Fourni Beach
Best for. Adventurous travellers who want a remote cliff backed cove with clear water and rock formations, far from the resorts and happy to drive for it.
Best spot. The sheltered patch at the foot of the cliffs near the rock formations, where the water is clearest for a swim and a snorkel between the boulders.
Know this. This is a remote west coast cove with rock, cliffs and a windier, choppier sea than the east. Bring everything you need, wear water shoes, and check the wind before you commit to the drive.
Fourni is the west coast of Rhodes at its wildest and least packaged. Tucked beneath tall cliffs near the castle village of Monolithos, it is a small cove of coarse sand, pebble and great fallen boulders, with clear water lapping rock formations and the odd sea cave to explore. There are no sunbed rows and no music here, only the cliffs, the sea and a sense that you have left the resorts far behind.
On a calm day the swimming is a real reward. The water is clear and deep, lovely for a float beneath the cliffs and a snorkel among the boulders, and the dramatic setting makes every dip feel like an adventure. The rock formations and small caves invite a careful explore, and the lack of crowds means you often share the cove with only a handful of other people who made the same effort to get there.
The honest read is about the west coast itself. This shore faces the open sea, so it is more exposed than the sheltered east coast and can turn windy and choppy with current when the weather shifts. Combined with the rocky entry and the near total lack of facilities, that makes Fourni a place to come prepared, on a settled day, with water shoes, supplies and a healthy respect for the sea.
Who should skip it. If you want soft sand, calm shallow water and a full row of facilities for small children, Fourni is the wrong cove and the organised east coast beaches suit far better. But if you want a remote, dramatic swim beneath the cliffs, paired with a visit to the Monolithos castle above, it is one of the most atmospheric corners of Rhodes.
A wild cove, not a club
Fourni is a remote natural cove with minimal facilities and no beach club. For daybeds, service and music, the organised beaches on the east coast are the place to look. Use the Rhodes beach clubs guide and keep Fourni for the dramatic swim and the castle above.
A remote public cove
Fourni is an undeveloped cove beneath the cliffs with little to no facilities and no branded club. Come self sufficient, and treat any seasonal services as to be confirmed locally.
West coast, near Monolithos
Fourni lies on the west coast of Rhodes below the cliffs near Monolithos, around an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half by car from Rhodes town and the airport. A small road winds down toward the cove, with parking near the access point above the sand.
Public transport to this corner is sparse, so a car is effectively essential and gives you the freedom to pair the cove with Monolithos castle on the same trip. The drive through the western interior is scenic in its own right.
Because there are almost no facilities at the cove, arrive with water, food, sun cover and water shoes. Monolithos village a short drive away has tavernas and supplies for before or after your swim.

Common questions about Fourni
Is Fourni beach worth the drive?
If you want a remote, dramatic cove beneath the cliffs with clear water and rock formations, yes. Pair it with Monolithos castle above to make the long drive across the west coast more than worth it on a settled day.

No, it is a cove of coarse sand, pebble and boulders rather than soft sand, which adds to its wild character. Water shoes make the entry and the rocky ground far more comfortable.

Very few to none on the sand, so come self sufficient with water, food and sun cover. The village of Monolithos a short drive away has tavernas and supplies.
