Gennadi Beach
Best for. Travellers who want space, quiet and a long beach walk away from the crowds, happy to trade soft sand and full facilities for room to breathe.
Best spot. The central stretch near the village access, where a handful of beach bars and sunbeds break up the long open shore without crowding it.
Know this. This is pebble and shingle, not soft sand, and the open coast can be breezy with deeper entry. Bring water shoes and treat it as a swim and walk beach, not a toddler paddling pool.
Gennadi is what much of the Rhodes coast looked like before the resorts arrived, and it has held onto that openness. The beach runs for kilometres along the southeast shore, mostly grey pebble and coarse sand, backed by low scrub and the odd beach bar rather than a wall of hotels. If your idea of a good beach day is space, a long walk and the sound of the sea instead of a sound system, this is your stretch.
The swimming suits confident swimmers. Off the shingle the water deepens fairly quickly and stays clear, lovely on a calm day, while the open aspect means it can pick up a breeze and a little chop when the wind blows from the south. That same exposure keeps it cooler and fresher than the sheltered east coast coves, which on a hot still afternoon is no bad thing at all.
The honest read is about facilities and feet. Gennadi is largely undeveloped, so outside the central section near the village there is little shade, no sunbeds and no snack stop, and you should arrive self sufficient with water and sun cover. The shingle is also hard on bare feet, so water shoes turn a wince into a pleasure. None of this is a flaw, it is simply the trade for all that room.
Who should skip it. If you want soft sand, calm shallow water for toddlers and a full row of facilities, the organised beaches further north suit far better. But if you have grown tired of fighting for a sunbed and want a long, quiet, honest beach where you can walk for ten minutes and meet almost no one, Gennadi is one of the most restful stretches on Rhodes.
Beach bars, not a club scene
Gennadi is a long, quiet public beach with a few beach bars and sunbeds at its centre rather than a dressed up club. For daybeds, service and music, the organised beaches up the coast deliver more. Use the Rhodes beach clubs guide and keep Gennadi for the space and the long walk.
Beach bars on the central stretch
A handful of relaxed beach bars and sunbed hire serve the central section near the village. There is no large branded club here, and any operator details are to be confirmed locally.
Southeast coast, near Gennadi village
Gennadi lies on the southeast coast of Rhodes, around an hour to seventy five minutes by car from Rhodes town and the airport, beyond Lindos and Lardos. The beach runs along the shore below and beside Gennadi village, with several access points and roadside parking.
Buses on the southern route serve Gennadi village, from where the beach is a short walk, though a car gives far more freedom to explore the long undeveloped stretches and find a quiet patch of your own.
Because much of the beach has no facilities, arrive with water, sun cover and ideally an umbrella, and stock up in the village. The central section near the access road has the bars and sunbeds if you would rather not carry everything.

Common questions about Gennadi
Is Gennadi beach sandy?
No, it is mostly grey pebble and coarse sand rather than soft sand. That keeps it quiet and natural, but water shoes make walking and entering the water far more comfortable.
Is Gennadi beach quiet?
Yes, it is one of the quieter long beaches on Rhodes, largely undeveloped away from the central section near the village. You can walk for minutes and meet almost no one, especially outside July and August.
Are there facilities at Gennadi beach?
Only at the central stretch near the village, where there are a few beach bars and sunbeds. Long sections have no shade or services, so arrive with water, sun cover and ideally an umbrella.
Is the water safe for swimming at Gennadi?
The water deepens fairly quickly off the shingle and the open coast can be breezy, so it suits confident swimmers more than toddlers. There is no guaranteed lifeguard, so take care and supervise children closely.
How do I get to Gennadi beach?
It is about an hour to seventy five minutes by car from Rhodes town, beyond Lindos and Lardos on the southeast coast. Southern route buses serve the village, but a car helps you reach the quieter stretches.
