the clearest water and the most to look at within Da Nang. Some pockets of coral and reef fish reward a calm dry season morning, and the quieter coves are reached by boat or basket boat. This is where the city snorkels best, and the wild green backdrop is a bonus.

2
Son Tra Peninsula

Tien Sa

A sheltered bay at the base of Son Tra, calmer than the open city beaches and edged with rock that holds clearer water on a settled day. More a gentle, accessible snorkel than a showpiece reef, but a sound choice close to town when the swell is up elsewhere. Best early and in the dry season, before the afternoon breeze stirs the surface.

3
Lien Chieu, north Da Nang

Nam O

A fishing village beach on the northern edge of the city with a rocky reef just offshore, long known locally for its seaweed beds rather than tourism. The water over the rock can be clear in calm months and the scene is refreshingly real, though there are few facilities. A spot for the curious snorkeller who likes a working shore over a resort one.

4
Son Tra base

Man Thai

A local fishing beach at the foot of the Son Tra Peninsula, with rocky edges where the water clears on a quiet day and a glimpse of everyday coastal life away from the resort strip. Modest for snorkelling and short on services, but an honest, easy add to a Son Tra morning rather than a destination in itself.

5
My An, resort strip

Bac My An

The polished resort beach along the My An strip, calm and comfortable with the easiest facilities in the city, but a sandy floor that offers little beneath the surface. Included for honesty: it is a fine place to swim, lounge, and base yourself, and the spot to leave from for a Son Tra cove or a Cham Islands boat rather than to snorkel.

6
Da Nang city

My Khe

The famous one, a long open sweep of sand facing the East Sea, superb for a swim, a surf, and a sunrise, and genuinely one of the great city beaches. For snorkelling, though, it is the wrong tool entirely, with a sandy floor and a seasonal swell. Come for the morning dip and the walk, and chase the clear water over rock elsewhere.

Who it suits, who should skip

If you want clear water and something to see, head for the rock of the Son Tra Peninsula on a calm dry season morning, or give a full day to the boat out to the Cham Islands off Hoi An, where the marine park holds the genuine reef this coast is short of closer in. That boat day, in our experience, is the snorkelling worth planning the trip around, and it is the honest answer when someone asks where the reef is near Da Nang.

Who should skip what? Do not pin a snorkelling day on My Khe or the My An resort strip; they are excellent swimming and surf beaches with little beneath the surface. And do not assume the water is clear year round, since the wet season from around September to December brings rough seas and the island boats often pause. As ever, the sea here is wild and seasonal, so check conditions and the boat schedule, never count on a guaranteed clear day, and treat the rougher months as time for the sand rather than the mask.

Where to book a base

All Da Nang beach clubs

A snorkelling day sits well alongside a booked base on the My An strip, somewhere to swim, take a long lunch, and rest between a Son Tra cove in the morning and an evening on the sand. The resort beaches and beach clubs along My An and Bac My An are the easiest places to reserve a daybed and arrange a Cham Islands boat close by. Specific operators and any minimum spend are best confirmed at the time of booking. Tell us the beach and your dates and we will pass the enquiry on so they can confirm space.

Good questions

Before you go

Where is the best snorkelling near Da Nang?

The rocky coves around the Son Tra Peninsula hold the best snorkelling within Da Nang itself, with clearer water over rock than the city's long sandy beaches. For genuine reef, the boat trip to the Cham Islands off Hoi An, a marine protected area, is the real answer and a day worth giving. The famous city beaches such as My Khe are for swimming and surf, not snorkelling.

Can you snorkel at My Khe Beach in Da Nang?

Not really. My Khe is a long, open, sandy surf beach facing the East Sea, lovely for a swim and a sunrise but with a sandy floor and seasonal swell that leave little to see beneath the surface. For clear water over rock you want the Son Tra coves, and for reef you want the Cham Islands boat. Treat My Khe as a swimming and walking beach instead.

Is the water clear enough to snorkel in Da Nang?

It depends heavily on the spot and the season. Over the rock of the Son Tra Peninsula in the calm dry months the visibility can be good, while the open sandy beaches stay cloudier and rougher. The clearest, calmest water generally falls in the dry season from around March to August. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed, so check locally before you commit to a cove.

When is the best time to snorkel in Da Nang?

The dry season from about March to August brings the calmest, clearest sea, with mornings usually the most settled before the afternoon breeze. The wetter months from around September to December bring rougher water and reduced visibility, and the Cham Islands boat trips often pause in that season. Always check the day's conditions and the boat schedule rather than trusting a single window.

Do you need a boat to snorkel near Da Nang?

For the best snorkelling, yes. The reef and the clearest water are at the Cham Islands off Hoi An, reached by speedboat on an organised day trip, and around parts of the Son Tra Peninsula best reached by boat or basket boat. You can snorkel from some Son Tra coves without one, but the showpiece reef is a boat day rather than a swim from a city beach.
