Prasonisi Beach
Best for. Windsurfers, kitesurfers and curious day trippers who want the dramatic double bay where a calm sea and a windy sea meet across a single sandbar.
Best spot. The eastern side of the sandbar, calmer and shallower for swimming and beginners, while the western side is left to the experienced wind crowd.
Know this. In high summer the sandbar can be partly covered by the sea, and this is a windy, remote spot far from Rhodes town. Come for the wind and the spectacle, not for a sheltered family lounge.
Prasonisi is the most theatrical beach on Rhodes, and it does not look like anywhere else on the island. At the very southern tip, a low sandbar reaches out to a small rocky islet, and on either side of that bar lies a different sea. To the east the water is calmer and shallow, to the west it is open and wind whipped, and standing on the sand with both at once is genuinely strange and wonderful.
That split is why the wind sports world loves it. The reliable summer wind and the contrast of flat and choppy water make Prasonisi one of the best windsurfing and kitesurfing spots in the Mediterranean, with schools and equipment hire clustered at the busy section. Beginners take lessons on the calmer eastern side while the experienced rip across the western side, and even non surfers come just to watch the sails.
The honest read is about wind, water and remoteness. This is a windy place by design, so a still beach day is not what you get, and in the height of summer the sea can rise enough to cover part of the sandbar and shrink the walkable strip. It is also a long drive from anywhere, at the far southern tip with little around it, so you commit to the trip rather than drop in on a whim.
Who should skip it. If you want sheltered calm water, soft sand and easy facilities for small children, Prasonisi will feel exposed and bare, and the gentler east coast coves suit better. But if you windsurf or kitesurf, or simply love a dramatic landscape where two seas meet, it is one of the most memorable places to stand on the whole island.
Wind schools, not a beach club
Prasonisi is a wind sports beach with surf schools, equipment hire and seasonal canteens rather than a dressed up beach club. For daybeds and service, the organised beaches up the coast deliver more. Use the Rhodes beach clubs guide and treat Prasonisi as the surf and spectacle day.
Wind sports schools on the sandbar
Windsurf and kitesurf schools with equipment hire, sunbeds and a few seasonal canteens. There is no branded beach club here, and any operator details are to be confirmed locally.
Southern tip of Rhodes
Prasonisi sits at the very southern tip of Rhodes, roughly an hour and a half to nearly two hours by car from Rhodes town and the airport, beyond Gennadi and Kattavia. The final approach runs down a track to the sandbar, with parking near the wind sports section.
There is no easy public transport to the tip, so a car or an organised excursion is effectively essential. The drive is long but scenic, passing through the quiet southern villages on the way down.
Bring water, sun cover and anything you need, as services are seasonal and basic this far out. The canteens at the busy section cover drinks and snacks, but plan for a self sufficient day around the wind.

Common questions about Prasonisi
Why is Prasonisi famous?
Because a low sandbar at the southern tip of Rhodes joins the coast to a small islet, with a calm sea on one side and a windy sea on the other. That contrast makes it one of the best windsurfing and kitesurfing spots in the Mediterranean.
Can beginners learn to windsurf or kitesurf at Prasonisi?
Yes. Schools run lessons on the calmer, shallower eastern side, while the experienced use the exposed western side. Always go through a school for equipment and guidance, and treat conditions as typical rather than guaranteed.
Is Prasonisi good for swimming?
The eastern side is calmer and shallower and is fine for a swim in typical conditions, but the western side is exposed and wind driven and is best left to wind sports. There is no guaranteed lifeguard, so take care.
Is the Prasonisi sandbar always there?
Not entirely. In the height of summer the sea can rise enough to cover part of the sandbar, so the walkable strip shrinks. Outside peak summer it is usually wider and easier to cross.
How far is Prasonisi from Rhodes town?
It is a long drive of around an hour and a half to nearly two hours to the southern tip, beyond Gennadi and Kattavia. There is no easy public transport, so plan it as a full day by car or excursion.
